EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dos años después, el Faraón tuvo un sueño: él estaba de pie junto al Nilo,	1 Two years later it happened that Pharaoh had a dream: there he was, standing by the Nile,
2 cuando de pronto subieron del río siete vacas hermosas y robustas, que se pusieron a pastar entre los juncos.	2 and there, coming up from the Nile, were seven cows, sleek and fat, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
3 Detrás de ella subieron otras siete vacas feas y escuálidas, que se pararon al lado de las primeras;	3 And then seven other cows, wretched and lean, came up from the Nile, behind them; and these wentover and stood beside the other cows on the bank of the Nile.
4 y las vacas feas y escuálidas se comieron a las siete vacas hermosas y robustas. En seguida el Faraón se despertó.	4 The wretched and lean cows ate the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.
5 Luego volvió a dormirse y tuvo otro sueño: siete espigas grandes y lozanas salían de un mismo tallo.	5 He fel asleep and dreamed a second time: there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, fulland ripe.
6 Pero inmediatamente después brotaron otras siete espigas, delgadas y quemadas por el viento del este;	6 And then sprouting up, behind them, came seven ears of grain, meagre and scorched by the eastwind.
7 y las espigas delgadas devoraron a las siete espigas grandes y cargadas de granos. Cuando se despertó, el Faraón se dio cuenta de que había estado soñando.	7 The scanty ears of grain swal owed the seven ful and ripe ears of grain. Then Pharaoh woke up; ithad been a dream.
8 A la mañana siguiente, el Faraón se sintió muy preocupado y mandó llamar a todos los magos y sabios de Egipto, para contarles sus sueños. Pero nadie se los pudo interpretar.	8 In the morning Pharaoh, feeling disturbed, had all the magicians and wise men of Egypt summoned tohim. Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret it for Pharaoh.
9 Entonces el copero mayor se dirigió al Faraón y le dijo: «Ahora reconozco mi negligencia.	9 Then the chief cup-bearer addressed Pharaoh, 'Today, I recal having been at fault.
10 En cierta oportunidad, el Faraón se irritó contra sus servidores, y me puso bajo custodia, junto con el panadero mayor, en la casa del capitán de guardias.	10 When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, he put myself and the chief baker in custody in thehouse of the commander of the guard.
11 El y yo tuvimos un sueño en el transcurso de una misma noche, cada sueño con su propio significado.	11 We had a dream on the same night, he and I, and each man's dream had a meaning for himself.
12 Con nosotros estaba un joven hebreo, un servidor del capitán de guardias; nosotros le contamos nuestros sueños, y él los interpretó, dando a cada uno su explicación.	12 There was a young Hebrew with us, one of the slaves belonging to the commander of the guard. Wetold our dreams to him and he interpreted them for us, tel ing each of us what his dream meant.
13 Y todo sucedió como él lo había interpretado: yo fui restituido a mi cargo, mientras que el otro fue ahorcado».	13 It turned out exactly according to his interpretation: I was restored to my position, but the other manwas hanged.'
14 El Faraón mandó llamar a José, que sin pérdida de tiempo fue sacado de la prisión. Este se afeitó, se cambió de ropa y compareció ante el Faraón.	14 Then Pharaoh had Joseph summoned, and they hurried him from the dungeon. He shaved andchanged his clothes, and presented himself before Pharaoh.
15 El Faraón dijo a José: «He tenido un sueño que nadie puede interpretar. Pero me han informado que te basta oír un sueño para interpretarlo».	15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard itsaid of you that you can interpret a dream the instant you hear it.'
16 José respondió al Faraón: «No soy yo, sino Dios, el que dará al Faraón la respuesta conveniente».	16 'Not I,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, 'God wil give Pharaoh a favourable answer.'
17 Entonces el Faraón dijo a José: «Soñé que estaba parado a orilla del Nilo,	17 So Pharaoh told Joseph, 'In my dream there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile.
18 y de pronto subían del río siete vacas robustas y hermosas, que se pusieron a pastar entre los juncos.	18 And there were seven cows, fat and sleek, coming up out of the Nile, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
19 Detrás de ellas subieron otras siete vacas, escuálidas, de aspecto horrible y esqueléticas, como nunca había visto en todo el territorio de Egipto.	19 And then seven other cows came up, behind them, starved, very wretched and lean; I have neverseen such poor cows in all Egypt.
