EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Después de esto, Jesús atravesó el mar de Galilea, llamado Tiberíades.	1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-
2 Lo seguía una gran multitud, al ver los signos que hacía curando a los enfermos.	2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.
3 Jesús subió a la montaña y se sentó allí con sus discípulos.	3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.
4 Se acercaba la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos.	4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.
5 Al levantar los ojos, Jesús vio que una gran multitud acudía a él y dijo a Felipe: «¿Dónde compraremos pan para darles de comer?».	5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'
6 El decía esto para ponerlo a prueba, porque sabía bien lo que iba a hacer.	6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.
7 Felipe le respondió: «Doscientos denarios no bastarían para que cada uno pudiera comer un pedazo de pan».	7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'
8 Uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:	8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,
9 «Aquí hay un niño que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?».	9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'
10 Jesús le respondió: «Háganlos sentar». Había mucho pasto en ese lugar. Todos se sentaron y eran uno cinco mil hombres.	10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.
11 Jesús tomó los panes, dio gracias y los distribuyó a los que estaban sentados. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados, dándoles todo lo que quisieron.	11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.
12 Cuando todos quedaron satisfechos, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Recojan los pedazos que sobran, para que no se pierda nada».	12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'
13 Los recogieron y llenaron doce canastas con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes de cebada.	13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.
14 Al ver el signo que Jesús acababa de hacer, la gente decía: «Este es, verdaderamente, el Profeta que debe venir al mundo».	14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'
15 Jesús, sabiendo que querían apoderarse de él para hacerlo rey, se retiró otra vez solo a la montaña.	15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.
16 Al atardecer, sus discípulos bajaron a la orilla del mar	16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea
17 y se embarcaron, para dirigirse a Cafarnaúm, que está en la otra orilla. Ya era de noche y Jesús aún no se había reunido con ellos.	17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.
18 El mar estaba agitado, porque soplaba un fuerte viento.	18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.
19 Cuando habían remado unos cinco kilómetros, vieron a Jesús acercarse a la barca caminando sobre el agua, y tuvieron miedo.	19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,
20 El les dijo: «Soy yo, no teman».	20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'
21 Ellos quisieron subirlo a la barca, pero esta tocó tierra en seguida en el lugar adonde iban	21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.
22 Al día siguiente, la multitud que se había quedado en la otra orilla vio que Jesús no había subido con sus discípulos en la única barca que había allí, sino que ellos habían partido solos.	22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.
23 Mientras tanto, unas barcas de Tiberíades atracaron cerca del lugar donde habían comido el pan, después que el Señor pronunció la acción de gracias.	23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.
24 Cuando la multitud se dio cuenta de que Jesús y sus discípulos no estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y fueron a Cafarnaúm en busca de Jesús.	24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
25 Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla, le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste?».	25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'
26 Jesús les respondió: «Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan, no porque vieron signos, sino porque han comido pan hasta saciarse.	26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.
27 Trabajen, no por el alimento perecedero, sino por el que permanece hasta la Vida eterna, el que les dará el Hijo del hombre; porque es él a quien Dios, el Padre, marcó con su sello».	27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.
28 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras de Dios?».	28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'
29 Jesús les respondió: «La obra de Dios es que ustedes crean en aquel que él ha enviado».	29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'
30 Y volvieron a preguntarle: «¿Qué signos haces para que veamos y creamos en ti? ¿Qué obra realizas?	30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?
31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: Les dio de comer el pan bajado del cielo».	31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'
32 Jesús respondió: «Les aseguro que no es Moisés el que les dio el pan del cielo; mi Padre les da el verdadero pan del cielo;	32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;
33 porque el pan de Dios es el que desciende del cielo y da Vida al mundo».	33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
34 Ellos le dijeron: «Señor, danos siempre de ese pan».	34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'
35 Jesús les respondió: «Yo soy el pan de Vida. El que viene a mí jamás tendrá hambre; el que cree en mí jamás tendrá sed.	35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.
36 Pero ya les he dicho: ustedes me han visto y sin embargo no creen.	36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.
37 Todo lo que me da el Padre viene a mí, y al que venga a mí yo no lo rechazaré,	37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,
38 porque he bajado del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la del que me envió.	38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.
39 La voluntad del que me ha enviado es que yo no pierda nada de lo que él me dio, sino que lo resucite en el último día.	39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.
40 Esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que el que ve al Hijo y cree en él, tenga Vida eterna y que yo lo resucite en el último día».	40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.
41 Los judíos murmuraban de él, porque había dicho: «Yo soy el pan bajado del cielo».	41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'
42 Y decían: «¿Acaso este no es Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo puede decir ahora: «Yo he bajado del cielo»?	42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '
43 Jesús tomó la palabra y les dijo: «No murmuren entre ustedes.	43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.
44 Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo atrae el Padre que me envió; y yo lo resucitaré en el último día.	44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.
45 Está escrito en el libro de los Profetas: "Todos serán instruidos por Dios". Todo el que oyó al Padre y recibe su enseñanza, viene a mí.	45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.
46 Nadie ha visto nunca al Padre, sino el que viene de Dios: sólo él ha visto al Padre.	46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.
47 Les aseguro que el que cree, tiene Vida eterna.	47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.
48 Yo soy el pan de Vida.	48 I am the bread of life.
49 Sus padres, en el desierto, comieron el maná y murieron.	49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;
50 Pero este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que aquel que lo coma no muera.	50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.
51 Yo soy el pan vivo bajado del cielo. El que coma de este pan vivirá eternamente, y el pan que yo daré es mi carne para la Vida del mundo».	51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'
52 Los judíos discutían entre sí, diciendo: «¿Cómo este hombre puede darnos a comer su carne?».	52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'
53 Jesús les respondió: «Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tendrán Vida en ustedes.	53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.
54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene Vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el último día.	54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.
55 Porque mi carne es la verdadera comida y mi sangre, la verdadera bebida.	55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él.	56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.
57 Así como yo, que he sido enviado por el Padre que tiene Vida, vivo por el Padre, de la misma manera, el que me come vivirá por mí.	57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.
58 Este es el pan bajado del cielo; no como el que comieron sus padres y murieron. El que coma de este pan vivirá eternamente».	58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.
59 Jesús enseñaba todo esto en la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm.	59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.
60 Después de oírlo, muchos de sus discípulos decían: «¡Es duro este lenguaje! ¿Quién puede escucharlo?».	60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'
61 Jesús, sabiendo lo que sus discípulos murmuraban, les dijo: «¿Esto los escandaliza?	61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?
62 ¿Qué pasará entonces, cuando vean al Hijo del hombre subir donde estaba antes?	62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?
63 El Espíritu es el que da Vida, la carne de nada sirve. Las palabras que les dije son Espíritu y Vida.	63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.
64 Pero hay entre ustedes algunos que no creen». En efecto, Jesús sabía desde el primer momento quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que lo iba a entregar.	64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.
65 Y agregó: «Por eso les he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre no se lo concede».	65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'
66 Desde ese momento, muchos de sus discípulos se alejaron de él y dejaron de acompañarlo.	66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.
67 Jesús preguntó entonces a los Doce: «¿También ustedes quieren irse?».	67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'
68 Simón Pedro le respondió: «Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de Vida eterna.	68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,
69 Nosotros hemos creído y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios».	69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'
70 Jesús continuó: «¿No soy yo, acaso, el que los eligió a ustedes, los Doce? Sin embargo, uno de ustedes es un demonio».	70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'
71 Jesús hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, que era uno de los Doce, el que lo iba a entregar.	71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.
