1 Judith leur dit: “Écoutez-moi, frères, prenez cette tête et suspendez-la au créneau du rempart.	1 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me, my brothers. Take this head and hang it on the parapet of your wall.
2 Et lorsque le jour se lèvera, lorsque le soleil paraîtra sur la terre, que chacun prenne ses armes. Tous les hommes valides sortiront de la ville avec un chef à leur tête, comme si vous alliez descendre dans la plaine vers les avant-postes des Assyriens. Mais vous ne descendrez pas.	2 At daybreak, when the sun rises on the earth, let each of you seize his weapons, and let all the able-bodied men rush out of the city under command of a captain, as if about to go down into the plain against the advance guard of the Assyrians, but without going down.
3 Alors ils prendront leurs armes, ils iront au camp pour réveiller les généraux de l’armée d’Assyrie, et ceux-ci à leur tour courront vers la tente d’Holoferne. En ne le voyant pas, ils seront pris de panique et prendront la fuite devant vous.	3 They will seize their armor and hurry to their camp to awaken the generals of the Assyrian army. When they run to the tent of Holofernes and do not find him, panic will seize them, and they will flee before you.
4 Alors vous les poursuivrez, vous et tous ceux qui habitent sur le territoire d’Israël et vous les abattrez sur les chemins.	4 Then you and all the other inhabitants of the whole territory of Israel will pursue them and strike them down in their tracks.
5 “Mais pour commencer, appelez-moi Akior l’Ammonite, pour qu’il voie et reconnaisse celui qui a méprisé la maison d’Israël, celui qui l’avait envoyé au milieu de nous comme on envoie un homme à la mort.”	5 But before doing this, summon for me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and recognize the one who despised the house of Israel and sent him here to meet his death."
6 On partit donc chercher Akior chez Osias. Lorsqu’il fut là et qu’il vit la tête d’Holoferne que l’un des hommes de l’assemblée tenait à la main, il tomba la face contre terre, évanoui.	6 So they called Achior from the house of Uzziah. When he came and saw the head of Holofernes in the hand of one of the men in the assembly of the people, he fell forward in a faint.
7 On le releva; alors il se jeta aux pieds de Judith et se prosterna devant elle en disant: “Bénie sois-tu dans tous les foyers de Juda et parmi tous les peuples! Tous ceux qui entendront prononcer ton nom, seront frappés d’étonnement.	7 Then, after they lifted him up, he threw himself at the feet of Judith in homage, saying: "Blessed are you in every tent of Judah; and in every foreign nation, all who hear of you will be struck with terror.
8 Maintenant, dis-moi ce que tu as fait durant ces jours.” Et Judith lui raconta devant tout le peuple ce qu’elle avait fait, depuis le jour où elle était sortie jusqu’à ce moment où elle leur parlait.	8 But now, tell me all that you did during these days." So Judith told him, in the presence of the people, all that she had been doing from the day she left till the time she began speaking to them.
9 Quand elle eut cessé de parler, le peuple acclama à grands cris et fit entendre dans toute la ville des cris de joie.	9 When she finished her account, the people cheered loudly, and their city resounded with shouts of joy.
10 En voyant ce que le Dieu d’Israël avait fait, Akior crut fermement en Dieu et se fit circoncire; c’est ainsi qu’il est entré dans le peuple d’Israël.	10 Now Achior, seeing all that the God of Israel had done, believed firmly in him. He had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, and he has been united with the house of Israel to the present day.
11 Au lever du jour, on accrocha la tête d’Holoferne au rempart; tous les hommes prirent leurs armes et sortirent par groupes vers les pentes de la montagne.	11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the wall. Then all the Israelite men took up their arms and went to the slopes of the mountain.
12 Lorsque les Assyriens les aperçurent, ils partirent prévenir leurs chefs. Ceux-ci allèrent trouver les généraux et tous les officiers supérieurs.	12 When the Assyrians saw them, they notified their captains; these, in turn, went to the generals and division leaders and all their other commanders.
13 Eux se présentèrent à la tente d’Holoferne et dirent à celui qui était chargé de toutes ses affaires: “Réveille notre seigneur! Ce peuple d’esclaves est maintenant assez téméraire pour descendre et nous attaquer! Ils veulent vraiment se faire massacrer jusqu’au dernier.”	13 They came to the tent of Holofernes and said to the one in charge of all his things, "Waken our master, for the slaves have dared come down to give us battle, to their utter destruction."
14 Bagoas entra et frappa des mains à la porte de la tente, car il pensait qu’Holoferne dormait avec Judith.	14 Bagoas went in, and knocked at the entry of the tent, presuming that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 Mais comme personne ne semblait répondre, il écarta la tenture, entra dans la chambre à coucher et le trouva par terre, mort et décapité.	15 As no one answered, he parted the curtains, entered the bedroom, and found him lying on the floor, a headless corpse.
16 Il poussa un cri déchirant, il pleurait, gémissait, hurlait, déchirait ses vêtements.	16 He broke into a loud clamor of weeping, groaning, and howling, and rent his garments.
17 Puis il entra dans la tente où logeait Judith: elle n’était plus là. Alors il sortit comme un fou vers l’armée en criant:	17 Then he entered the tent where Judith had her quarters; and, not finding her, he rushed out to the troops and cried:
18 “Ces esclaves nous ont eus! Une seule femme de chez les Hébreux a couvert de honte la maison du roi Nabukodonozor! Holoferne est sur le sol, sans tête!”	18 "The slaves have duped us! A single Hebrew woman has brought disgrace on the house of King Nebuchadnezzar. Here is Holofernes headless on the ground!"
19 En entendant cela, les chefs de l’armée d’Assyrie déchirèrent leurs vêtements; ils en étaient si bouleversés qu’ils se lamentaient et poussaient de grands cris au milieu du camp!	19 When the commanders of the Assyrian army heard these words, they rent their tunics and were seized with consternation. Loud screaming and howling arose in the camp.