20 Y las vacas escuálidas y feas devoraron a las otras siete vacas robustas.	20 The lean and wretched cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
21 Pero una vez que las comieron, nadie hubiera dicho que las tenían en su vientre, porque seguían tan horribles como antes. En seguida me desperté.	21 But when they had eaten them up, it was impossible to tel they had eaten them, for they looked aswretched as ever. Then I woke up.
22 En el otro sueño, vi siete espigas hermosas y cargadas de granos, que brotaban de un mismo tallo.	22 And then again in my dream, there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, beautiful y ripe;
23 Después de ellas brotaron otras siete espigas, marchitas, delgadas y quemadas por el viento del este,	23 but then sprouting up behind them came seven ears of grain, withered, meagre and scorched by theeast wind.
24 que devoraron a las siete espigas hermosas. Yo he contado todo esto a los adivinos, pero ninguno me ha dado una explicación».	24 Then the shrivel ed ears of grain swal owed the seven ripe ears of grain. I have told the magicians,but no one has given me the answer.'
25 José dijo al Faraón: «El Faraón ha soñado una sola cosa, y así Dios le ha anunciado lo que está a punto de realizar.	25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'Pharaoh's dreams are one and the same: God has revealed to Pharaohwhat he is going to do.
26 Las siete vacas hermosas y las siete espigas lozanas representan siete años. Los dos sueños se tratan de lo mismo.	26 The seven fine cows are seven years and the seven ripe ears of grain are seven years; it is one andthe same dream.
27 Y las siete vacas escuálidas y feas que subieron después de ellas son siete años, lo mismo que las siete espigas sin grano y quemadas por el viento del este. Estos serán siete años de hambre.	27 The seven gaunt and lean cows coming up behind them are seven years, as are the seven shrivel edears of grain scorched by the east wind: there wil be seven years of famine.
28 Es como lo acabo de decir al Faraón: Dios ha querido mostrarle lo que está a punto de realizar.	28 It is as I have told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is going to do.
29 En los próximos siete años habrá en todo Egipto una gran abundancia.	29 Seven years are coming, bringing great plenty to the whole of Egypt,
30 Pero inmediatamente después, sobrevendrán siete años de hambre, durante los cuales en Egipto no quedará ni el recuerdo de aquella abundancia, porque el hambre asolará al país.	30 but seven years of famine will fol ow them, when al the plenty in Egypt wil be forgotten, and faminewil exhaust the land.
31 Entonces nadie sabrá lo que es la abundancia, a causa del hambre, que será muy intensa.	31 The famine that is to fol ow wil be so very severe that no one wil remember what plenty the countryused to enjoy.
32 El hecho de que el Faraón haya tenido dos veces el mismo sueño, significa que este asunto ya está resuelto de parte de Dios y que él lo va a ejecutar de inmediato.	32 The reason why Pharaoh had the same dream twice is that the event is already determined by God,and God wil shortly bring it about.
33 Por eso, es necesario que el Faraón busque un hombre prudente y sabio, y lo ponga al frente de todo Egipto.	33 'Pharaoh should now find someone intel igent and wise to govern Egypt.
34 Además, el Faraón deberá establecer inspectores en todo el país y exigir a los egipcios la quinta parte de las cosechas durante los siete años de abundancia.	34 Pharaoh should take action and appoint supervisors for the country, and impose a tax of one-fifth onEgypt during the seven years of plenty.
35 Ellos reunirán los víveres que se cosechen en estos próximos siete años de prosperidad, y almacenarán el grano bajo la supervisión del Faraón, para tenerlo guardado en las ciudades.	35 They wil col ect al the food produced during these good years that are coming, and store the grainunder Pharaoh's authority, putting it in the towns and keeping it.
36 Así el país tendrá una reserva de alimentos para los siete años de hambre que vendrán sobre Egipto, y no morirá de inanición.	36 This food wil form a reserve for the country against the seven years of famine which are coming onEgypt, so that the country wil not be destroyed by the famine.'
37 La respuesta agradó al Faraón y a todos sus servidores.	37 Pharaoh and all his ministers approved of what he had said.
38 Por eso el Faraón les dijo a estos: «¿Podemos encontrar otro hombre que tenga en igual medida el espíritu de Dios?».	38 Then Pharaoh asked his ministers, 'Can we find anyone else endowed with the spirit of God, likehim?'
39 Y dirigiéndose a José, le expresó: «Ya que Dios te ha hecho conocer todas estas cosas, no hay nadie que sea tan prudente y sabio como tú.	39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has given you knowledge of al this, there can be no one asintelligent and wise as you.
