1 Ajitófel dijo a Absalón: «Voy a elegir 12.000 hombres y me lanzaré en persecución de David esta misma noche.	1 Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David tonight.
2 Caeré sobre él cuando esté fatigado y falto de fuerzas, le llenaré de espanto y huirá toda la gente que está con él; heriré al rey solamente	2 If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall strike down the king alone.
3 y haré que vuelva a ti todo el pueblo, como la novia viene a su esposo; solamente buscas la muerte de un hombre y todo el pueblo quedará a salvo».	3 Then I can bring back the rest of the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at peace."
4 Pareció bueno el consejo a Absalón y a todos los ancianos de Israel.	4 This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 Pero Absalón dijo: «Llamad también a Jusay el arquita y oigámosle también a él».	5 Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also; let us hear what he too has to say."
6 Llegó Jusay donde Absalón y Absalón dijo: «Ajitófel nos ha dicho esto. ¿Debemos hacer lo que dice? Si no, habla tu».	6 When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him: "This is what Ahithophel proposed. Shall we follow his proposal? If not, speak up."
7 Jusay dijo a Absalón: «Por esta vez, no es bueno el consejo de Ajitófel».	7 Hushai replied to Absalom, "This time Ahithophel has not given good counsel."
8 Añadió Jusay: «Tú ya sabes que tu padre y sus hombres son gente valerosa y están exasperados como una osa salvaje a la que han quitado sus oseznos. Tu padre es hombre de guerra y no permitirá que el pueblo descanse durante la noche.	8 And he went on to say: "You know that your father and his men are warriors, and that they are as fierce as a bear in the wild robbed of her cubs. Moreover, since your father is skilled in warfare, he will not spend the night with the people.
9 Ahora estará escondido en alguna caverna o en algún lugar. Si caen al principio algunos de los nuestros se correrá el rumor y se dirá: Ha habido un desastre en la tropa que sigue a Absalón.	9 Even now he lies hidden in one of the caves or in some other place. And if some of our soldiers should fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'Absalom's followers have been slaughtered.'
10 Y sucederá que incluso los más valientes, cuyo corazón es como corazón de león, perderán el ánimo, porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es esforzado y que son valerosos los que están con él.	10 Then even the brave man with the heart of a lion will lose courage. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave.
11 Por eso te aconsejo que reúnas en torno a ti a todo Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, como la arena que hay en la orilla del mar, y tú marcharás en persona en medio de ellos.	11 "This is what I counsel: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba, who are as numerous as the sands by the sea, be called up for combat; and go with them yourself.
12 Nos acercaremos a él en cualquier lugar en que se encuentre, caeremos sobre él como cae el rocío sobre la tierra y no dejaremos con vida ni a él ni a uno solo de los hombres que le acompañan.	12 We can then attack him wherever we find him, settling down upon him as dew alights on the ground. None shall survive--neither he nor any of his followers.
13 Si se recoge a una ciudad, todo Israel llevará cuerdas y la arrastraremos hasta el torrente, de modo que no se pueda hallar en ella ni un pedrusco».	13 And if he retires into a city, all Israel shall bring ropes to that city and we can drag it into the gorge, so that not even a pebble of it can be found."
14 Absalón y todos los hombres de Israel dijeron: «El consejo de Jusay el arquita es mejor que el consejo de Ajitófel». Es que Yahveh había decidido frustrar el consejo de Ajitófel - que era bueno - para traer Yahveh la ruina sobre Absalón.	14 Then Absalom and all the Israelites pronounced the counsel of Hushai the Archite better than that of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decided to undo Ahithophel's good counsel, in order thus to bring Absalom to ruin.
15 Después Jusay dijo a los sacerdotes Sadoq y Abiatar: «Esto ha aconsejado Ajitófel a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel; y esto y esto he aconsejado yo.	15 Then Hushai said to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: "This is the counsel Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I counseled.
