1 Yahvé envoya donc à David le prophète Nathan. Il entra et lui dit: “Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l’un était riche, l’autre était pauvre.	1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And when he had come to him, he said to him: “Two men were in one city: one wealthy, and the other poor.
2 Le riche avait beaucoup de petit et de gros bétail,	2 The wealthy man had very many sheep and oxen.
3 le pauvre n’avait qu’une seule brebis qu’il avait achetée. Il la nourrissait, elle grandissait à côté de lui avec ses fils, elle mangeait de son pain, buvait dans sa coupe et dormait sur son sein: elle était pour lui comme une fille.	3 But the poor man had nothing at all, except one little sheep, which he had bought and nourished. And she had grown up before him, together with his children, eating from his bread, and drinking from his cup, and sleeping in his bosom. And she was like a daughter to him.
4 “Un jour l’homme riche reçut une visite. Comme il ne voulait pas prendre sur son petit ou sur son gros bétail pour préparer un repas au voyageur qui lui arrivait, il vola la brebis du pauvre et la prépara pour son visiteur.”	4 But when a certain traveler had come to the wealthy man, neglecting to take from his own sheep and oxen, so that he might present a feast for that traveler, who had come to him, he took the sheep of the poor man, and he prepared a meal for the man who had come to him.”
5 David entra dans une grande colère contre cet homme et dit à Nathan: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, l’homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort.	5 Then David’s indignation was enraged exceedingly against that man, and he said to Nathan: “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this is a son of death.
6 Il remboursera quatre fois la brebis pour avoir commis une telle action et n’avoir pas eu de pitié.”	6 He shall restore the sheep fourfold, because he did this word, and he did not take pity.”
7 Alors Nathan dit à David: “Cet homme, c’est toi! “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: Je t’avais consacré comme roi d’Israël, je t’avais délivré de la main de Saül,	7 But Nathan said to David: “You are that man. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.
8 je t’avais donné la maison de ton seigneur et les femmes de ton seigneur, je t’avais donné la maison d’Israël et celle de Juda, et si ce n’était pas assez, j’aurais fait encore bien plus.	8 And I gave the house of your lord to you, and the wives of your lord into your bosom. And I gave the house of Israel and of Judah to you. And as if these things were small, I shall add much greater things to you.
9 Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé la parole de Yahvé? Pourquoi as-tu fait cette chose si mauvaise à ses yeux, de frapper par l’épée Urie le Hittite? Tu as pris pour toi sa femme, et lui, tu l’as tué par l’épée des Ammonites.	9 Therefore, why have you despised the word of the Lord, so that you did evil in my sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword. And you have taken his wife as a wife for yourself. And you have put him to death with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
10 Pour cela, l’épée désormais ne s’écartera plus de ta maison, parce que tu m’as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d’Urie le Hittite pour en faire ta propre femme.	10 For this reason, the sword shall not withdraw from your house, even perpetually, because you have despised me, and you have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite, so that she may be your wife.’
11 “Voici ce que dit Yahvé: De ta propre maison, je ferai venir sur toi le malheur, je prendrai tes femmes sous tes yeux, et je les donnerai à ton prochain, il couchera avec tes femmes à la vue du soleil.	11 And so, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up over you an evil from your own house. And I will take your wives away before your eyes, and I will give them to your neighbor. And he will sleep with your wives in the sight of this sun.
12 Toi, tu as agi dans le secret, mais moi, j’accomplirai cela à la face de tout Israël, à la face du soleil.”	12 For you acted secretly. But I will do this word in the sight of all of Israel, and in the sight of the sun.’ ”
13 David répondit à Nathan: “J’ai péché contre Yahvé!” Nathan dit alors à David: “Voici que Yahvé efface ton péché, tu ne mourras pas.	13 And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David: “The Lord has also taken away your sin. You shall not die.
14 Cependant, parce que tu as méprisé Yahvé dans cette affaire, le fils qui t’est né mourra.”	14 Yet truly, because you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, because of this word, the son who was born to you: dying he shall die.”
15 Dans le même temps où Nathan s’en retournait chez lui, Yahvé frappa l’enfant que la femme d’Urie avait donné à David: il tomba malade.	15 And Nathan returned to his own house. And the Lord struck the little one, whom the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and he was despaired of.
16 David supplia Dieu pour son garçon, il refusa toute nourriture et, quand il rentra chez lui, il dormit sur le sol.	16 And David begged the Lord on behalf of the little one. And David fasted strictly, and entering alone, he lay upon the ground.
