| 1 Les rois du pays au-delà du Jourdain apprirent tout cela. Aussitôt, dans la montagne comme dans la plaine, sur la côte de la Grande Mer comme dans les environs du Liban, les Hittites, Amorites, Cananéens, Périsites, Hivvites et Jébusites | 1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, |
| 2 se rassemblèrent pour attaquer ensemble Josué et Israël. | 2 they gathered together with one accord to fight Joshua and Israel. |
| 3 Les habitants de Gabaon savaient comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï, | 3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, |
| 4 ils eurent donc recours à une ruse. Ils prirent avec eux des provisions de voyage, mais c’étaient des sacs usés qu’ils mirent sur leurs ânes, des outres de vin râpées, crevées et réparées. | 4 they on their part acted with cunning, and went and made ready provisions, and took worn-out sacks upon their asses, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, |
| 5 Ils avaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales usées et rapiécées, sur eux des vêtements usagés, et le pain de leurs provisions était sec et tombait en miettes. | 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes; and all their provisions were dry and moldy. |
| 6 Ils se rendirent près de Josué au camp de Guilgal, et voici ce qu’ils lui racontèrent ainsi qu’aux hommes d’Israël: “Nous venons d’un pays lointain, faites donc alliance avec nous.” Les hommes d’Israël répondirent à ces Hivvites: | 6 And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; so now make a covenant with us." |
| 7 “Peut-être habitez-vous au milieu de nous? Comment pourrons-nous faire alors alliance avec vous?” | 7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?" |
| 8 Mais ils répondirent à Josué: “Nous sommes tes serviteurs!” Josué ajouta: “Qui êtes-vous et d’où venez-vous?” | 8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." And Joshua said to them, "Who are you? And where do you come from?" |
| 9 Ils répondirent: “C’est la renommée de Yahvé, ton Dieu, qui nous a fait venir d’un pays très éloigné. Nous avons entendu parler de tout ce qu’il a fait en Égypte, | 9 They said to him, "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, |
| 10 de tout ce qu’il a fait aux deux rois des Amorites au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihon, roi de Heshbon, et à Og, roi du Bashan, qui étaient à Achtarot. | 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth. |
| 11 Alors nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des provisions pour la route, allez au-devant d’eux et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites donc alliance avec nous. | 11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We are your servants; come now, make a covenant with us."' |
| 12 Regardez, notre pain était encore chaud quand nous l’avons pris dans nos maisons le jour où nous nous sommes mis en route pour venir vers vous, et maintenant le voilà sec, il tombe en miettes. | 12 Here is our bread; it was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey, on the day we set forth to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and moldy; |
| 13 Ces outres de vin étaient neuves quand nous les avons remplies, aujourd’hui elles sont déchirées. Voyez nos vêtements et nos sandales: ils sont usés, tellement le voyage a été long.” | 13 these wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they are burst; and these garments and shoes of ours are worn out from the very long journey." |
| 14 Les hommes d’Israël partagèrent avec eux leurs provisions sans consulter l’oracle de Yahvé. | 14 So the men partook of their provisions, and did not ask direction from the LORD. |
| 15 Josué leur donna la paix et conclut avec eux une alliance qui leur garantissait la vie sauve, après quoi, les chefs de la communauté leur prêtèrent serment. | 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. |
| 16 Mais trois jours après la conclusion de cette alliance, ils apprirent que ces gens étaient des voisins et qu’ils habitaient au milieu d’eux. | 16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them. |
| 17 Les Israélites se mirent en route et le troisième jour ils atteignirent leurs villes. C’étaient Gabaon, Kéfira, Béérot et Kiryat-Yéarim. | 17 And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Be-eroth, and Kiriath-jearim. |
| 18 Les Israélites ne les mirent pas à mort, car les chefs de la communauté leur avaient prêté serment au nom de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, mais toute la communauté murmura contre les chefs. | 18 But the people of Israel did not kill them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. |
| 19 Les chefs répondirent à la communauté: “Nous leur avons fait un serment au nom de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: maintenant, nous ne pouvons plus porter la main sur eux. | 19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. |
| 20 Voici comment nous allons agir: nous les laisserons en vie pour ne pas attirer sur nous un fléau, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait. | 20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore to them." |
| 21 Mais ils feront les corvées de toute la communauté, ils fendront le bois et iront puiser l’eau.” Voilà ce que décidèrent les chefs. | 21 And the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had said of them. |
| 22 Josué les réunit et leur dit: “Pourquoi nous avoir menti? Vous avez dit que vous veniez de très loin, alors que vous habitez au milieu de nous. | 22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, "Why did you deceive us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you dwell among us? |
| 23 Maintenant vous êtes maudits, vous serez pour toujours esclaves, vous fendrez le bois et vous puiserez l’eau pour la Maison de mon Dieu.” | 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall always be slaves, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God." |
| 24 Ils répondirent à Josué: “On nous avait fait savoir les instructions de Yahvé, ton Dieu, à Moïse son serviteur: Yahvé vous donnerait tout le pays et vous deviez exterminer devant vous tous ses habitants. Nous avions très peur pour nos vies et c’est pourquoi nous avons agi de la sorte. | 24 They answered Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; so we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing. |
| 25 Maintenant nous sommes entre tes mains, traite-nous comme cela te paraîtra bon et juste.” | 25 And now, behold, we are in your hand: do as it seems good and right in your sight to do to us." |
| 26 Josué ne les livra donc pas aux Israélites, ils ne furent pas mis à mort, | 26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel; and they did not kill them. |
| 27 mais dès ce jour ils durent fendre le bois et puiser l’eau pour la communauté, pour l’autel de Yahvé, dans le lieu que lui-même devait choisir. Ils le font encore. | 27 But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to continue to this day, in the place which he should choose. |
