| 1 Les Israélites recommencèrent à faire ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé, et lui les livra entre les mains des Philistins pendant 40 ans. | 1 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. |
| 2 Il y avait un homme de Soréa, de la tribu de Dan, qui s’appelait Manoa. Sa femme était stérile et n’avait pas enfanté. | 2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. |
| 3 L’Ange de Yahvé apparut à la femme et lui dit: “Jusqu’à présent tu étais stérile, et tu n’as pas enfanté, mais tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils. | 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, "Behold, you are barren and have no children; but you shall conceive and bear a son. |
| 4 Maintenant donc, fais attention à ne plus boire ni vin ni boisson enivrante, et ne mange rien d’impur | 4 Therefore beware, and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, |
| 5 à cause de ce fils que tu vas concevoir et enfanter. Car dès le sein de sa mère le garçon sera consacré à Dieu: le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête, et c’est lui qui commencera à libérer Israël de la main des Philistins.” | 5 for lo, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from birth; and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines." |
| 6 De retour chez elle, la femme parla à son mari et lui dit: “Un homme de Dieu est venu vers moi. Il était majestueux: on aurait dit un ange de Dieu. Mais je ne lui ai pas demandé d’où il venait et il ne m’a pas fait connaître son nom. | 6 Then the woman came and told her husband, "A man of God came to me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; I did not ask him whence he was, and he did not tell me his name; |
| 7 Il m’a dit ceci: ‘Tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils. Aussi, dès maintenant, ne bois plus ni vin ni boisson enivrante, et ne mange rien d’impur, car le garçon sera consacré à Dieu dès le sein de sa mère et jusqu’au jour de sa mort.’ ” | 7 but he said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; so then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from birth to the day of his death.'" |
| 8 Alors Manoa supplia Yahvé: “De grâce Mon Seigneur! Que l’homme de Dieu que tu as envoyé revienne vers nous pour nous dire comment faire avec le garçon qui va naître.” | 8 Then Manoah entreated the LORD, and said, "O, LORD, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again to us, and teach us what we are to do with the boy that will be born." |
| 9 Dieu entendit la voix de Manoa et l’ange de Dieu vint encore une fois vers la femme, alors qu’elle était assise dans les champs. Mais son mari Manoa n’était pas avec elle. | 9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. |
| 10 La femme courut aussitôt avertir son mari: “Je viens de revoir l’homme qui est venu me trouver l’autre jour.” | 10 And the woman ran in haste and told her husband, "Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me." |
| 11 Manoa se leva et suivit sa femme. Il arriva où était l’homme et lui demanda: “Tu es bien l’homme qui a parlé à cette femme?” Il répondit: “Oui, c’est moi.” | 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife, and came to the man and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to this woman?" And he said, "I am." |
| 12 Manoa lui dit: “Si ce que tu as dit se réalise, quelle règle suivrons-nous pour ce garçon, que devra-t-il faire?” | 12 And Manoah said, "Now when your words come true, what is to be the boy's manner of life, and what is he to do?" |
| 13 L’Ange de Yahvé répondit à Manoa: “La femme s’abstiendra de tout ce que j’ai dit. | 13 And the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "Of all that I said to the woman let her beware. |
| 14 Elle ne mangera d’aucun produit de la vigne, elle ne boira ni vin ni boisson enivrante, elle ne mangera rien d’impur: elle observera tout ce que je lui ai commandé.” | 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe." |
| 15 Manoa dit à l’ange de Yahvé: “Permets que nous te retenions et que nous préparions un chevreau.” | 15 Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "Pray, let us detain you, and prepare a kid for you." |
| 16 Mais l’ange de Yahvé répondit à Manoa: “Même si tu me retenais, je ne mangerais pas de ton pain. Cependant, si tu veux offrir un holocauste à Yahvé, offre-le.” Manoa en effet, ne savait pas que c’était l’Ange de Yahvé. | 16 And the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "If you detain me, I will not eat of your food; but if you make ready a burnt offering, then offer it to the LORD." (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the LORD.) |
| 17 Alors Manoa dit à l’Ange de Yahvé: “Quel est ton nom? Nous voudrions pouvoir te remercier lorsque tes paroles se réaliseront.” | 17 And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "What is your name, so that, when your words come true, we may honor you?" |
| 18 L’Ange de Yahvé lui dit: “Pourquoi me demandes-tu mon nom? Il est mystérieux.” | 18 And the angel of the LORD said to him, "Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?" |
| 19 Manoa prit le chevreau et une offrande et les disposa sur le rocher en l’honneur de Yahvé et de cet être mystérieux que Manoa et sa femme pouvaient voir. | 19 So Manoah took the kid with the cereal offering, and offered it upon the rock to the LORD, to him who works wonders. |
| 20 Or, comme la flamme s’élevait au-dessus de l’autel vers les cieux, il arriva que l’Ange de Yahvé monta dans la flamme de l’autel. À cette vue, Manoa et sa femme tombèrent la face contre terre. | 20 And when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar while Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. |
| 21 Quant à l’Ange de Yahvé, il disparut aux yeux de Manoa et de sa femme. Alors Manoa comprit que c’était l’Ange de Yahvé. | 21 The angel of the LORD appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD. |
| 22 Manoa dit à sa femme: “Nous allons mourir, car nous avons vu un Dieu.” | 22 And Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, for we have seen God." |
| 23 Mais sa femme lui répondit: “Si Yahvé voulait nous faire mourir, il n’aurait accepté ni notre holocauste ni notre offrande. Il ne nous aurait pas montré tout cela et aujourd’hui même, nous aurait-il fait entendre pareille promesse?” | 23 But his wife said to him, "If the LORD had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a cereal offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these." |
| 24 C’est ainsi que la femme mit au monde un fils à qui elle donna le nom de Samson. Le garçon grandit et Yahvé le bénit; | 24 And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson; and the boy grew, and the LORD blessed him. |
| 25 l’esprit de Yahvé commença à s’emparer de lui au Camp-de-Dan, entre Soréa et Echtaol. | 25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshta-ol. |
