1 Samuel 25

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Samuel murió. Todo Israel se congregó para llorarle y lo sepultaron en su heredad, en Ramá. David se levantó y bajó al desierto de Maón.	1 Samuel died and all Israel assembled to mourn for him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Davidthen set off and went down to the desert of Maon.
2 Había un hombre en Maón que tenía su hacienda en Carmelo. Era un hombre muy rico; poseía 3.000 ovejas y mil cabras. Estaba entonces en Carmelo, esquilando su rebaño.	2 Now, there was a man in Maon whose business was at Carmel; the man was very rich: he ownedthree thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was then at Carmel, having his sheep shorn.
3 El hombre se llamaba Nabal y su mujer se llamaba Abigaíl; ella era muy prudente y hermosa, pero el hombre era duro y de mala conducta. Era calebita.	3 The man's name was Nabal and his wife's Abigail. She was a woman of intel igence and beauty, butthe man was miserly and churlish. He was a Calebite.
4 Supo David en el desierto que Nabal estaba esquilando su rebaño	4 When David heard in the desert that Nabal was at his sheepshearing,
5 y mandó diez muchachos diciéndoles: «Subid a Carmelo y llegad donde Nabal y le saludáis en mi nombre,	5 he sent ten men off, having said to them, 'Go up to Carmel, visit Nabal and greet him from me.
6 y hablad así a mi hermano; Salud para tí, salud para tu casa y salud para todo lo tuyo.	6 And this is what you are to say to my brother, "Peace to you, peace to your family, peace to al that isyours!
7 He sabido que estás de esquileo; pues bien, tus pastores han estado con nosotros y nunca les hemos molestado ni han echado en falta nada de lo suyo mientras estuvieron en Carmelo.	7 I hear that you now have the shearers; your shepherds were with us recently: we did not molest them,nor did they lose anything al the while they were at Carmel.
8 Pregunta a tus criados y ellos te lo dirán. Que estos muchachos encuentren, pues gracia a tus ojos, ya que hemos venido en un día de fiesta, y dales lo que tengas a mano para tus siervos y tu hijo David.”»	8 Ask your young men and they wil tel you. I hope that you will give the men a welcome, coming as wedo on a festival. Whatever you have to hand please give to your servants and to your son David." '
9 Llegaron los muchachos de David, dijeron a Nabal todas estas palabras en nombre de David y se quedaron esperando.	9 David's men went and said al this to Nabal for David, and waited.
10 Pero Nabal respondió a los servidores de David: «¿Quién es David y quién es el hijo de Jesé? Abundan hoy en día los siervos que andan huídos de sus señores.	10 Nabal retorted to the men in David's service, 'Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?
11 ¿Voy a tomar acaso mi pan y mi vino y las reses que he sacrificado para los esquiladores y se las voy a dar a unos hombres que no sé de dónde son?»	11 There are many servants nowadays who run away from their masters. Am I to take my bread and mywine and the meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men who come from I know not where?'
12 Los muchachos de David dieron la vuelta y se volvieron por su camino, y en llegando le conmunicaron todas estas palabras.	12 David's men turned on their heels and went back, and on their arrival told him exactly what had beensaid.
13 David dijo a sus hombres: «Que cada uno ciña su espada». Todos ciñeron su espada. También David se ciñó su espada. Subieron detrás de David unos cuatrocientos hombres, quedándose doscientos con el bagaje.	13 David then said to his men, 'Every man buckle on his sword!' And they buckled on their swords, andDavid buckled on his too; about four hundred fol owed David while two hundred stayed with the baggage.
14 Uno de los servidores avisó a Abigaíl, mujer de Nabal, diciendo: «Mira que David ha enviado mensajeros desde el desierto para saludar a nuestro amo, y se ha lanzado contra ellos.	14 Now one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife. He said, 'David sent messengers from thedesert to greet our master, but he flared up at them.
15 Sin embargo, esos hombres han sido muy buenos con nosotros, y nada echamos en falta mientras anduvimos con ellos, cuando estábamos en el campo.	15 Now, these men were very good to us; they did not molest us and we lost nothing al the time we hadanything to do with them while we were out in the country.
