| 1 Yahvé dit à Moïse: | 1 The LORD said to Moses, |
| 2 “Ordonne ceci aux enfants d’Israël: Vous renverrez du camp les lépreux, ceux qui ont un écoulement et ceux qui se sont rendus impurs en touchant un cadavre. | 2 "Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one having a discharge, and every one that is unclean through contact with the dead; |
| 3 Homme ou femme, vous les enverrez à l’extérieur du camp, pour qu’ils ne rendent pas impur le camp où j’habite au milieu de vous.” | 3 you shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell." |
| 4 C’est ce que firent les Israélites. Ils renvoyèrent les impurs à l’extérieur du camp comme Yahvé l’avait dit à Moïse. | 4 And the people of Israel did so, and drove them outside the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so the people of Israel did. |
| 5 Yahvé parla à Moïse: | 5 And the LORD said to Moses, |
| 6 “Voici ce que tu diras aux Israélites: Quand un homme ou une femme aura péché envers son prochain, qu’il aura commis une infidélité envers Yahvé, cette personne sera coupable. | 6 "Say to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that men commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is guilty, |
| 7 Elle reconnaîtra alors le péché qu’elle a commis. Puis elle rendra toute la somme pour laquelle elle s’est rendue coupable, et elle y ajoutera un cinquième qu’elle donnera à celui envers qui elle a péché. | 7 he shall confess his sin which he has committed; and he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it, and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. |
| 8 S’il n’y a personne à qui restituer l’objet pour lequel on s’est rendu coupable, cet objet appartiendra à Yahvé. Le coupable le donnera aux prêtres en plus du bélier pour le sacrifice de réparation, que l’on offrira pour lui. | 8 But if the man has no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him. |
| 9 Car sur toutes les choses saintes que les Israélites offrent au prêtre, celui-ci a droit au prélèvement. | 9 And every offering, all the holy things of the people of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his; |
| 10 Ce que chacun offre lui appartient, mais s’il le remet au prêtre, cela appartient à ce dernier.” | 10 and every man's holy things shall be his; whatever any man gives to the priest shall be his." |
| 11 Yahvé dit à Moïse: | 11 And the LORD said to Moses, |
| 12 “Voici ce que tu diras aux Israélites pour le cas suivant: Un homme a une femme qui se conduit mal et qui lui est infidèle. | 12 "Say to the people of Israel, If any man's wife goes astray and acts unfaithfully against him, |
| 13 Un autre homme a eu des rapports sexuels avec elle en cachette du mari, et elle-même s’est cachée pour accomplir cet acte impur de sorte qu’il n’y a pas de témoin contre elle: personne ne l’a vue. | 13 if a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, since she was not taken in the act; |
| 14 Il est possible qu’un esprit de jalousie soit entré dans cet homme et qu’il soupçonne sa femme parce que, de fait, elle s’est rendue impure. Mais il est possible aussi qu’un esprit de jalousie se soit emparé de lui et qu’il soupçonne sa femme alors qu’elle est innocente. | 14 and if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself; |
| 15 Dans ces cas, l’homme conduira sa femme vers le prêtre et apportera l’offrande réglementaire: un dixième de mesure de farine d’orge qui ne sera pas pétrie à l’huile et sur laquelle on ne mettra pas d’encens car c’est l’offrande du soupçon, une offrande pour faire ressortir une faute. | 15 then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a cereal offering of jealousy, a cereal offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance. |
| 16 Le prêtre fera approcher la femme devant Yahvé. | 16 "And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD; |
| 17 Il prendra de l’eau consacrée dans un vase d’argile, il ramassera de la poussière du sol de la Demeure et la mettra dans l’eau. | 17 and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. |
| 18 Le prêtre placera alors la femme devant Yahvé et il dénouera les cheveux de sa tête, puis il mettra dans ses mains l’offrande pour faire ressortir la faute, l’offrande du soupçon. Tenant dans ses mains les eaux d’amertume qui portent la malédiction, | 18 And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and unbind the hair of the woman's head, and place in her hands the cereal offering of remembrance, which is the cereal offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse. |
| 19 le prêtre passera à la formule solennelle de malédiction. Il dira à la femme: Si aucun homme n’a couché avec toi, si tu ne t’es pas mal conduite avec un autre que ton mari, que ces eaux d’amertume qui portent la malédiction montrent ton innocence. | 19 Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, 'If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness, while you were under your husband's authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. |
| 20 Mais si tu t’es dévoyée avec un autre que ton mari, si tu es devenue impure en ayant des rapports sexuels avec un autre que ton mari… | 20 But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, |
| 21 Et le prêtre continuera avec la formule de malédiction: Que Yahvé fasse de toi une malédiction et une abomination au milieu de ton peuple. Qu’il fasse dépérir tes flancs et enfler ton ventre. | 21 then' (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) 'the LORD make you an execration and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your body swell; |
| 22 Que ces eaux t’apportent la malédiction, qu’elles entrent dans tes entrailles, qu’elles fassent enfler ton ventre et dépérir tes flancs. Et la femme répondra: Amen! Amen! | 22 may this water that brings the curse pass into your bowels and make your body swell and your thigh fall away.' And the woman shall say, 'Amen, Amen.' |
| 23 Alors le prêtre écrira ces imprécations sur une feuille et il les lavera dans les eaux d’amertume | 23 "Then the priest shall write these curses in a book, and wash them off into the water of bitterness; |
| 24 de façon à faire boire à la femme ces eaux chargées de malédiction. | 24 and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. |
| 25 Puis le prêtre prendra dans la main de la femme l’offrande du soupçon, il la balancera devant Yahvé et la portera à l’autel. | 25 And the priest shall take the cereal offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the cereal offering before the LORD and bring it to the altar; |
| 26 Il prendra de même une poignée de l’offrande et la fera fumer sur l’autel, après quoi il fera boire à la femme les eaux d’amertume. | 26 and the priest shall take a handful of the cereal offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. |
| 27 Si elle s’est rendue impure en trompant son mari, ces eaux qu’elle a bues deviendront en elle source d’amertume et de malédiction; son ventre enflera et ses flancs dépériront: cette femme deviendra une maudite au milieu de son peuple. | 27 And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has acted unfaithfully against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become an execration among her people. |
| 28 Mais si la femme ne s’est pas rendue impure, si elle a gardé sa pureté, elle ne souffrira pas de mal et sera féconde. | 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children. |
| 29 Telle est la loi du soupçon pour la femme qui se conduit mal avec un autre que son mari et qui se rend impure, | 29 "This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, though under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, |
| 30 et pour l’homme sur qui passe un esprit de jalousie de sorte qu’il soupçonne sa femme. Il fera venir sa femme devant Yahvé et le prêtre appliquera la totalité de cette loi. | 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man and he is jealous of his wife; then he shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. |
| 31 Ainsi l’homme sera sans reproches et la femme portera son péché.” | 31 The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity." |
