DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ALLORA il Signore rispose a Giobbe da un turbo, e disse:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 Chi è costui, che oscura il consiglio Con ragionamenti senza scienza?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 Deh! cigniti i lombi come un valente uomo, Ed io ti farò delle domande, e tu insegnami	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Ove eri, quando io fondava la terra? Dichiaralo, se hai conoscimento ed intelletto.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Chi ha disposte le misure di essa, se tu il sai? Ovvero chi ha steso il regolo sopra essa?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 Sopra che sono state fondate le sue basi? Ovvero, chi pose la sua pietra angolare?	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 Quando le stelle della mattina cantavano tutte insieme, E tutti i figliuoli di Dio giubilavano?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 E chi rinchiuse il mare con porte Quando fu tratto fuori, ed uscì della matrice?	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 Quando io posi le nuvole per suo vestimento, E la caligine per sue fasce,	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 E determinai sopra esso il mio statuto, E gli posi attorno sbarre e porte,	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 E dissi: Tu verrai fin qua, e non passerai più innanzi; E qui si fermerà l’alterezza delle tue onde?	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 Hai tu, da che tu sei in vita, comandato alla mattina? Ed hai tu mostrato all’alba il suo luogo?	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 Per occupar l’estremità della terra, E far che gli empi se ne dileguino?	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 E far che la terra si muti in diverse forme, come argilla stampata; E che quelle si appresentino alla vista come un vestimento?	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 E che la luce di queste cose sia divietata agli empi, E che il braccio altiero sia rotto?	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 Sei tu entrato infino a’ gorghi del mare, E sei tu passeggiato nel fondo dell’abisso?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 Le porte della morte ti son esse scoperte, Ed hai tu vedute le porte dell’ombra della morte?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 Hai tu compresa la larghezza della terra? Dichiaralo, se tu la conosci tutta.	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 Quale è la via del luogo ove dimora la luce? E dov’è il luogo delle tenebre?	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 Perchè tu vada a prendere essa luce, e la meni al termine del suo corso, E conosca i sentieri della sua casa?	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
21 Sì, tu il sai; perciocchè allora nascesti, E il numero de’ tuoi giorni è grande.	21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
22 Sei tu entrato dentro a’ tesori della neve, Ed hai tu vedute le conserve della gragnuola,	22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
23 La quale io riserbo per lo tempo del nemico, Per lo giorno dell’incontro, e della battaglia?	23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
24 Per qual via scoppia la fiamma, E il vento orientale si spande egli in su la terra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 Chi ha fatti de’ condotti alla piena delle acque, E delle vie a’ lampi de’ tuoni?	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 Per far piovere in su la terra, ove non è niuno; E in sul deserto, nel quale non abita uomo alcuno?	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 Per satollare il luogo desolato e deserto; E per farvi germogliar l’erba pullulante?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 La pioggia ha ella un padre? Ovvero, chi ha generate le stille della rugiada?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 Del cui ventre è uscito il ghiaccio, E chi ha generata la brina del cielo?	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 Chi fa che le acque si nascondano, e divengano come una pietra; E che la superficie dell’abisso si rapprenda?	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 Puoi tu legare le delizie delle Gallinelle, Ovvero sciogliere le attrazioni dell’Orione?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 Puoi tu fare uscire i segni settentrionali al tempo loro, E condur fuori Arturo co’ suoi figli?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 Conosci tu gli ordini costituiti de’ cieli? Hai tu stabilito il lor reggimento sopra la terra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 Puoi tu, alzando la tua voce alla nuvola, Far che una piena d’acqua ti copra?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 Puoi tu mandare i folgori, Sì che vadano e ti dicano: Eccoci?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 Chi ha messa la sapienza nell’interior dell’uomo? Ovvero chi ha dato il senno alla mente di esso?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 Chi annovera le nuvole con sapienza? E chi posa i barili del cielo;	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 Dopo che la polvere è stata stemperata, come un metallo fonduto; E le zolle si son rigiunte?	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 Andrai tu a cacciar preda per il leone? E satollerai tu la brama de’ leoncelli?	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 Quando si appiattano ne’ lor ricetti, E giaccion nelle lor caverne, stando in guato.	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 Chi apparecchia al corvo il suo pasto, Quando i suoi figli gridano a Dio, E vagano per mancamento di cibo?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
