| 1 Les Israélites partirent d’Élim. Ils arrivèrent au désert de Sin, entre Élim et le Sinaï, le quinzième jour du deuxième mois après leur sortie d’Égypte. | 1 They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. |
| 2 Toute la communauté des Israélites murmura contre Moïse et Aaron dans le désert. | 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, |
| 3 Les Israélites leur dirent: “Pourquoi Yahvé ne nous a-t-il pas fait mourir au pays d’Égypte? Là nous pouvions nous asseoir devant des marmites de viande et nous mangions du pain comme nous voulions; mais vous nous avez fait aller à ce désert pour y faire mourir de faim toute cette foule.” | 3 and said to them, "Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger." |
| 4 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Je vais vous faire pleuvoir du pain du haut du ciel. Que le peuple sorte et ramasse chaque jour ce dont il a besoin: je vais bien voir s’il marche ou non selon ma Loi. | 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not. |
| 5 Le sixième jour ils ramasseront et prépareront le double de ce qu’ils ramassent les autres jours.” | 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily." |
| 6 Moïse et Aaron dirent à tous les Israélites: “Ce soir vous saurez que c’est Yahvé qui vous a fait sortir d’Égypte, | 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, "At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, |
| 7 et demain matin vous verrez la Gloire de Yahvé, car il vous a entendus réclamer contre lui. Vos plaintes n’étaient pas contre nous: nous autres, qui sommes-nous?” | 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your murmurings against the LORD. For what are we, that you murmur against us?" |
| 8 Moïse leur dit: “Ce soir Yahvé vous donnera de la viande à manger, et demain matin du pain, car Yahvé a entendu vos murmures contre lui. Nous autres, que sommes-nous? Ce n’est pas contre nous que vous murmurez, mais bien contre Yahvé.” | 8 And Moses said, "When the LORD gives you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your murmurings which you murmur against him--what are we? Your murmurings are not against us but against the LORD." |
| 9 Moïse dit à Aaron: “Voici ce que tu diras à toute la communauté des Israélites: Approchez-vous de Yahvé, car il a entendu vos murmures.” | 9 And Moses said to Aaron, "Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, 'Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your murmurings.'" |
| 10 Or, pendant qu’Aaron parlait à toute la communauté des Israélites, ils se tournèrent vers le désert et voici que la Gloire de Yahvé apparut dans la nuée. | 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. |
| 11 Yahvé s’adressa à Moïse et lui dit: | 11 And the LORD said to Moses, |
| 12 “J’ai entendu les murmures des Israélites, voici donc ce que tu leur diras: À la tombée du jour vous mangerez de la viande et au matin vous aurez votre content de pain. Alors vous saurez que je suis Yahvé, votre Dieu.” | 12 "I have heard the murmurings of the people of Israel; say to them, 'At twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'" |
| 13 Ce même soir, des cailles montèrent et couvrirent le camp. Et le matin, il y eut une couche de rosée autour du camp. | 13 In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning dew lay round about the camp. |
| 14 Lorsque la couche de rosée se leva, voici que la surface du désert était couverte d’une croûte, pas plus épaisse que le givre sur la terre. | 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as hoarfrost on the ground. |
| 15 Quand les Israélites la virent, ils se dirent: “Manhou? (“Qu’est-ce que c’est?”), car ils ne savaient pas ce que c’était. Alors Moïse leur dit: “C’est le pain que Yahvé vous donne en nourriture. | 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. |
| 16 “Et voici l’ordre de Yahvé: Ramassez-en selon ce que chacun peut manger, une mesure par personne selon le nombre des personnes. Chacun en prendra pour tous ceux qui vivent sous sa tente.” | 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Gather of it, every man of you, as much as he can eat; you shall take an omer apiece, according to the number of the persons whom each of you has in his tent.'" |
| 17 Les Israélites firent donc ainsi. Ils en ramassèrent, l’un plus, l’autre moins. | 17 And the people of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less. |
| 18 Mais quand on le mesura avec une mesure, pour celui qui avait ramassé beaucoup, rien ne débordait, et pour celui qui avait ramassé moins, la mesure était pleine. Chacun ramassait donc sa ration. | 18 But when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat. |
| 19 Moïse leur dit encore: “Que personne n’en laisse jusqu’au matin.” | 19 And Moses said to them, "Let no man leave any of it till the morning." |
| 20 Mais on n’écouta pas Moïse et certains en gardèrent jusqu’au matin. Or voilà que les vers s’y étaient mis, c’était immangeable. Alors Moïse se mit en colère contre eux. | 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. |
| 21 Ils en ramassaient chaque matin, chacun sa ration, et dès que le soleil chauffait la manne fondait. | 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. |
| 22 Le sixième jour ils ramassèrent le double de pain: deux mesures par personne. Tous les princes de la communauté vinrent le dire à Moïse. | 22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers apiece; and when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, |
| 23 Il leur répondit: “Voici ce qu’a dit Yahvé: Demain est un sabbat, un saint repos en l’honneur de Yahvé. Ce que vous devez cuire, cuisez-le maintenant, et ce que vous devez faire bouillir, faites-le bouillir maintenant. Mais tout ce qui restera, vous le garderez pour demain.” | 23 he said to them, "This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay by to be kept till the morning.'" |
| 24 Ils en gardèrent donc jusqu’au matin selon l’ordre de Moïse, et rien ne se perdit: il n’y avait pas de vers dedans. | 24 So they laid it by till the morning, as Moses bade them; and it did not become foul, and there were no worms in it. |
| 25 Moïse dit: “Mangez-le aujourd’hui! Aujourd’hui, c’est un sabbat pour Yahvé, et vous n’en trouverez pas dehors. | 25 Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. |
| 26 Pendant six jours vous en ramasserez, mais le septième jour, le jour du sabbat, il n’y en aura pas.” | 26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is a sabbath, there will be none." |
| 27 En effet, le septième jour des gens sortirent pour en ramasser mais ils n’en trouvèrent pas. | 27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none. |
| 28 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Combien de temps encore refuserez-vous d’observer mes commandements et mes lois? | 28 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? |
| 29 Regardez! Yahvé vous a donné le jour du repos, c’est pour cela qu’il vous donne au sixième jour du pain pour deux jours. Restez donc chez vous et que personne ne sorte de chez lui le septième jour.” | 29 See! The LORD has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days; remain every man of you in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day." |
| 30 Le peuple se reposa donc le septième jour. | 30 So the people rested on the seventh day. |
| 31 La maison d’Israël appela cette nourriture: la manne. C’était comme une petite graine blanche et elle avait le goût d’une galette de miel. | 31 Now the house of Israel called its name manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. |
| 32 Moïse leur dit: “Voici une instruction de Yahvé: Prenez une pleine mesure de manne que vous garderez pour vos descendants. Ils pourront voir ainsi le pain que je vous ai fait manger au désert, lorsque je vous ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte.” | 32 And Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" |
| 33 Moïse dit à Aaron: “Prends un pot et verse dedans une pleine mesure de manne. Tu la déposeras devant Yahvé à l’intention de vos descendants.” | 33 And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations." |
| 34 Aaron la déposa devant l’Arche d’Alliance comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné à Moïse. | 34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony, to be kept. |
| 35 Les Israélites mangèrent la manne pendant quarante ans, jusqu’à leur arrivée dans un pays habité; ils mangèrent la manne jusqu’à leur arrivée en pays de Canaan. | 35 And the people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land; they ate the manna, till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. |
| 36 La mesure dont on se servait faisait à peu près quatre litres. | 36 (An omer is the tenth part of an ephah.) |
