DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 OR Samuele disse a Saulle: Il Signore mi ha mandato per ungerti per re sopra il suo popolo, sopra Israele; ora dunque ascolta la voce delle parole del Signore.	1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.
2 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io mi son rammemorato ciò che Amalec fece ad Israele, come egli se gli oppose tra via, quando egli salì fuor di Egitto.	2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.
3 Ora va’, e percuoti Amalec, e distruggete al modo dell’interdetto tutto ciò che è suo; e non risparmiarlo; anzi fa’ morire uomini e donne, fanciulli e bambini di poppa, buoi e pecore, cammelli ed asini.	3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '
4 Saulle adunque raunò il popolo, e ne fece la rassegna in Telaim, in numero di dugentomila uomini a piè, e di diecimila di Giuda.	4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).
5 E Saulle venne fino alla città di Amalec, e pose agguati nella valle.	5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.
6 E Saulle disse a’ Chenei: Andate, partitevi, scendete del mezzo degli Amalechiti; che talora io non vi distrugga con loro; avendo pur voi usata benignità inverso tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, quando salirono fuor di Egitto. I Chenei adunque si partirono di mezzo gli Amalechiti.	6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 E Saulle percosse gli Amalechiti da Havila fino a Sur, che è a fronte all’Egitto.	7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.
8 E prese vivo Agag, re degli Amalechiti; ma distrusse tutto il popolo al modo dell’interdetto, mettendolo a fil di spada.	8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.
9 E Saulle, e il popolo, risparmiarono Agag, e il meglio delle pecore, e i buoi appaiati, e i montoni, e tutto ciò ch’era buono; e non vollero distruggere queste cose; ben distrussero ogni cosa vile e cattiva	9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.
10 Allora la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Samuele, dicendo:	10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,
11 Io mi pento d’aver costituito re Saulle; perciocchè egli si è rivolto indietro da me, e non ha messe ad esecuzione le mie parole. E Samuele ne fu molto cruccioso, e gridò al Signore tutta quella notte.	11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.
12 Poi Samuele si levò la mattina, per andare incontro a Saulle. Ed egli fu rapportato e detto a Samuele: Saulle è venuto in Carmel; ed ecco, egli si ha rizzato un trofeo; poi se n’è ritornato, ed è passato oltre, ed è disceso in Ghilgal.	12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'
13 Samuele adunque venne a Saulle. E Saulle disse a Samuele: Sii tu benedetto appo il Signore; io ho messa ad esecuzione la parola del Signore.	13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'
14 E Samuele disse: Che belar di pecore dunque è questo che mi viene agli orecchi? e che mugghiar di buoi è questo che io odo?	14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'
15 E Saulle disse: Queste bestie sono state menate dal paese degli Amalechiti; perciocchè il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e de’ buoi, per farne sacrificio al Signore Iddio tuo; ma abbiamo distrutto il rimanente al modo dell’interdetto.	15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'
16 E Samuele disse a Saulle: Permetti che io ti dichiari ciò che il Signore mi ha detto questa notte. Ed egli gli disse: Parla pure.	16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'
17 E Samuele disse: Non è egli così, che, quando tu ti sei reputato piccolo, tu sei stato costituito capo delle tribù d’Israele, e il Signore ti ha unto per re sopra Israele?	17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.
18 Ora il Signore ti avea mandato a questa impresa, e ti avea detto: Va’, distruggi que’ peccatori, gli Amalechiti, e fa’ loro guerra finchè sieno consumati.	18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."
19 Perchè dunque non hai tu ubbidito alla voce del Signore? anzi ti sei rivolto alla preda, ed hai fatto ciò che dispiace al Signore?	19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'
20 E Saulle disse a Samuele: Io ho pure ubbidito alla voce del Signore, e sono andato all’impresa, alla quale il Signore mi ha mandato, e ne ho menato Agag, re di Amalec, ed ho distrutti gli Amalechiti al modo dell’interdetto.	20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;
21 Ma il popolo ha preso, d’infra la preda, buoi e pecore, il meglio dell’interdetto, per farne sacrificio al Signore Iddio tuo, in Ghilgal.	21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'
22 E Samuele disse: Il Signore ha egli a grado gli olocausti e i sacrificii, come che si ubbidisca alla sua voce? Ecco, ubbidire val meglio che sacrificio; e prestare attenzione val meglio che grasso di montoni.	22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.
23 Perciocchè la ribellione è pari al peccato dell’indovinare; e il trasgredire è pari al peccato che si commette intorno agl’idoli ed alle immagini. Perciocchè tu hai sdegnata la parola del Signore, egli altresì ha sdegnato te, acciocchè tu non sii più re	23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'
24 Allora Saulle disse a Samuele: Io ho peccato; conciossiachè io abbia trasgredito il comandamento del Signore, e le tue parole; perciocchè io temeva del popolo, onde io acconsentii a ciò ch’egli disse.	24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.
25 Ma ora, perdonami, ti prego, il mio peccato, e ritorna meco; ed io adorerò il Signore.	25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'
26 E Samuele disse a Saulle: Io non ritornerò teco; perciocchè tu hai sdegnata la parola del Signore, e il Signore altresì ha sdegnato te, acciocchè tu non sii più re sopra Israele.	26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'
27 E come Samuele si fu voltato per andarsene, Saulle prese il lembo del manto di esso, il quale si stracciò.	27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,
28 E Samuele gli disse: Il Signore ha oggi stracciato d’addosso a te il regno d’Israele, e l’ha dato ad un tuo prossimo, ch’è miglior di te.	28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'
29 Ed anche egli, che è la Vittoria d’Israele, non mentirà, e non si pentirà; perciocchè egli non è un uomo, per pentirsi.	29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)
30 E Saulle disse: Io ho peccato: deh! onorami ora in presenza degli Anziani del mio popolo, ed in presenza d’Israele, e ritorna meco, ed io adorerò il Signore Iddio tuo.	30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'
31 Samuele adunque se ne ritornò dietro a Saulle; e Saulle adorò il Signore	31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.
32 Poi Samuele disse: Menatemi qua Agag, re di Amalec; ed Agag se ne andò a lui con dilicatezze. Ed Agag diceva: Certo l’amaritudine della morte è passata.	32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'
33 Ma Samuele gli disse: Siccome la tua spada ha orbate le donne di figliuoli, così sarà tua madre orbata di figliuoli fra le donne. E Samuele fece squartare Agag nel cospetto del Signore, in Ghilgal.	33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.
34 Poi Samuele se ne andò in Rama. E Saulle salì a casa sua in Ghibea di Saulle.	34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.
35 E Samuele non vide più Saulle, fino al giorno della sua morte; benchè Samuele facesse cordoglio di Saulle; ma il Signore s’era pentito d’aver costituito Saulle re sopra Israele	35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.
