EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Cuando José fue llevado a Egipto, Putifar –un egipcio que era funcionario del Faraón, capitán de guardias– lo compró a los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allí.	1 Now Joseph had been taken down into Egypt. Potiphar the Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.
2 Pero como el Señor estaba con José, la suerte lo favoreció, y quedó en la casa de su patrón, el egipcio.	2 Yahweh was with Joseph, and everything he undertook was successful. He lodged in the house of hisEgyptian master,
3 Al ver que el Señor estaba con él y hacía prosperar todas las obras que realizaba,	3 and when his master saw how Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh made everything he undertooksuccessful,
4 su patrón lo miró con buenos ojos y lo nombró su mayordomo, poniéndolo al frente de su casa y confiándole la administración de todos sus bienes.	4 he was pleased with Joseph and made him his personal attendant; and his master put him in chargeof his household, entrusting him with al his possessions.
5 A partir del momento en que le encomendó el cuidado de su casa y de todas sus posesiones, el Señor bendijo la casa del egipcio, en atención a José. La bendición del Señor se extendía a todas sus posesiones, dentro y fuera de la casa.	5 And from the time he put him in charge of his household and al his possessions, Yahweh blessed theEgyptian's household out of consideration for Joseph; Yahweh's blessing extended to al his possessions, bothhousehold and estate.
6 Por eso dejó a cargo de José todo lo que poseía, y ya no se preocupó más de nada, fuera del alimento que comía.	6 So he left Joseph to handle al his possessions, and with him there, concerned himself with nothingbeyond the food he ate. Now Joseph was wel built and handsome,
7 después de un tiempo, la esposa de su patrón fijó sus ojos en él y le dijo: «Acuéstate conmigo».	7 and it happened some time later that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, 'Sleep withme.'
8 Pero él se negó y respondió a la mujer: «Teniéndome a mí, mi patrón ya no piensa en los asuntos de su casa, porque me ha confiado todo lo que posee.	8 But he refused. 'Look,' he said to his master's wife, 'with me here, my master does not concernhimself with what happens in the house, having entrusted al his possessions to me.
9 El mismo no ejerce más autoridad que yo en esta casa, y no me ha impuesto ninguna restricción, fuera del respeto que te es debido, ya que eres su esposa. ¿Cómo entonces voy a cometer un delito tan grave y a pecar contra Dios?».	9 He himself wields no more authority in this house than I do. He has exempted nothing from me exceptyourself, because you are his wife. How could I do anything so wicked, and sin against God?'
10 Y por más que ella lo instigaba día tras día, él no accedió a acostarse con ella y a ser su amante.	10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not agree to sleep with her or be with her.
11 Pero un día, José entró en la casa para cumplir con sus obligaciones, en el preciso momento en que todo el personal de servicio se encontraba ausente.	11 But one day when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the householdhappened to be indoors,
12 Entonces ella lo tomó de la ropa y le insistió: «Acuéstate conmigo». Pero él huyó, dejando su manto en las manos de la mujer, y se alejó de allí.	12 she caught hold of him by his tunic and said, 'Sleep with me.' But he left the tunic in her hand, took tohis heels and got out.
13 Cuando ella vio que José había dejado el manto entre sus manos y se había escapado,	13 When she saw that he had left the tunic in her hands as he ran out,
14 llamó a sus servidores y les dijo: «¡Miren! Mi marido nos ha traído un hebreo, sólo para que se ría de nosotros. El intentó acostarse conmigo, pero yo grité lo más fuerte que pude.	14 she cal ed her servants and said to them, 'Look at this! My husband brought in a Hebrew to make afool of me! He burst in on me, but I screamed,
15 Y cuando me oyó gritar pidiendo auxilio, dejó su manto a mi lado y se escapó».	15 and when he heard me scream, he left his tunic beside me and ran out of the house.'
16 Ella guardó el manto de José hasta que regresó su marido,	16 She kept his tunic by her until his master came home.
17 y entonces le contó la misma historia: «El esclavo hebreo que nos trajiste se ha burlado de mí y pretendió violarme.	17 Then she told him the same tale, 'The Hebrew slave you brought to us burst in on me to make a foolof me.
18 Pero cuando yo grité pidiendo auxilio, él dejó su manto a mi lado y se escapó».	18 But when I screamed, he left his tunic beside me and ran away.'
19 Al oír las palabras de su mujer: «Tu esclavo me hizo esto y esto», su patrón se enfureció,	19 When his master heard his wife say, 'This was how your slave treated me,' he became furious.
20 hizo detener a José, y lo puso en la cárcel donde estaban recluidos los prisioneros del rey. Así fue a parar a la cárcel.	20 Joseph's master had him arrested and committed to the gaol where the king's prisoners were kept.And there in gaol he stayed.
21 Pero el Señor estaba con José y le mostró su bondad, haciendo que se ganara la simpatía del jefe de los carceleros.	21 But Yahweh was with Joseph. He showed him faithful love and made him popular with the chiefgaoler.
22 Este confió a José todos los presos que había en la cárcel, y él dirigía todo lo que allí se hacía.	22 The chief gaoler put Joseph in charge of al the prisoners in the gaol, making him responsible foreverything done there.
23 El jefe de los carceleros no vigilaba absolutamente nada de lo que había confiado a José, porque el Señor estaba con él y hacía prosperar todo lo que él realizaba.	23 The chief gaoler did not bother about anything put in his charge, since Yahweh was with him, andYahweh made everything he undertook successful.
