1 En ce temps-là on fit la lecture du livre de Moïse devant le peuple. Or il y était écrit: - “L’Ammonite et le Moabite seront toujours exclus de l’assemblée de Dieu,	1 Now on that day, they read from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it, there was found written that the Ammonites and the Moabites must not enter the church of God, even for all time,
2 car ils ne sont pas venus à la rencontre des Israélites avec du pain et de l’eau. Au contraire ils ont payé Balaam pour les maudire, mais notre Dieu a changé la malédiction en bénédiction.”	2 because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, and they hired Balaam against them, to curse them. But our God turned the curse into a blessing.
3 Après avoir entendu la Loi, on mit à l’écart d’Israël tous les étrangers.	3 Now it happened that, when they had heard the law, they separated every foreigner from Israel.
4 Mais avant cela, le prêtre Élyachib avait été chargé des salles du Temple de notre Dieu. Comme il était de la famille de Tobiyas,	4 And Eliashib, the priest, was over this task; he had been given charge of the treasury of the house of our God, and he was a close relative of Tobiah.
5 il lui avait arrangé une vaste salle où l’on déposait autrefois les offrandes, l’encens, les objets sacrés, la dîme du blé, du vin et de l’huile, en un mot: la part des lévites, des chantres et des portiers, et ce qu’on en prélevait pour les prêtres.	5 Then he made for himself a large storeroom, and in that place, there was laid before him gifts, and frankincense, and vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, the portions of the Levites, and of the singing men, and of the gatekeepers, and the first-fruits of the priests.
6 En ce temps-là, j’étais absent de Jérusalem, car dans la trente-deuxième année du règne d’Artaxerxès, roi de Babylone, j’étais retourné auprès du roi. Mais au bout d’un certain temps, j’avais demandé au roi la permission	6 But during all this, I was not in Jerusalem, because in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, the king of Babylon, I went to the king, and at the end of some days, I petitioned the king.
7 de revenir à Jérusalem; c’est là que j’avais appris la mauvaise action qu’Élyachib avait faite pour plaire Tobiyas; il lui avait arrangé une salle dans la cour du Temple de Dieu.	7 And I went to Jerusalem, and I understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, such that he would make him a storeroom in the vestibules of the house of God.
8 Cela ne me plaisait pas du tout; j’ai donc jeté dans la cour, hors de la salle, tous les meubles de Tobiyas,	8 And it seemed to me very evil. And I cast the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside of the storeroom.
9 et j’ai ordonné de purifier les salles. Ensuite j’y ai remis les objets du Temple de Dieu, les offrandes et l’encens.	9 And I gave instructions, and they cleansed again the storeroom. And I brought back, into that place, the vessels of the house of God, the sacrifice, and the frankincense.
10 J’avais appris également que les parts des lévites ne rentraient plus et que les lévites et les chantres chargés du service, étaient retournés chacun vers leurs champs.	10 And I realized that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, and that each one had fled into his own region, from the Levites, and from the singing men, and from those who were ministering.
11 Aussi, j’ai secoué sévèrement les fonctionnaires. Je leur ai dit: - “Pourquoi le Temple de Dieu est-il à l’abandon?” J’ai rassemblé les lévites et je les ai rétablis dans leur fonction.	11 And I brought the case before the magistrates, and I said, “Why have we forsaken the house of God?” And I gathered them together, and I caused them to stand at their stations.
12 Alors tout le peuple de Juda a apporté de nouveau dans les magasins, la dîme du blé, du vin et de l’huile.	12 And all of Judah brought the tithes of the grain, and the wine, and the oil into the storehouses.
13 J’ai confié les magasins au prêtre Chélémyas, au scribe Sadoq, à Pédayas qui était lévite, et pour les aider je leur ai donné Hanan fils de Zakou, fils de Mattanyas. Ils avaient la réputation d’être honnêtes, et ils étaient chargés de la répartition à leurs frères.	13 And we appointed over the storehouses, Shelemiah, the priest, and Zadok, the scribe, and Pedaiah from the Levites, and next to them Hanan, the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah. For they had proven to be faithful. And so the portions of their brothers were entrusted to them.
14 Souviens-toi, mon Dieu, de ce que j’ai fait là, n’oublie pas les bonnes œuvres que j’ai accomplies pour le Temple de mon Dieu et pour ses lois.	14 Remember me, O my God, because of this, and may you not wipe away my acts of compassion, which I have done for the house of my God and for his ceremonies.
15 En ce temps-là j’ai vu, un jour de sabbat, des hommes qui foulaient des raisins dans le pressoir; d’autres transportaient des gerbes de blé, les chargeaient sur des ânes avec du vin, des raisins, des figues et toutes sortes d’autres fardeaux, et ils les apportaient à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat. Alors je les ai avertis de ne pas vendre ces produits.	15 In those days, I saw, in Judah, some who were treading the presses on the Sabbath, and who were carrying sheaves, and placing on donkeys burdens of wine, and of grapes, and of figs, and all manner of burdens, and who were bringing these into Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath. And I contended with them, so that they would sell on a day when it was permitted to sell.
