1 Pour les impies par contre, une fureur impitoyable les frappa jusqu’au bout, car Dieu savait d’avance ce qu’ils feraient:	1 But the impious, all the way to the very end, were overcome by anger without mercy. Indeed, he knew beforehand even their future.
2 après avoir autorisé ton peuple à s’en aller, et l’y avoir même poussé, ils changèrent d’avis et se mirent à sa poursuite.	2 Yet, seeing that they might have repented, so that they would be led by him and be sent forth with great concern, the just sought the impious, while regretting their deeds.
3 Ils n’avaient pas fini de pleurer les morts et de se lamenter sur les tombes lorsqu’ils prirent la folle décision de poursuivre comme des fugitifs ceux qu’ils avaient supplié de partir.	3 For, while the just were still holding grief in their hands and weeping at the tombs of the dead, these others took upon themselves another senseless thought, and they cast out the legislators and pursued them as if they were fugitives.
4 Une juste fatalité les poussa à cette mesure extrême et leur fit oublier tout ce qui était déjà arrivé: il fallait que de nouveaux tourments mettent le comble à leur châtiment.	4 For a fitting necessity was leading them to this end, and they were losing the remembrance of those things which had happened, so that what was lacking in the sufferings of the conflict might be completed by the punishment,
5 Ton peuple allait faire l’expérience d’un voyage incroyable, mais eux devaient connaître une mort peu commune.	5 and so that your people, indeed, might wonderfully pass through, but these others might find a new death.
6 Sur ton ordre toute la création, avec ses propriétés naturelles, fut renouvelée d’en haut afin de protéger tes enfants.	6 For every creature according to its kind was fashioned again as from the beginning, diligently serving your teachings, so that your children would be preserved unharmed.
7 On vit une nuée couvrir le camp de son ombre et la terre sèche apparaître au milieu de l’eau; un passage sûr s’ouvrit dans la mer Rouge, une plaine verdoyante remplaça les flots impétueux,	7 For a cloud overshadowed their camp, and where water was before, dry land appeared, and in the Red Sea, a way without hindrance, and out of the great deep, a level field sprung up,
8 et tout le peuple y passa. Protégé par ta main, il fut témoin de ces prodiges étonnants.	8 through which the whole nation passed, protected by your hand, seeing your miracles and wonders.
9 Ils folâtraient comme des chevaux au pâturage, ils gambadaient comme des agneaux, ils te louaient, Seigneur, car tu les avais délivrés.	9 For they consumed food like horses, and they leapt about like lambs, praising you, O Lord, who had freed them.
10 Ils pouvaient se rappeler ce qu’ils avaient vu dans le pays de leur exil, comment le sol s’était couvert, non pas d’animaux mais de moustiques, et comment le fleuve avait rejeté, non pas des poissons, mais d’innombrables grenouilles.	10 For they were still mindful of those things which had happened during the time of their sojourn, how, instead cattle, the earth brought forth flies, and instead of fish, the river cast up a multitude of frogs.
11 Plus tard, ils virent encore des oiseaux naître d’une nouvelle façon, lorsque la faim les pressait et qu’ils demandaient une nourriture plus substantielle;	11 And, lastly, they saw a new kind of bird, when, being led by their desire, they demanded a feast of meat.
12 des cailles sortirent de la mer pour subvenir à leurs besoins.	12 For, to console their loss, the quail came up to them from the sea, and yet troubles overcame the sinners, though they were not without the evidence of what had happened before by the power of lightning, for they suffered justly according to their own wickedness.
13 Les autres, les pécheurs, avaient été avertis par de violents orages, avant que les châtiments ne s’abattent sur eux. Ils étaient punis en toute justice pour leur propre méchanceté, car ils avaient montré une haine cruelle envers des étrangers.	13 And indeed, they set up a more detestable inhospitality. Certainly, some have refused to receive unknown foreigners, but these others were drafting good guests into servitude,
14 Ailleurs on avait refusé d’accueillir des inconnus, mais eux avaient réduit en servitude un peuple bienfaisant installé chez eux.	14 and not only foreigners, but also those who had been under their care, because they were reluctantly sheltering the outsiders.
15 Ceux qui avaient odieusement reçu des étrangers devaient être punis,	15 Yet whoever had sheltered them with gladness, by making use of the very same justice, they afflicted with the most severe sorrow.
16 mais eux, qui avaient accueilli nos pères avec des fêtes, ils les avaient ensuite accablés de terribles corvées après les avoir traités en égaux!	16 Yet they were struck with blindness, like someone brought before the gates of justice, so that they were suddenly covered with darkness, and each one was left searching for the threshold of his front door.
17 Aussi furent-ils frappés d’aveuglement, comme il était arrivé aux habitants de Sodome devant la porte de Lot, le juste: ils s’étaient retrouvés dans le noir et chacun allait à tâtons, cherchant sa propre porte.	17 For the elements in themselves are in the process of being changed, just as when the sound of a musical instrument is being altered in quality, yet each one keeps its own sound, from where it is considered to be and according to its fixed appearance.
18 C’est ainsi que les différents éléments du monde interchangeaient leurs propriétés, tout comme sur la cithare l’alternance des sons change le rythme, chaque note gardant toutefois sa tonalité propre. Et, si l’on examine les faits, c’est bien ce qui arrivait.	18 For the countryside was transformed by water, and things which were swimming, crossed over the land.
19 Ce qui vit sur terre s’adaptait à l’eau, ce qui est fait pour l’eau devenait terrestre.	19 Fire prevailed in the midst of water, beyond its own power, and the water forgot its quenching nature.
20 Le feu brûlait plus fort au contact de l’eau, et celle-ci oubliait de l’éteindre.	20 On the other hand, the flames did not trouble the bodies of the mortal animals walking around, nor did they melt that good food, which is as easily melted as ice. For in all things, O Lord, you magnified your people, and honored them, and did not despise them, but at every time and in every place, you assisted them.
21 Les flammes ne brûlaient pas les insectes fragiles qui les traversaient; elles ne faisaient pas fondre la manne, cette nourriture divine qui aurait dû se liquéfier, comme le givre, en un instant.
22 Oui, Seigneur, de mille façons tu as exalté et glorifié ton peuple! Jamais tu ne l’as oublié, mais tu l’as assisté toujours et partout!
