EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 La gente de Efraím dijo a Gedeón: «¿Qué nos has hecho? ¿Por qué no nos llamaste cuando fuiste a combatir contra Madián?». Y se lo reprocharon violentamente.	1 And the men of Ephraim said to him: What is this that thou meanest to do, that thou wouldst not call us when thou wentest to fight against Madian? and they chid him sharply and almost offered violence.
2 Pero él les respondió: «¿Qué hice yo comparado con lo que hicieron ustedes? Un solo racimo de Efraím vale más que toda la vendimia de Abiézer.	2 And he answered them: What could I have done like to that which you have done? Is not one bunch of grapes of Ephraim better than the vintages of Abiezer?
3 Dios puso en manos de ustedes a los jefes de Madián, Oreb y Zeeb. Comparado con esto, ¿qué he logrado hacer yo?». Después que les dijo estas palabras, se calmó su animosidad contra él.	3 The Lord hath delivered into your bands the princes of Madian, Oreb and Zeb: what could I have done like to what you have done? And when he had said this, their spirit was appeased, with which they swelled against him.
4 Gedeón llegó hasta el Jordán y lo cruzó. El y los trescientos hombres que lo acompañaban estaban cansados y hambrientos.	4 And when Gedeon was come to the Jordan, he passed over it with the three hundred men, that were with him: who were so weary that they could not pursue after them that fled.
5 Entonces dijo a la gente de Sucot: «Por favor, traigan un poco de pan para la tropa que me acompaña, porque están agotados de cansancio, y yo estoy persiguiendo a Zébaj y a Salmuná, reyes de Madián».	5 And he said to the men of Soccoth: Give, I beseech you, bread to the people that is with me, for they are faint: that we may pursue Zebee, and Salmana the kings of Madian.
6 Pero los jefes de Sucot le respondieron: «¿Acaso tienes prisioneros a Zébaj y a Salmuná para que le demos pan a tu ejército?».	6 The princes of Soccoth answered: Peradventure the palms of the hands of Zebee and Salmana are in thy hand, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to thy army.
7 «Está bien, respondió Gedeón; cuando el Señor ponga en mis manos a Zébaj y a Salmuná, desgarraré la carne de ustedes con espinas y cardos del desierto».	7 And he said to them: When the Lord therefore shall have delivered Zebee and Salmana into my hands, I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the desert.
8 De allí subió a Penuel y les hizo el mismo pedido. Pero la gente de Penuel le respondió lo mismo que la gente de Sucot.	8 And going up from thence, he came to Phanuel: and he spoke the like things to the men of that place. And they also answered him, as the men of Soccoth had answered.
9 Entonces Gedeón dijo a los de Penuel: «Cuando vuelva victorioso, derribaré esta torre».	9 He said therefore to them also: When I shall return a conqueror in peace, I will destroy this tower.
10 Zébaj y Salmuná estaban en Carcor con su ejército. Eran unos quince mil hombres, es decir, todos los sobrevivientes del campamento de los Orientales. Los que habían caído eran ciento veinte mil armados de espada.	10 But Zebee and Salmana were resting with all their army. For fifteen thousand men were left of all the troops of the eastern people, and one hundred and twenty thousand warriors that drew the sword, were slain.
11 Gedeón subió por el camino de los nómadas, al este de Nóbaj y de Iogbohá, y derrotó al ejército, cuando ya se creían seguros.	11 And Gedeon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents, on the east of Nobe and Jegbaa, and smote the camp of the enemies, who were secure, and suspected no hurt.
12 Zébaj y Salmuná, reyes de Madián, trataron de huir, pero Gedeón los persiguió, los capturó a los dos y sembró el pánico en todo el ejército.	12 And Zebee and Salmana fled, and Gedeon pursued and took them, all their host being put in confusion.
13 Después del combate, Gedeón, hijo de Joás, regresó por la pendiente de Jares.	13 And returning from the battle before the sun rising,
14 Entonces detuvo a un joven de Sucot, lo interrogó, y él le dio por escrito los nombres de los jefes y los ancianos de Sucot. Eran setenta y siete hombres.	14 He took a boy of the men of Soccoth: and he asked him the names of the princes and ancients of Soccoth, and he described unto him seventy-seven men.
15 Luego se presentó ante los hombres de Sucot y les dijo: «Aquí están Zébaj y Salmuná, los hombres por los que ustedes se burlaron de mí, diciendo: «¿Acaso ya tienes en tu poder a Zébaj y Salmuná para que les demos pan a tus tropas hambrientas?».	15 And he came to Soccoth and said to them: Behold Zebee and Salmana, concerning whom you upbraided me, saying: Peradventure the hands of Zebee and Salmana, are in thy hands, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to the men that are weary and faint.
16 Después tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, recogió espinas y cardos del desierto e hirió con ellos a los hombres de Sucot.	16 So he took the ancients of the city and thorns and briers of the desert, and tore them with the same, and cut in pieces the men of Soccoth.