40 Por eso tú estarás al frente de mi palacio, y todo mi pueblo tendrá que acatar tus órdenes. Sólo por el trono real seré superior a ti».	40 You shall be my chancel or, and al my people shall respect your orders; only this throne shal set meabove you.'
41 Y el Faraón siguió diciendo a José: «Ahora mismo te pongo al frente de todo el territorio de Egipto».	41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I hereby make you governor of the whole of Egypt.'
42 En seguida se quitó el anillo de su mano y lo puso en la mano de José; lo hizo vestir con ropa de lino fino y le colgó al cuello una cadena de oro.	42 Pharaoh took the ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's. He dressed him in robes of fine linen andput a gold chain round his neck.
43 Luego lo hizo subir a la mejor carroza después de la suya, e iban gritando delante de él: «¡Atención!» Así le dio autoridad sobre todo Egipto.	43 He made him ride in the best chariot he had after his own, and they shouted 'Abrek!' ahead of him.Thus he became governor of the whole of Egypt.
44 El Faraón dijo a José: «Yo soy el Faraón, pero nadie podrá mover una mano o un pie en todo el territorio de Egipto si tú no lo apruebas».	44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Although I am Pharaoh, no one is to move hand or foot without yourpermission throughout Egypt.'
45 Luego impuso a José el nombre de Safnat Panéaj, y le dio por esposa a Asnat, la hija de Potifera, sacerdote de la ciudad de On. Y José fue a recorrer el país de Egipto.	45 Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-Paneah, and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest ofOn, to be his wife. And Joseph began to journey al over Egypt.
46 Cuando se puso al servicio del Faraón, rey de Egipto, José tenía treinta años. José se alejó de la presencia del Faraón e hizo un recorrido por todo el territorio de Egipto.	46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. After leavingPharaoh's presence, Joseph travel ed throughout the length and breadth of Egypt.
47 Durante los siete años de abundancia, la tierra produjo copiosamente,	47 During the seven years of plenty, the soil yielded generously.
48 y él reunió todos los víveres recogidos en esos siete años y los almacenó en las ciudades, depositando en cada una de las cosechas de los campos vecinos.	48 He col ected al the food of the seven years while there was an abundance in Egypt, and stored thefood in the towns, placing in each the food from the surrounding countryside.
49 De esa manera, José acumuló una enorme cantidad de cereales, tanto como la arena del mar, hasta tal punto que dejó de llevar un control, porque superaba toda medida.	49 Joseph gathered in grain like the sand of the sea, in such quantity that he gave up keeping count,since it was past accounting.
50 Antes que comenzaran los años de hambre, José tuvo dos hijos, que le dio Asnat, la hija de Potifera, el sacerdote de On.	50 Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph: Asenath daughter of Potiphera,priest of On, bore him these.
51 Al primero lo llamó Manasés, porque dijo: «Dios me ha hecho olvidar por completo mis penas y mi casa paterna».	51 Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me completely forget myhardships and my father's House.'
52 Y al segundo le puso el nombre de Efraím, diciendo: «Dios me ha hecho fecundo en la tierra de mi aflicción».	52 He named the second Ephraim, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me fruitful in the country of mymisfortune.'
53 Entonces terminaron los años en que Egipto gozó de abundancia,	53 Then the seven years of plenty that there had been in Egypt came to an end,
54 y comenzaron los siete años de hambre, como José lo había anticipado. En todos los países se sufría hambre, pero en Egipto había alimentos.	54 and the seven years of famine set in, as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in every country,but throughout Egypt there was food.
55 Cuando también los egipcios y el pueblo sintieron hambre, y el pueblo pidió a gritos al Faraón que le diera de comer, este respondió: «Vayan a ver a José y hagan lo que él les diga».	55 But when al Egypt too began to feel the famine and the people appealed to Pharaoh for food,Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, 'Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.'
56 Como el hambre se había extendido por todo el país, José abrió los graneros y distribuyó raciones a los egipcios, ya que el hambre se hacía cada vez más intensa.	56 There was famine all over the world. Then Joseph opened al the granaries and rationed out grain tothe Egyptians, as the famine grew even worse in Egypt.
57 Y de todas partes iban a Egipto a comprar cereales a José, porque el hambre asolaba toda la tierra.	57 People came to Egypt from al over the world to get supplies from Joseph, for the famine had grownsevere throughout the world.
