1 Les Philistins avaient donc capturé l’Arche de Dieu, ils la transportèrent d’Ében-Ha-Ézer à Ashdod.	1 The Philistines, having captured the ark of God, transferred it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2 Ils prirent l’Arche de Dieu et la placèrent dans le temple de Dagon à côté de la statue de Dagon.	2 They then took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon, placing it beside Dagon.
3 Le lendemain, lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod se levèrent, tôt le matin, et vinrent au temple de Dagon, ils virent Dagon par terre: il était tombé sur sa face devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Ils relevèrent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.	3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next morning, Dagon was lying prone on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they picked Dagon up and replaced him.
4 Le lendemain de bon matin, ils se levèrent et, cette fois encore, Dagon était par terre, sur le nez, devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Le tronc de Dagon était resté en place, mais la tête et les deux mains lui manquaient et gisaient sur le seuil;	4 But the next morning early, when they arose, Dagon lay prone on the ground before the ark of the LORD, his head and hands broken off and lying on the threshold, his trunk alone intact.
5 c’est d’ailleurs pour cela que les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans le temple de Dagon à Ashdod, encore aujourd’hui, ne foulent pas de leurs pieds le seuil de Dagon.	5 For this reason, neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter the temple of Dagon tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this very day; they always step over it.
6 La main de Yahvé s’abattit sur les habitants d’Ashdod, il les tourmenta et envoya des tumeurs aussi bien sur Ashdod que sur ses environs.	6 Now the LORD dealt severely with the people of Ashdod. He ravaged and afflicted the city and its vicinity with hemorrhoids; he brought upon the city a great and deadly plague of mice that swarmed in their ships and overran their fields.
7 Lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod virent ce qui leur arrivait, ils dirent: “Il ne faut pas que l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël reste chez nous, car il a eu la main lourde avec nous et notre Dieu Dagon.”	7 On seeing how matters stood, the men of Ashdod decided, "The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for he is handling us and our god Dagon severely."
8 Ils firent donc avertir tous les princes des Philistins et les réunirent chez eux. Ils leur dirent: “Qu’allons-nous faire de l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël?” Les autres répondirent: “L’Arche du Dieu d’Israël ira à Gat.” On emmena donc l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël.	8 So they summoned all the Philistine lords and inquired of them, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" The men of Gath replied, "Let them move the ark of the God of Israel on to us."
9 Or, dès qu’on l’eut amenée, la main de Yahvé se fit pesante sur la ville: ce fut une grande panique. Il frappa les habitants, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, et il leur sortit des tumeurs.	9 So they moved the ark of the God of Israel to Gath! But after it had been brought there, the LORD threw the city into utter turmoil: he afflicted its inhabitants, young and old, and hemorrhoids broke out on them.
10 Ils renvoyèrent donc l’Arche de Dieu à Ékron, mais lorsque l’Arche de Dieu arriva à Ékron, les habitants de la ville s’écrièrent: “Ils nous ont amené l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël pour nous faire périr, nous et notre peuple!”	10 The ark of God was next sent to Ekron; but as it entered that city, the people there cried out, "Why have they brought the ark of the God of Israel here to kill us and our kindred?"
11 On rassembla donc tous les princes des Philistins: “Renvoyez l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël, dirent-ils, qu’elle retourne d’où elle vient. Sinon nous allons mourir, nous et notre peuple.” Il y avait en effet une terrible panique dans toute la ville, tellement la main de Dieu s’était faite pesante.	11 Then they, too, sent a summons to all the Philistine lords and pleaded: "Send away the ark of the God of Israel. Let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our kindred." A deadly panic had seized the whole city, since the hand of God had been very heavy upon it.
12 Ceux qui ne mouraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs, et une grande lamentation montait de la ville jusqu’au ciel.	12 Those who escaped death were afflicted with hemorrhoids, and the outcry from the city went up to the heavens.