17 También derribó la torre de Penuel y mató a los hombres de la ciudad.	17 And he demolished the tower of Phanuel, and slew the men of the city.
18 Gedeón dijo a Zébaj y a Salmuná: «¿Cómo eran los hombres que ustedes mataron en Tabor?». «Se parecían a ti, respondieron ellos; todos tenían aspecto de príncipes».	18 And he said to Zebee and Salmana: What manner of men were they whom you slew in Thabor? They answered: They were like thee, and one of them as the son of a king.
19 Gedeón les respondió: «Ellos eran mis hermanos, hijos de mi madres, ¡Juro por la vida del Señor, que si ustedes les hubieran perdonado la vida, ahora no los mataría!».	19 He answered them: They were my brethren, the sons of my mother. As the Lord liveth, if you had saved them, I would not kill you.
20 Entonces dijo a Iéter, su hijo mayor: «Mátalos aquí mismo». Pero el muchacho tuvo miedo de sacar la espada, porque todavía era muy joven.	20 And he said to Jether his eldest son: Arise, and slay them. But he drew not his sword: for he was afraid, being but yet a boy.
21 Zébaj y Salmuná dijeron: «Mátanos tú, porque un hombre se mide por su valor». Gedeón se levantó, mató a Zébaj y a Salmuná, y se guardó los adornos que sus camellos llevaban en el cuello.	21 And Zebee and Salmana said: Do thou rise, and run upon us: because the strength of a man is according to his age: Gedeon rose up and slew Zebee and Salmana: and he took the ornaments and bosses, with which the necks of the camels of kings are wont to be adorned.
22 Los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: «Gobiérnanos tú, y que después de ti nos gobiernen tu hijo y tu nieto, porque nos salvaste del poder de Madián».	22 And all the men of Israel said to Gedeon: Rule thou over us and thy son, and thy son's son: because thou hast delivered us from the hand of Madian.
23 Pero Gedeón les respondió: «Ni yo los gobernaré ni tampoco mi hijo; sólo el Señor los gobernará».	23 And he said to them: I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you, but the Lord shall rule over you.
24 Luego añadió: «Les voy a pedir una cosa: que cada uno me dé un anillo de lo que le ha tocado como botín». Porque los vencidos eran ismaelitas, y por eso tenían anillos de oro.	24 And he said to them: I desire one request of you: Give me the earlets of your spoils. For the Ismaelites were accustomed to wear golden earlets.
25 «Te los daremos con mucho gusto», respondieron ellos. Entonces él extendió su manto, y cada israelita depositó en él un anillo de su botín.	25 They answered: We will give them most willingly. And spreading a mantle on the ground, they cast upon it the earlets of the spoils.
26 El peso de los anillos que recogió fue de mil setecientos siclos de oro, sin contar los prendedores, los aros y los vestidos de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián, y sin contar tampoco los collares de los camellos.	26 And the weight of the earlets that he requested, was a thousand seven hundred sicles of gold, besides the ornaments, and jewels, and purple raiment which the kings of Madian were went to use, and besides the golden chains that were about the camels' necks.
27 Con todo eso, Gedeón hizo un efod, y lo instaló en su ciudad, en Ofrá. Todo Israel fue a prostituirse allí, delante del efod, que se convirtió en una trampa para Gedeón y su familia.	27 And Gedeon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city Ephra. And all Israel committed fornication with it, and it became a ruin to Gedeon and to all his house.
28 Madián quedó humillado delante de los israelitas, y no volvió a levantar cabeza. El país estuvo tranquilo durante cuarenta años, mientras vivió Gedeón.	28 But Madian was humbled before the children of Israel, neither could they any more lift up their beads: but the land rested for forty years, while Gedeon presided.
29 Ierubaal, hijo de Joás, se fue y permaneció en su casa.	29 So Jerobaal the son of Joas went, and dwelt in his own house.
30 Gedeón tuvo setenta hijos propios, porque tenía muchas mujeres.	30 And he had seventy sons, who came out of his thigh, for he had many wives.
31 La concubina que tenía en Siquem también le dio un hijo, a quien puso el nombre de Abimélec.	31 And his concubine, that he had in Sichem, bore him a son, whose name was Abimelech.
32 Gedeón, hijo de Joás, murió después de una feliz vejez, y fue enterrado en la tumba de su padre Joás, en Ofrá de Abiézer.	32 And Gedeon the son of Joas died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father in Ephra of the family of Ezri.
33 Después de la muerte de Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a prostituirse ante los Baales y tomaron como dios a Baal Berit.	33 But after Gedeon was dead, the children of Israel turned again, and committed fornication with Baalim. And they made a covenant with Baal, that he should be their god:
34 Así se olvidaron del Señor, su Dios, que los había librado de todos los enemigos de alrededor.	34 And they remembered not the Lord their God, who delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies round about:
35 Y no agradecieron a la casa de Ierubaal Gedeón todo el bien que él había a Israel.	35 Neither did they shew mercy to the house of Jerobaal Gedeon, according to all the good things he had done to Israel.