16 Fueron nuestra defensa noche y día todo el tiempo que estuvimos con ellos guardando el ganado.	16 Night and day, they were like a rampart to us, al the time we were with them, minding the sheep.
17 Date cuenta y mira lo que debes hacer, porque ya está decretada la ruina de nuestro amo y de toda la casa, y es un necio al que nada se puede decir.	17 So now make up your mind what you should do, for the ruin of our master and his whole family is acertainty, and he is such a brute that no one can say a word to him.'
18 Tomó Abigaíl a toda prisa doscientos panes y dos ordres de vino, cinco carneros ya preparados, cinco arrobas de trigo tostado, cien racimos de uvas pasas y doscientos panes de higos secos, y lo cargó sobre unos asnos,	18 Abigail hastily took two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep ready prepared, five measuresof roasted grain, a hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs and loaded them on donkeys.
19 diciendo a sus servidores: «Pasad delante de mí, que yo os sigo». Pero nada dijo a su marido Nabal.	19 She said to her servants, 'Go on ahead, I shal fol ow you' -- but she did not tel her husband Nabal.
20 Cuando bajaba ella, montada en el asno, por lo cubierto de la montaña, David y sus hombres bajaban en dirección contraria y se tropezó con ellos.	20 As she was riding her donkey down behind a fold in the mountain, David and his men happened tobe coming down in her direction; and she met them.
21 David se decía: «Muy en vano he guardado en el desierto todo lo de este hombre para que nada de lo suyo le faltase, pues me devuelve mal por bien.	21 Now, David had decided, 'It was a waste of time my guarding al this man's property in the desert sothat he lost nothing at all! He has repaid me bad for good.
22 Esto haga Dios a David y esto otro añada si para el alba dejo con vida ni un solo varón de los de Nabal».	22 May God bring unnameable il s on David and worse ones, too, if by morning I leave a single manjackalive of all who belong to him!'
23 Apenas vio a David, se apresuró Abigaíl a bajar del asno y cayendo ante David se postró en tierra, y	23 As soon as Abigail saw David, she quickly dismounted from the donkey and, falling on her face infront of David, prostrated herself on the ground.
24 arrojándose a sus pies le dijo: «Caiga sobre mí la falta, señor. Deja que tu sierva hable a tus oídos y eschucha las palabras de tu sierva.	24 She fell at his feet and said, 'Let me take the blame, my lord. Let your servant speak in your ear;listen to what your servant has to say!
25 No haga caso mi señor de este necio de Nabal; porque le va bien el nombre: necio se llama y la necedad está con él; yo, tu sierva, no vi a los siervos que mi señor había enviado.	25 My lord, please pay no attention to this brute Nabal for his nature is like his name; "Brute" is hisname and brutal he is. But I, your servant, did not see the men whom my lord sent.
26 Ahora, mi señor, por Yahveh y por tu vida, por Yahveh que te ha impedido derramar sangre y tomarte la justicia por tu propia mano, que sean como Nabal tus enemigos y los que buscan la ruina de mi señor.	26 And now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, by Yahweh who kept you from the crimeof bloodshed and from taking vengeance with your own hand, may your enemies and al those ill-disposedtowards you become like Nabal.
27 Cuanto a este presente que tu sierva ha hecho traer para mi señor, que sea entregado a los muchachos que marchan en pos de mi señor.	27 As for the present which your servant has brought my lord, I should like this to be given to the men inyour service.
28 Perdona, por favor, la falta de tu sierva, ya que ciertamente hará Yahveh una casa permanente a mi señor, pues mi señor combate las batallas de Yahveh y no vendrá mal sobre ti en toda tu vida.	28 Please forgive your servant for any offence I have given you, for Yahweh wil certainly assure you ofa lasting dynasty, since you are fighting Yahweh's battles and no fault has been found in you throughout yourlife.
29 Y aunque se alza un hombre para perseguirte y buscar tu vida, la vida de mi señor está encerrada en la bolsa de la vida, al lado de Yahveh tu Dios, mientras que la vida de los enemigos de mi señor la volteará en el hueco de la honda.	29 Should anyone set out to hunt you down and try to kil you, your life wil be kept close in the wal et oflife with Yahweh your God, while your enemies' lives he wil fling out of the pouch of the sling.