17 Les anciens de sa maison insistèrent auprès de lui pour qu’il se lève, mais il refusa et ne prit aucune nourriture avec eux.	17 Then the elders of his house came, urging him to rise up from the ground. And he was not willing, nor would he eat a meal with them.
18 Le septième jour l’enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David n’osaient pas lui annoncer la nouvelle, ils se disaient: “Lorsque l’enfant était encore en vie, nous lui avons parlé et il refusait de nous entendre. Que fera-t-il lorsque nous lui annoncerons que l’enfant est mort?”	18 Then, on the seventh day, it happened that the infant died. And the servants of David were afraid to report to him that the little one had died. For they said: “Behold, when the child was still alive, we were speaking to him, but he would not listen to our voice. How much more will he afflict himself, if we tell him that the boy is dead?”
19 David s’aperçut que ses serviteurs chuchotaient entre eux: il comprit que l’enfant était mort et il dit à ses serviteurs: “L’enfant est donc mort?” Ils répondirent: “Oui, il est mort.”	19 But when David had seen his servants whispering, he realized that the infant had died. And he said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they responded to him, “He is dead.”
20 Alors David se leva, se baigna, se parfuma et changea de vêtements. Il entra dans la Maison de Yahvé où il se prosterna, puis il revint chez lui et demanda qu’on lui serve un repas: il mangea.	20 Therefore, David rose up from the ground. And he washed and anointed himself. And when he had changed his clothing, he entered the house of the Lord, and he worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and he asked them to place bread before him, and he ate.
21 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Que fais-tu là? Lorsque l’enfant était vivant, tu jeûnais, tu pleurais, et maintenant que l’enfant est mort, tu te lèves et tu manges.”	21 But his servants said to him: “What is this word that you have done? You fasted and were weeping, on behalf of the infant, while he was still alive. But when the boy was dead, you arose and ate bread.”
22 Il répondit: “Lorsque l’enfant était encore en vie, je jeûnais et je pleurais. Je me disais: Qui sait? Peut-être Yahvé aura-t-il pitié de moi et guérira-t-il l’enfant.	22 And he said: “While he was yet alive, I fasted and wept on behalf of the infant. For I said: Who knows if the Lord may perhaps give him to me, and let the infant live?
23 Mais s’il est mort, pourquoi jeûner? Est-ce que je peux le faire revenir? C’est moi qui m’en irai vers lui, lui ne reviendra pas vers moi.”	23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Would I be able to bring him back anymore? Instead, I will go to him. Yet truly, he will not return to me.”
24 David consola sa femme Bethsabée, il alla la voir et coucha avec elle. Elle conçut et enfanta un fils auquel elle donna le nom de Salomon. Yahvé aima cet enfant,	24 And David consoled his wife Bathsheba. And entering to her, he slept with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him.
25 il le fit savoir par le prophète Nathan qui le nomma Yédidya, comme Yahvé le demandait.	25 And he sent, by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name, Beloved of the Lord, because the Lord loved him.
26 Joab attaqua Rabba des Ammonites et s’empara de cette ville royale,	26 And then Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and he fought outside the royal city.
27 puis il envoya des messagers pour dire à David: “J’ai attaqué Rabba, je me suis même emparé de la ville basse.	27 And Joab sent messengers to David, saying: “I have struggled against Rabbah, and so the City of Waters will soon be seized.
28 Il est temps que tu rassembles le reste du peuple. Viens toi-même camper face à la ville et t’en emparer, ou sinon c’est moi qui vais la prendre et on l’appellera de mon nom.”	28 Now therefore, gather the remaining portion of the people together, and besiege the city and take it. Otherwise, when the city will have been laid waste by me, the victory will be ascribed to my name.”
29 David rassembla donc tout le peuple et partit pour Rabba; il attaqua la ville et s’en empara.	29 And so David gathered together all the people, and he set out against Rabbah. And after he had fought, he seized it.
30 Il enleva au dieu Milkom sa couronne qui pesait un talent d’or; elle portait une pierre précieuse qui se retrouva bientôt sur la tête de David. Il emporta un énorme butin.	30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, having the most precious gems. And it was placed upon the head of David. Moreover, he carried away the spoils of the city, which were very many.
31 Puis on déporta tous les habitants de la ville, on les mit à manier la scie, le pic ou la hache et on les employa au travail des briques. David fit ainsi pour toutes les villes des Ammonites, puis il retourna à Jérusalem avec toute l’armée.	31 Also, bringing forth its people, he sawed them, and he drove over them with iron wagons, and he divided them with knives, and he dragged them through brick kilns. So he did to all the citizens of the sons of Ammon. And David returned, with the entire army, to Jerusalem.
