Epistola di San Iacobo Apostolo 4

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Onde le battaglie e le contenzioni son in voi? or non dalli vostri desiderii, che cavalcano nelle membra vostre?	1 Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Is it not precisely in the desiresfighting inside your own selves?
2 Voi desiderate e non avete; uccidete e invidiate, e non potete acquistare; litigate e fate battaglia, e non ricevete, perchè non addimandate.	2 You want something and you lack it; so you kil . You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so youfight to get your way by force. It is because you do not pray that you do not receive;
3 Chiedete, e non ricevete; però che male addimandate, acciò che ne' vostri desiderii vi consumiate.	3 when you do pray and do not receive, it is because you prayed wrongly, wanting to indulge yourpassions.
4 Adulteri, non sapete voi che la amicizia di questo mondo è inimica di Dio? Ma qualunque vorrà essere amico di questo secolo, inimico di Dio sarà ordinato.	4 Adulterers! Do you not realise that love for the world is hatred for God? Anyone who chooses the worldfor a friend is constituted an enemy of God.
5 Or pensate che la Scrittura parli invano: ha invidia il spirito il quale abita in voi?	5 Can you not see the point of the saying in scripture, 'The longing of the spirit he sent to dwel in us is ajealous longing.'?
6 Ma maggiormente dà grazia; per la qual cosa dice: Iddio contrasta alli superbi, ma alli umili dà grazia.	6 But he has given us an even greater grace, as scripture says: God opposes the proud but he accordshis favour to the humble.
7 Adunque state sottoposti a Iddio; e contrastate al diavolo, ed egli fuggirà da voi.	7 Give in to God, then; resist the devil, and he wil run away from you.
8 Approssimatevi a Iddio, ed egli s' approssimarà a voi; emundate le vostre mani, peccatori; e purificate i vostri cuori, voi che siete de' doppi animi.	8 The nearer you go to God, the nearer God wil come to you. Clean your hands, you sinners, and clearyour minds, you waverers.
9 Miseri state e piangete; chè il riso vostro tornerà in pianto, e la vostra allegrezza in tristizia.	9 Appreciate your wretchedness, and weep for it in misery. Your laughter must be turned to grief, yourhappiness to gloom.
10 Umiliatevi (dunque) nel conspetto del Signore, ed egli esalterà voi (nel tempo della tribulazione).	10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he wil lift you up.
11 Non vogliate, fratelli miei, detraere l'uno l'altro di voi; che quelli che fa strazio al fratello, e quelli che giudica il fratello suo, fa strazio alla legge, e giudica la legge. Ma se tu giudichi la legge, non se' fattore della legge, ma giudice.	11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who slanders a brother, or condemns one, is speakingagainst the Law and condemning the Law. But if you condemn the Law, you have ceased to be subject to it andbecome a judge over it.
12 Però ch' egli è uno il portatore e il giudice della legge, il qual puote (l' anime) perdere e salvare.	12 There is only one lawgiver and he is the only judge and has the power to save or to destroy. Who areyou to give a verdict on your neighbour?
13 Ma tu [chi se'] che giudichi il prossimo tuo? Ecco ora voi che dite: oggi o domani anderemo in quella città, e faremovi l'anno, e mercanteremo;	13 Wel now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow, we are off to this or that town; we are going to spend ayear there, trading, and make some money.'
14 li quali non sapete, che cosa sarà (a voi) domani.	14 You never know what wil happen tomorrow: you are no more than a mist that appears for a little whileand then disappears.
15 Però che la vita vostra, che è? un fumo apparendo; e da quindi inanzi sarà sterminata. Per quello e voi dite: se il Signore vorrà, e: se viveremo, faremo questo o quello.	15 Instead of this, you should say, 'If it is the Lord's wil , we shal stil be alive to do this or that.'
16 Ma ora voi v' allegrate nelle vostre superbie. Ogni cotale allegrezza è maligna.	16 But as it is, how boastful and loud -- mouthed you are! Boasting of this kind is always wrong.
17 Dunque quelli che sa fare il bene, e nol fa, peccato è a lui.	17 Everyone who knows what is the right thing to do and does not do it commits a sin.