30 Cuando haga Yahveh a mi señor todo el bien que te ha prometido y te haya establecido como caudillo de Israel,	30 Once Yahweh has done for you al the good things which he has said he will do for you, and madeyou ruler of Israel,
31 que no haya turbación ni remordimiento en el corazón de mi señor por haber derramado sangre inocente y haberse tomado mi señor la justicia por su mano; y cuando Yahveh haya favorecido a mi señor. acuérdase de tu sierva».	31 you must have no anxiety, my lord, no remorse, over having wantonly shed blood, over having takena revenge. When Yahweh has done wel by you, then remember your servant.'
32 David dijo a Abigaíl: «Bendito sea Yahveh, Dios de Israel, que te ha enviado hoy a mi encuentro.	32 David said to Abigail, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who sent you to meet me today!
33 Bendita sea tu prudencia y bendita tú misma que me has impedido derramar sangre y tomarme la justicia por mi mano.	33 Blessed be your wisdom and blessed you yourself for today having restrained me from the crime ofbloodshed and from exacting revenge!
34 Pero con todo, vive Yahveh, Dios de Israel, que me ha impedido hacerte mal, que de no haberte apresurado a venir a mi encuentro, no le hubiera quedado a Nabal, al romper el alba, ni un solo varón».	34 But as Yahweh, God of Israel, lives, who prevented me from harming you, had you not hurried out tomeet me, I swear Nabal would not have had a single manjack left alive by morning!'
35 Tomó David de mano de ella lo que le traía y le dijo: «Sube en paz a tu casa; mira, he escuchado tu voz y he accedido a tu petición».	35 David then accepted what she had brought him and said, 'Go home in peace; yes, I have listened toyou and have pardoned you.'
36 Cuando Abigaíl llegó donde Nabal, estaba celebrando en su casa un banquete regio; estaba alegre su corazón y completamente borracho. No le dijo una palabra, ni grande ni pequeña, hasta el lucir del día.	36 Abigail returned to Nabal. He was holding a feast, a princely feast, in his house; Nabal was in highspirits, and as he was very drunk she told him nothing at al til it was daylight.
37 Pero a la mañana, cuando se le pasó el vino a Nabal, le contó su mujer lo sucedido; el corazón se le murió en el pecho y se le quedó como una piedra.	37 In the morning, when Nabal's wine had left him and his wife told him everything that had happened,his heart died within him and he became like a stone.
38 Al cabo de unos diez días hirió Yahveh a Nabal y murió.	38 About ten days later Yahweh struck Nabal, and he died.
39 Oyó David que Nabal había muerto y dijo: «Bendito sea Yahveh que ha defendido mi causa contra la injuria de Nabal y ha preservado a su siervo de hacer mal. Yahveh ha hecho caer la maldad de Nabal sobre su cabeza». Envió David mensajeros para proponer a Abigaíl que fuera su mujer.	39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, 'Blessed be Yahweh for having defended my causeover the insult which I received from Nabal, and for having restrained his servant from doing wrong! Yahweh hasmade Nabal's wickedness rebound on his own head!'
40 Llegaron los mensajeros de David a casa de Abigaíl en Carmelo y le hablaron diciendo: «David nos envía a ti para tomarte por mujer».	40 David then sent Abigail an offer of marriage. When the men in David's service came to Abigail atCarmel, they said, 'David has sent us to take you to him, to be his wife.'
41 Se levantó ella y se postró rostro en tierra diciendo: «Tu sierva es una esclava para lavar los pies de los siervos de mi señor».	41 She stood up, then prostrated herself on the ground. 'Consider your servant a slave', she said, 'towash the feet of my lord's servants.'
42 Se levantó Abigaíl apresuradamente, montó en su asno y, seguida de cinco de sus siervas, se fue tras los enviados de David y fue su mujer.	42 Quickly Abigail stood up again and mounted a donkey; fol owed by five of her servant-girls, shefol owed David's messengers and became his wife.
43 David había tomado también por mujer a Ajinoam de Yizreel y las dos fueron mujeres suyas.	43 David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel and he kept them both as wives.
44 Saúl había dado su hija Mikal, mujer de David, a Paltí, hijo de Layis, de Gallim.	44 Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti son of Laish, from Gal im.