16 À Jérusalem même, des Tyriens qui y habitaient faisaient venir du poisson et des produits de toutes sortes pour les vendre aux Judéens le jour du sabbat.	16 And some Tyrians dwelt within, who were bringing fish and all kinds of items for sale. And they were selling on the Sabbaths to the sons of Judah in Jerusalem.
17 J’ai secoué sévèrement les nobles de Juda, je leur ai dit: - “Quelle chose honteuse vous faites là! Vous profanez le jour du sabbat!	17 And I put the nobles of Judah under oath, and I said to them: “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?
18 Vos pères aussi ont fait cela et Dieu a fait venir tout ce malheur sur nous et sur cette ville. Et vous, vous augmentez encore la colère de Dieu contre Israël en profanant le sabbat!”	18 Did not our fathers do these things, and so our God brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? And you are adding more wrath upon Israel by violating the Sabbath!”
19 Aussi ai-je ordonné de fermer les battants des portes de Jérusalem dès qu’elles commençaient à être dans l’ombre au début du sabbat, et d’attendre la fin du sabbat pour les ouvrir de nouveau. J’ai placé aux portes quelques-uns de mes hommes pour voir qu’aucun fardeau n’entre en ville le jour du sabbat.	19 And it happened that, when the gates of Jerusalem had rested on the day of the Sabbath, I spoke, and they closed the gates. And I instructed that they should not open them until after the Sabbath. And I appointed some of my servants over the gates, so that no one would carry in a burden on the day of the Sabbath.
20 Une ou deux fois des marchands, des trafiquants de toute espèce, avaient passé la nuit hors de Jérusalem,	20 And so the merchants and those who sold all kinds of items remained just outside of Jerusalem, once and again.
21 mais je les ai prévenus: - “Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit près du rempart? Si vous recommencez, je vous arrête!” Du coup, ils ne sont plus revenus un jour de sabbat.	21 And I contended with them, and I said to them: “Why are you remaining just beyond the wall? If you do this again, I will send hands upon you.” And so, from that time, they no longer came on the Sabbath.
22 J’ai ordonné aux lévites de se purifier et de venir garder les portes afin de faire respecter le jour du sabbat. Pour cela aussi, souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu. Aie pitié de moi dans ta grande miséricorde.	22 I also spoke to the Levites, so that they would be cleansed, and would arrive to guard the gates and to sanctify the day of the Sabbath. Because of this also, O my God, remember me and spare me, in accord with the multitude of your mercies.
23 En ces jours-là encore, j’ai vu des Juifs qui avaient épousé des femmes d’Ashdod, des Ammonites ou des Moabites.	23 But also in those days, I saw some Jews taking wives from the Ashdodites, and the Ammonites, and the Moabites.
24 La moitié de leurs fils parlaient la langue d’Ashdod ou de tel ou tel peuple, et ne savaient pas le judéen.	24 And their sons spoke partly in the speech of Ashdod, and they did not know how to speak the Jewish language, and they were speaking according to the language of one people or another.
25 Je leur ai fait des reproches et je les ai maudits; j’en ai même frappé quelques-uns, je leur ai arraché les cheveux et au nom de Dieu je leur ai dit sévèrement: - “Vous ne donnerez plus vos filles à leurs fils et vous ne prendrez plus leurs filles pour vos fils ou pour vous.	25 And I put them under oath, and I cursed them. And I struck some of their men, and I shaved off their hair, and I made them swear to God that they would not give their daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for their sons, nor for themselves, saying:
26 C’est ainsi que Salomon, le roi d’Israël a péché. Il n’y avait pas de roi comme lui en aucun pays, il était aimé de son Dieu qui l’avait fait roi sur tout Israël; et pourtant ses femmes étrangères l’ont fait pécher.	26 “Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin in this kind of thing? And certainly, among many nations, there was no king similar to him, and he was beloved of his God, and God set him as king over all of Israel. And yet foreign women led even him into sin!
27 Voulez-vous qu’on dise de vous que vous avez commis la même faute et que vous avez été infidèles à notre Dieu en épousant des femmes étrangères?”	27 So how could we disobey and do all this great evil, so that we would transgress against our God, and take foreign wives?”
28 Un des fils de Yoyada fils d’Élyachib le grand prêtre, était gendre de Samballat le Horonite; je l’ai chassé loin de moi.	28 Now one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, was a son-in-law to Sanballat, a Horonite, and I made him flee from me.
29 N’oublie pas, mon Dieu, à quel point ils avaient discrédité le sacerdoce et ton alliance avec les prêtres et les lévites.	29 O Lord, my God, remember against those who defile the priesthood and the law of the priests and the Levites!
30 Je les ai purifiés de tout étranger; j’ai établi des règles pour les prêtres et les lévites, chacun dans son propre travail,	30 And so I cleansed them from all foreigners, and I established the orders of the priests and the Levites, each one in his ministry.
31 des règles également pour l’offrande du bois au temps fixé et pour les premiers fruits. Souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, et bénis-moi.	31 O my God, remember me also, for good, because of the offering of wood, at the appointed times, and because of the first-fruits. Amen.
