DIODATI	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 CHE diremo adunque che il padre nostro Abrahamo abbia ottenuto secondo la carne?	1 So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?
2 Perciocchè, se Abrahamo è stato giustificato per le opere, egli ha di che gloriarsi; ma egli non ha nulla di che gloriarsi appo Iddio.	2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.
3 Imperocchè, che dice la scrittura? Or Abrahamo credette a Dio, e ciò gli fu imputato a giustizia.	3 For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”
4 Ora, a colui che opera, il premio non è messo in conto per grazia, ma per debito.	4 But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.
5 Ma, a colui che non opera, anzi crede in colui che giustifica l’empio, la sua fede gli è imputata a giustizia.	5 Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.
6 Come ancora Davide dice la beatitudine esser dell’uomo, a cui Iddio imputa la giustizia, senza opere, dicendo:	6 Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:
7 Beati coloro, le cui iniquità son rimesse, e i cui peccati son coperti.	7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.
8 Beato l’uomo, a cui il Signore non avrà imputato peccato	8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”
9 Ora dunque, questa beatitudine cade ella sol nella circoncisione, ovvero anche nell’incirconcisine? poichè noi diciamo che la fede fu imputata ad Abrahamo a giustizia.	9 Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.
10 In che modo dunque gli fu ella imputata? mentre egli era nella circoncisione, o mentre era nell’incirconcisione? non mentre era nella circoncisione, anzi nell’incirconcisione.	10 But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 Poi ricevette il segno della circoncisione, suggello della giustizia della fede, la quale egli avea avuta, mentre egli era nell’incirconcisione, affin d’esser padre di tutti coloro che credono, essendo nell’incirconcisione, acciocchè ancora a loro sia imputata la giustizia;	11 For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,
12 e padre della circoncisione, a rispetto di coloro che non solo son della circoncisione, ma eziandio seguono le pedate della fede del padre nostro Abrahamo, la quale egli ebbe mentre era nell’incirconcisione.	12 and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
13 Perciocchè la promessa d’essere erede del mondo non fu fatta ad Abrahamo, od alla sua progenie per la legge, ma per la giustizia della fede.	13 For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.
14 Poichè, se coloro che son della legge sono eredi, la fede è svanita, e la promessa annullata;	14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.
15 perciocchè la legge opera ira; ma dove non è legge, eziandio non vi è trasgressione.	15 For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.
16 Perciò, è per fede affin d’esser per grazia; acciocchè la promessa sia ferma a tutta la progenie; non a quella solamente ch’è della legge, ma eziandio a quella ch’è della fede d’Abrahamo; il quale secondo che è scritto:	16 Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,
17 Io ti ho costituito padre di molte nazioni, è padre di tutti noi davanti a Dio, a cui egli credette, il qual fa vivere i morti, e chiama le cose che non sono, come se fossero.	17 in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”
18 Il quale contro a speranza in isperanza credette; per divenir padre di molte nazioni, secondo che gli era stato detto: Così sarà la tua progenie.	18 And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”
19 E, non essendo punto debole nella fede, non riguardò al suo corpo già ammortito, essendo egli d’età presso di cent’anni; nè all’ammortimento della matrice di Sara.	19 And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.
20 E non istette in dubbio per incredulità intorno alla promessa di Dio; anzi fu fortificato per la fede, dando gloria a Dio.	20 And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 Ed essendo pienamente accertato che ciò ch’egli avea promesso, era anche potente da farlo.	21 knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.
22 Laonde ancora ciò gli fu imputato a giustizia	22 And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.
23 Ora, non per lui solo è scritto che gli fu imputato.	23 Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,
24 Ma ancora per noi, ai quali sarà imputato; i quali crediamo in colui che ha suscitato da’ morti Gesù, nostro Signore.	24 but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,
25 Il quale è stato dato per le nostre offese, ed è risuscitato per la nostra giustificazione	25 who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.