16 Ahora mandad rápidamente a avisar a David: “No hagas noche en las llanuras del desierto. Pasa sin tardanza al otro lado, no vaya a ser devorado el rey y todo el pueblo que le acompaña.”»	16 So send a warning to David immediately, not to spend the night at the fords near the desert, but to cross over without fail. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be destroyed."
17 Jonatán y Ajimaas estaban apostados en la fuente de Roguel. Una criada vendría a avisarles y ellos irían a comunicárselo al rey David, porque no podían dejarse ver al entrar en la ciudad.	17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, since they could not risk being seen entering the city. A maidservant was to come with information for them, and they in turn were to go and report to King David.
18 Pero los vio un muchacho y avisó a Absalón. Entonces los dos partieron a toda prisa y entraron en casa de un hombre de Bajurim. Tenía éste un pozo en el patio y los bajaron a él.	18 But an attendant saw them and informed Absalom. They sped on their way and reached the house of a man in Bahurim who had a cistern in his courtyard. They let themselves down into this,
19 La mujer tomó una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo, y puso encima grano trillado; de modo que no se notaba nada.	19 and the housewife took the cover and spread it over the cistern, strewing ground grain on the cover so that nothing could be noticed.
20 Llegó la gente de Absalón a la casa, donde la mujer, y dijeron: «¿Dónde están Ajimaas y Jonatán?» La mujer respondió: «Han pasado más allá hacia el agua». Buscaron, pero no hallaron nada y se volvieron a Jerusalén.	20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman replied, "They went by a short while ago toward the water." They searched, but found no one, and so returned to Jerusalem.
21 Después que se fueron, subieron ellos del pozo y fueron a avisar al rey David diciéndole: «Llevantos y pasad aprisa el agua, porque este consejo les ha dado Ajitófel contra vosotros».	21 As soon as they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the cistern and went on to inform King David. They said to him: "Leave! Cross the water at once, for Ahithophel has given the following counsel in regard to you."
22 Se levantó David y todo el pueblo que estaba con él y pasaron el Jordán; al romper la luz de la mañana no quedaba nadie sin pasar el Jordán.	22 So David and all his people moved on and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed.
23 Cuando vio Ajitófel que no habían seguido con su consejo, aparejó el asno y levantándose fue a su casa en su ciudad; ordenó su casa, y luego se ahorcó y murió. Le sepultaron en la tumba de su padre.	23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not acted upon, he saddled his ass and departed, going to his home in his own city. Then, having left orders concerning his family, he hanged himself. And so he died and was buried in his father's tomb.
24 Llegaba David a Majanáyim cuando atravesaba Absalón el Jordán con todos los hombres de Israel.	24 Now David had gone to Mahanaim when Absalom crossed the Jordan accompanied by all the Israelites.
25 Absalón había puesto a Amasá al frente del ejército, en lugar de Joab. Amasá era hijo de un hombre llamado Yitrá el ismaelita, que se había unido con Abigaíl, hija de Jesé, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab.	25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab's place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.
26 Israel y Absalón acamparon en tierra de Galaad.	26 Israel and Absalom encamped in the territory of Gilead.
27 Cuando David llegó a Majanáyim, Sobí, hijo de Najás, de Rabbá de los ammonitas, y Makir, hijo de Ammiel, de Lo Debar, y Barzillay de Galaad de Roguelim,	27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir, son of Ammiel from Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite from Rogelim,
28 llevaron lechos, esteras, copas y vasos de barro, así como trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, lentejas, habas,	28 brought couches, coverlets, basins and earthenware, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,
29 miel, cuajada, ovejas y quesos de vaca, y lo ofrecieron a David y a la gente que estaba con él, para que comiesen, pues se habían dicho: «La gente habrá pasado hambre, fatigas y sed en el desierto».	29 honey, butter and cheese from the flocks and herds, for David and those who were with him to eat; for they said, "The people have been hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert."
