1 Toute la communauté des Israélites arriva le premier mois au désert de Tsin. Le peuple s’établit à Qadesh, c’est là que Miryam mourut et qu’elle fut enterrée.	1 The Israelites, the whole community, arrived in the first month at the desert of Zin. The people settledat Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
2 Il n’y avait pas d’eau pour la communauté, et les Israélites s’en prirent à Moïse et à Aaron.	2 There was no water for the community, so they banded together against Moses and Aaron.
3 Ils cherchèrent querelle à Moïse et lui dirent: “Pourquoi ne sommes-nous pas morts devant Yahvé comme nos frères?	3 The people laid the blame on Moses. 'We would rather have died', they said, 'as our brothers diedbefore Yahweh!
4 Pourquoi avez-vous amené la communauté de Yahvé dans ce désert pour nous y faire mourir, nous et nos bêtes?	4 Why have you brought Yahweh's community into this desert, for us and our livestock to die here?
5 Vous nous avez fait sortir d’Égypte pour nous amener dans cet endroit impossible! Pas un endroit pour semer ni figuier, ni vigne, ni grenadier et pas même d’eau à boire!”	5 Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place? It is a place unfit forsowing, it has no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, and there is not even water to drink!'
6 Moïse et Aaron s’échappèrent du milieu de la communauté et se présentèrent à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous. Là ils tombèrent la face contre terre, et la Gloire de Yahvé leur apparut.	6 Leaving the assembly, Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They threwthemselves on their faces, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them.
7 Yahvé dit à Moïse:	7 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
8 “Prends ta baguette et, avec Aaron ton frère, réunis toute la communauté. Et sous les yeux de tous, vous direz au rocher de donner son eau. Tu feras jaillir pour eux l’eau du rocher et tu donneras à boire à la communauté et à son bétail.”	8 'Take the branch and call the community together, you and your brother Aaron. Then, in full view ofthem, order this rock to release its water. You wil release water from the rock for them and provide drink for thecommunity and their livestock.'
9 Moïse retira la baguette de devant Yahvé comme il en avait reçu l’ordre.	9 Moses took up the branch from before Yahweh, as he had directed him.
10 Puis Moïse et Aaron réunirent la communauté devant le rocher et Moïse dit: “Écoutez donc, rebelles! Ferons-nous jaillir pour vous de l’eau de ce rocher?”	10 Moses and Aaron then cal ed the assembly together in front of the rock. He then said to them,'Listen now, you rebels. Shall we make water gush from this rock for you?'
11 Moïse leva la main et par deux fois frappa le rocher avec sa baguette. Alors les eaux jaillirent en abondance: la communauté et son bétail eurent à boire.	11 Moses then raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the branch; water gushed out inabundance, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 Mais Yahvé dit à Moïse et à Aaron: “Vous n’avez pas eu confiance en moi! Puisque vous ne m’avez pas rendu gloire devant les Israélites, vous ne ferez pas entrer cette communauté dans le pays que je lui donne.”	12 Yahweh then said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe that I could assert my holinessbefore the Israelites' eyes, you wil not lead this assembly into the country which I am giving them.'
13 C’était aux eaux de Mériba; les Israélites protestèrent contre Yahvé, et il leur manifesta sa sainteté.	13 These were the Waters of Meribah, where the Israelites laid the blame on Yahweh and where, bytheir means, he asserted his holiness.
14 De Qadesh, Moïse envoya dire au roi d’Édom: “Ainsi parle ton frère Israël. Tu connais toutes les difficultés que nous avons rencontrées.	14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh: 'To the king of Edom. Your brother Israel says this: You areaware of the great hardships we have encountered.
15 Nos pères sont descendus en Égypte et nous y sommes restés de nombreux jours, mais les Égyptiens nous ont maltraités, nous et nos pères.	15 Our ancestors went down to Egypt and there we stayed for a long time. But the Egyptians treated usbadly, as they had our ancestors.
16 Nous avons alors crié vers Yahvé et il a entendu notre appel: il a envoyé un ange qui nous a fait sortir d’Égypte. “Maintenant nous sommes à Qadesh, l’oasis à la frontière de ton pays.	16 When we appealed to Yahweh, he heard our cry and, sending an angel, brought us out of Egypt,and here we are, now, at Kadesh, a town on the borders of your territory.
17 Laisse-nous traverser ton pays; nous ne traverserons ni tes champs, ni tes vignes, et nous ne boirons pas l’eau de tes puits. Nous suivrons la route royale sans nous écarter ni à droite, ni à gauche, jusqu’au jour où nous aurons traversé ton pays.”	17 We ask permission to pass through your country. We shall not go through the fields or vineyards; weshall not drink the water from the wel s; we shal keep to the king's highway without turning to right or left until wehave passed through your territory.'
18 Édom répondit: “Tu ne passeras pas chez moi, sinon j’irai à ta rencontre, l’épée à la main.”	18 To which, Edom replied, 'You wil not pass through my country; if you do, I shal oppose you by forceof arms.'
19 Les Israélites lui dirent: “Nous suivrons la route et, si nous buvons de ton eau, nous et nos troupeaux, nous en paierons le prix. Nous ne laisserons que la trace de nos pieds.”	19 To which the Israelites replied, 'We shal keep to the high road; if I and my flocks drink any of yourwater, I am wil ing to pay for it. Al I am asking is to pass through on foot.'
20 Édom répondit: “Tu ne passeras pas!” Et il s’avança vers Israël avec un peuple énorme et une grande armée.	20 Edom replied: 'You shal not pass,' and Edom opposed them in great numbers and great force.
21 C’est ainsi qu’Édom interdit à Israël de traverser son territoire et Israël dut faire le détour.	21 At Edom's refusal to grant Israel passage through his territory, Israel turned away.
22 Toute la communauté des Israélites partit de Qadesh et arriva à Hor-la-Montagne.	22 They set out from Kadesh, and the Israelites, the whole community, came to Mount Hor.
23 Yahvé dit à Moïse et à Aaron quand ils étaient à Hor-la-Montagne, à la frontière du pays d’Édom:	23 Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the frontier of Edom, and said,
24 “Aaron va être réuni à ses pères, il n’entrera pas dans le pays que je donne aux Israélites, car vous avez été rebelles à mes ordres aux eaux de Mériba.	24 'Aaron is to be gathered to his people; he will not enter the country which I have given to theIsraelites, since you both disobeyed my order at the Waters of Meribah.
25 Prends donc avec toi Aaron et son fils Éléazar, et faites l’ascension de la montagne de Hor.	25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor.
26 Là tu retireras ses habits à Aaron et tu les mettras à Éléazar son fils, puis Aaron ira rejoindre ses pères, c’est là qu’il mourra.”	26 Then take Aaron's robes off him and dress his son Eleazar in them. Aaron wil then be gathered tohis people; that is where he will die.'
27 Moïse fit ce que Yahvé avait ordonné. Ils gravirent la montagne de Hor sous les yeux de toute la communauté.	27 Moses did as Yahweh ordered. With the whole community watching, they went up Mount Hor.
28 Moïse enleva ses habits à Aaron et il en habilla son fils Éléazar. Puis Aaron mourut sur le haut de la montagne et Moïse redescendit de la montagne avec Éléazar.	28 Moses took Aaron's robes off him and dressed his son Eleazar in them, and there Aaron died, onthe mountain-top. Moses and Eleazar then came back down the mountain.
29 Toute la communauté vit qu’Aaron était mort et tout le peuple d’Israël pleura Aaron durant 30 jours.	29 The whole community saw that Aaron had died, and for thirty days the whole House of Israelmourned for Aaron.
