| 1 Nabukodonozor, roi de Babylone, combattait contre Jérusalem et contre toutes les villes de Juda avec toute son armée, les royaumes de la terre et tous les peuples soumis à son autorité. Une parole de Yahvé fut alors adressée à Jérémie: | 1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: |
| 2 “Va dire à Sédécias, roi de Juda, cette parole de Yahvé Dieu d’Israël: Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone et il y mettra le feu. | 2 "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. |
| 3 Quant à toi, tu n’échapperas pas à sa main. Tu seras arrêté et remis entre ses mains, tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, tu lui parleras face à face et tu iras à Babylone. | 3 You shall not escape from his hand, but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand; you shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face; and you shall go to Babylon.' |
| 4 Cependant, écoute la parole de Yahvé, Sédécias, roi de Juda. Voici ce que dit Yahvé à ton sujet: On ne te tuera pas, | 4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the LORD concerning you: 'You shall not die by the sword. |
| 5 mais tu mourras en paix et on fera fumer pour toi des parfums, comme on l’a fait pour tes pères, les rois qui sont venus avant toi. On fera sur toi la lamentation: “Hélas, seigneur…” C’est moi qui te le dis - parole de Yahvé.” | 5 You shall die in peace. And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so men shall burn spices for you and lament for you, saying, "Alas, lord!"' For I have spoken the word, says the LORD." |
| 6 C’est à Jérusalem que le prophète Jérémie prononça toutes ces paroles devant Sédécias, roi de Juda, | 6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, |
| 7 quand l’armée du roi de Babylone assiégeait Jérusalem et toutes les villes de Juda qui résistaient encore, c’est-à-dire Lakish et Azéka qui comptaient parmi les villes fortifiées de Juda. | 7 when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, Lachish and Azekah; for these were the only fortified cities of Judah that remained. |
| 8 Voici une parole de Yahvé qui fut adressée à Jérémie. Le roi Sédécias, d’accord avec le peuple de Jérusalem, avait proclamé solennellement une libération. | 8 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to make a proclamation of liberty to them, |
| 9 Chacun devait rendre la liberté à ses esclaves hébreux, hommes ou femmes, personne ne devait plus garder en esclavage un frère judéen. | 9 that every one should set free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, so that no one should enslave a Jew, his brother. |
| 10 Tous les chefs et tout le peuple avaient pris cet engagement: chacun rendrait la liberté à son esclave ou à sa servante, et ne les garderait plus comme esclaves; ainsi firent-ils, ils les renvoyèrent. | 10 And they obeyed, all the princes and all the people who had entered into the covenant that every one would set free his slave, male or female, so that they would not be enslaved again; they obeyed and set them free. |
| 11 Mais après cela ils changèrent d’avis, ils firent revenir les esclaves et les servantes à qui ils avaient rendu la liberté et, de nouveau, les traitèrent en esclaves. | 11 But afterward they turned around and took back the male and female slaves they had set free, and brought them into subjection as slaves. |
| 12 Une parole de Yahvé fut alors adressée à Jérémie: | 12 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
| 13 Voici ce que dit Yahvé Dieu d’Israël: J’ai fait une alliance avec vos pères le jour où je les ai fait sortir d’Égypte, du pays de l’esclavage. Je leur ai dit: | 13 "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, |
| 14 Après sept ans, chacun d’entre vous renverra son frère hébreu qui s’est vendu à lui et qui l’a servi pendant six ans. Vous le renverrez de chez vous, libre. Mais vos pères ne m’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille. | 14 'At the end of six years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; you must set him free from your service.' But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me. |
| 15 Vous veniez tout juste de vous convertir et vous aviez fait ce qui est juste à mes yeux. Chacun de vous avait proclamé la libération de son prochain, et vous aviez pris un engagement en ma présence, dans le temple que mon Nom a rendu saint. | 15 You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name; |
| 16 Mais ensuite vous avez déshonoré mon Nom: vous avez changé d’avis et chacun de vous a fait revenir l’esclave ou la servante à qui il avait rendu la liberté. Hommes ou femmes, vous les avez repris comme esclaves. | 16 but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. |
| 17 C’est pourquoi, voici ce que dit Yahvé: Vous ne m’avez pas écouté lorsque je parlais de libérer votre frère, votre prochain. Eh bien maintenant - parole de Yahvé - je libère contre vous l’épée, la peste et la famine; je ferai de vous un objet d’épouvante pour tous les royaumes de la terre. | 17 Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, says the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. |
| 18 Les hommes qui ont trahi mon alliance et qui n’ont pas respecté les termes de cette alliance qu’ils avaient faite devant moi, je les rendrai semblables au veau qu’ils ont coupé en deux et entre les morceaux duquel ils sont passés pour conclure cette alliance. | 18 And the men who transgressed my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant which they made before me, I will make like the calf which they cut in two and passed between its parts-- |
| 19 Je parle des chefs de Juda et de Jérusalem, des officiers et des prêtres, et de tous les propriétaires qui sont passés entre les morceaux du veau. | 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf; |
| 20 Je les livrerai à leurs ennemis; leur cadavre sera la nourriture des oiseaux des cieux et des bêtes de la terre. | 20 and I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives. Their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. |
| 21 Je livrerai Sédécias roi de Juda et les chefs, à leurs ennemis, à cette armée du roi de Babylone qui s’est éloignée de vous. | 21 And Zedekiah king of Judah, and his princes I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon which has withdrawn from you. |
| 22 Car je viens de donner un ordre - oracle de Yahvé. Je les ramène contre cette ville pour qu’ils combattent contre elle. Ils la prendront et la livreront aux flammes. Quant aux villes de Juda, elles resteront à l’état de ruines, désertes. | 22 Behold, I will command, says the LORD, and will bring them back to this city; and they will fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without inhabitant." |
