1 J’ai donc préféré ne pas revenir chez vous avec des reproches.	1 But I determined this within myself, not to return again to you in sorrow.
2 Car si je vous fais de la peine, personne ne me rendra la joie sinon celui à qui j’ai causé cette peine.	2 For if I make you sorrowful, then who is it that can make me glad, except the one who is made sorrowful by me?
3 Et c’est bien ce que je vous ai dit dans la lettre: “Si je viens, je ne voudrais pas avoir à m’attrister pour ceux qui devraient être ma joie, et j’espère bien que tous vous partagerez ma joie.”	3 And so, I wrote this same thing to you, so that I might not, when I arrive, add sorrow to sorrow for those with whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you in all things, so that my joy may be entirely yours.
4 Car je me voyais dans une grande détresse et très angoissé, et je vous ai écrit entre les larmes, non pour vous faire de la peine, mais pour que vous sachiez combien je vous aime.	4 For with much tribulation and anguish of heart, I wrote to you with many tears: not so that you would be sorrowful, but so that you might know the charity that I have more abundantly toward you.
5 Si quelqu’un a causé de la peine, la peine n’a pas été pour moi mais, d’une certaine façon, car je ne veux pas exagérer, pour vous tous.	5 But if anyone has brought sorrow, he has not sorrowed me. Yet, for my part, this is so that I might not burden all of you.
6 Et pour celui-là, les reproches qu’il a reçus de la majorité devraient suffire.	6 Let this rebuke be sufficient for someone like this, for it has been brought by many.
7 Maintenant vous devriez plutôt lui manifester de la bonté et l’encourager. Sinon, il ressentirait plus de peine qu’il n’en peut supporter.	7 So then, to the contrary, you should be more forgiving and consoling, lest perhaps someone like this may be overwhelmed with excessive sorrow.
8 Aussi, je vous demande de l’entourer d’affection.	8 Because of this, I beg you to confirm your charity toward him.
9 Si je vous ai écrit, c’était pour voir votre réaction et savoir si votre obéissance est entière.	9 It was for this reason, also, that I wrote, so that I might know, by testing you, whether you would be obedient in all things.
10 Si vous pardonnez, moi aussi je pardonne. Et si j’ai quelque chose à pardonner, je pardonne face au Christ à cause de vous,	10 But anyone whom you have forgiven of anything, I also forgive. And then, too, anyone I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, it was done in the person of Christ for your sakes,
11 pour ne pas faire le jeu de Satan. Car nous savons bien où il veut en venir.	11 so that we would not be circumvented by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his intentions.
12 Comme je disais, je suis allé à Troas pour y donner l’Évangile du Christ, et grâce au Seigneur je fus capable de le faire.	12 And when I had arrived at Troas, because of the Gospel of Christ, and a door had opened to me in the Lord,
13 Mais mon esprit ne pouvait rester en paix car je n’y avais pas retrouvé Tite, mon frère. Aussi, je les ai laissés et je suis parti pour la Macédoine.	13 I had no rest within my spirit, because I was not able to find Titus, my brother. So, saying goodbye to them, I set out for Macedonia.
14 Remercions Dieu qui nous entraîne toujours dans la marche victorieuse du Christ et se sert de nous pour répandre en tous lieux le parfum de sa connaissance!	14 But thanks be to God, who always brings triumph to us in Christ Jesus, and who manifests the fragrance of his knowledge through us in every place.
15 Si le Christ est la victime, nous sommes l’odeur du sacrifice qui monte vers Dieu. Nous le sommes pour ceux qui sont sauvés comme pour ceux qui se perdent.	15 For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ for God, both with those who are being saved and with those who are perishing.
16 Pour les uns c’est une odeur de mort qui mène à la mort; pour les autres c’est le parfum de la vie, qui conduit à la vie. Mais qui est à la hauteur d’un tel rôle?	16 To the one, certainly, the fragrance is of death unto death. But to the other, the fragrance is of life unto life. And concerning these things, who is so suitable?
17 On trouve facilement des revendeurs de la Parole de Dieu, mais chez nous tout est sincère: tout vient de Dieu et tout est dit face à lui, dans le Christ.	17 For we are not like many others, adulterating the Word of God. But instead, we speak with sincerity: from God, before God, and in Christ.
