| 1 En ces jours-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël. C’était le moment où la tribu de Dan cherchait un territoire où s’installer, car jusqu’à ce jour ils n’avaient pas reçu d’héritage au milieu des tribus d’Israël. | 1 In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in; for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them. |
| 2 Les gens de Dan envoyèrent donc de chez eux cinq hommes de leur clan, des hommes solides de Soréa et d’Echtaol, pour faire une reconnaissance dans le pays et l’explorer. Ils leur dirent: “Allez inspecter le pays.” Ceux-ci arrivèrent donc dans les monts d’Éphraïm, près de la maison de Mika, et là ils passèrent la nuit. | 2 So the Danites sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshta-ol, to spy out the land and to explore it; and they said to them, "Go and explore the land." And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there. |
| 3 Comme ils étaient tout près de la maison de Mika, ils entendirent la voix du jeune Lévite et ils firent un détour. Ils le questionnèrent: “Qui t’a amené ici? Que fais-tu en ce lieu? Qu’as-tu ici?” | 3 When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; and they turned aside and said to him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?" |
| 4 Il leur répondit: “Mika a fait pour moi ceci et cela, il me paie et je lui sers de prêtre.” | 4 And he said to them, "Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest." |
| 5 Ils lui dirent: “Consulte donc Dieu pour que nous sachions si ce voyage que nous sommes en train de faire, réussira.” | 5 And they said to him, "Inquire of God, we pray thee, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed." |
| 6 Le prêtre leur dit: “Allez en paix! Votre voyage est sous le regard de Dieu.” | 6 And the priest said to them, "Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the LORD." |
| 7 Les cinq hommes s’en allèrent donc et ils arrivèrent à Laïch. Ils virent que les habitants vivaient sans crainte, selon l’habitude des Sidoniens, que la ville était paisible et confiante, sans roi pour la gouverner, qu’ils étaient loin des Sidoniens et n’avaient de liens avec personne. | 7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people who were there, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth, and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with any one. |
| 8 Quand ils retournèrent vers leurs frères à Soréa et Echtaol, ceux-ci leur demandèrent: “Alors! Quelles nouvelles?” | 8 And when they came to their brethren at Zorah and Eshta-ol, their brethren said to them, "What do you report?" |
| 9 Ils répondirent: “Debout! Allons! Nous avons vu une terre magnifique! Mais quoi, vous restez là! Allez, en route, il faut nous emparer de cette région! | 9 They said, "Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very fertile. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, and enter in and possess the land. |
| 10 Vous trouverez là un peuple sans méfiance. Leur territoire est vaste et large, Dieu l’a livré entre vos mains. Rien ne manque là-bas de tout ce qu’on peut trouver sur la terre.” | 10 When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is broad; yea, God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth." |
| 11 Les Danites partirent donc de Soréa et Echtaol au nombre de 600 hommes équipés pour la guerre. | 11 And six hundred men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set forth from Zorah and Eshta-ol, |
| 12 Ils montèrent à Kiryat-Yéarim en Juda, où ils campèrent. C’est pour cela qu’on a appelé ce lieu Camp-de-Dan jusqu’à ce jour: il se trouve à l’ouest de Kiryat-Yéarim. | 12 and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim. |
| 13 De là ils partirent pour la montagne d’Éphraïm et arrivèrent près de la maison de Mika. | 13 And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah. |
| 14 Alors, les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays jusqu’à Laïch, prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: “Savez-vous qu’il y a dans l’une de ces maisons un éphod et des téraphim, une idole et une statuette de bronze? Pensez un peu à ce que vous devez faire.” | 14 Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish said to their brethren, "Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, teraphim, a graven image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you will do." |
| 15 Ils firent un détour et entrèrent dans la maison de Mika. Le jeune Lévite était là et ils le saluèrent | 15 And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him of his welfare. |
| 16 tandis que les 600 hommes, les Danites en armes, se tenaient devant l’entrée de la porte. | 16 Now the six hundred men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate; |
| 17 Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays, montèrent, entrèrent dans la maison, prirent l’idole, l’éphod, les téraphim et la statuette de bronze. Le prêtre était là à l’entrée de la porte avec les 600 hommes en armes. | 17 and the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up, and entered and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war. |
| 18 Voyant les cinq hommes qui entraient dans la maison de Mika, prenaient l’idole, l’éphod, les téraphim et la statuette de bronze, le prêtre leur dit: “Qu’est-ce que vous faites là?” | 18 And when these went into Micah's house and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?" |
| 19 Ils répondirent: “Tais-toi! Mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous: tu seras pour nous un père et un prêtre. Que vaut-il mieux pour toi: être le prêtre d’un seul homme dans sa maison, ou être le prêtre de toute une tribu, de tout un clan en Israël?” | 19 And they said to him, "Keep quiet, put your hand upon your mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and family in Israel?" |
| 20 Le prêtre en eut la joie au cœur. Il prit l’éphod, les téraphim, l’idole, la statuette de bronze et se mit en route avec tous ces hommes. | 20 And the priest's heart was glad; he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people. |
| 21 Au moment de reprendre leur marche ils avaient placé devant eux les petits enfants, le bétail et les bagages. | 21 So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the cattle and the goods in front of them. |
| 22 Comme ils étaient déjà loin de la maison, les proches voisins de Mika s’attroupèrent et se lancèrent à la poursuite des Danites; | 22 When they were a good way from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah's house were called out, and they overtook the Danites. |
| 23 et ils criaient derrière eux. Les Danites se retournèrent et dirent à Mika: “Pourquoi cet attroupement?” | 23 And they shouted to the Danites, who turned round and said to Micah, "What ails you that you come with such a company?" |
| 24 Il leur répondit: “Vous avez pris les dieux que je m’étais fabriqués, vous me prenez mon prêtre et vous partez! Que me reste-t-il? Et vous me demandez ce qu’il y a?” | 24 And he said, "You take my gods which I made, and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, 'What ails you?" |
| 25 Les Danites lui dirent: “Arrête de crier sur nous, car des hommes agacés pourraient bien se jeter sur vous; toi et ta famille vous pourriez bien y laisser votre peau!” | 25 And the Danites said to him, "Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life with the lives of your household." |
| 26 Les Danites reprirent leur route et, voyant qu’ils étaient les plus forts, Mika fit demi-tour et revint à sa maison. | 26 Then the Danites went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home. |
| 27 Les Danites emmenèrent donc tout ce qu’avait fait Mika, ainsi que le prêtre qui était chez lui, et ils tombèrent à Laïch sur une population paisible et sans méfiance. Ils passèrent tout le monde au fil de l’épée et brûlèrent la ville. | 27 And taking what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, the Danites came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire. |
| 28 Il n’y eut personne pour la sauver, car Sidon était éloignée et eux n’avaient de lien avec personne. La ville en effet se trouve dans la plaine en direction de Beth-Réhob. Ils la reconstruisirent et s’y installèrent. | 28 And there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any one. It was in the valley which belongs to Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city, and dwelt in it. |
| 29 Ils donnèrent à la ville le nom de Dan, en souvenir de leur père Dan, fils d’Israël; mais auparavant la ville s’appelait Laïch. | 29 And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first. |
| 30 Les Danites installèrent l’idole pour leur compte, et Yonathan, fils de Guerchom, fils de Moïse, et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu de Dan jusqu’au jour de la déportation. | 30 And the Danites set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land. |
| 31 Ils installèrent au milieu d’eux l’idole que Mika avait faite et cela dura aussi longtemps que la maison de Dieu à Silo. | 31 So they set up Micah's graven image which he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh. |
