BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora staranno li giusti in grande fermezza contro a coloro che sì angosciarono e che tolsono fatiche a coloro.	1 Then the upright will stand up boldly to face those who had oppressed him and had thought so little of his sufferings.
2 Coloro che vede ranno si turberanno per paura orribile, e maraviglierannosi nella subitezza della non sperata salute.	2 And, seeing him, they wil be seized with terrible fear, amazed that he should have been sounexpectedly saved.
3 Piangendo per l'angoscia del spirito, diranno tra loro, coloro che faranno penitenza: costoro sono quelli, li quali alcuna volta noi schernimmo, e avemmoli con una somiglianza di rimproperio.	3 Stricken with remorse, they wil say to one another with groans and labouring breath,
4 Noi insensati estimavamo la loro vita una pazzia, e che il loro fine fosse sanza onore.	4 'This is the one whom we used to mock, making him the butt of our insults, fools that we were! His lifewe regarded as madness, his ending as without honour.
5 Or come sono elli computati tra li figliuoli di Dio, e la parte loro (come è numerata) tra li santi?	5 How has he come to be counted as one of the children of God and to have his lot among the holy ones?
6 Adunque errammo noi dalla via della veritade, e della giustizia il lume non lucè a noi; il sole della intelligenza non ci apparve.	6 Clearly we have strayed from the way of truth; the light of justice has not shone for us, the sun has notrisen for us.
7 Noi siamo rimasti nella via della iniquitade e della perdizione, e andassimo per malagevole via; ma noi non conoscemmo la via del Signore.	7 We have left no path of lawlessness or ruin unexplored, we have crossed deserts where there was notrack, but the way of the Lord is one we have never known.
8 Che ci giovoe la superbia? che prode ci fece la vanagloria delle ricchezze?	8 What good has arrogance been to us? What has been the purpose of our riches and boastfulness?
9 Tutte quelle cose trapassarono sì come ombra, e sì come uno messo corriere;	9 Al those things have passed like a shadow, passed like a fleeting rumour.
10 e sì come nave che trapassa la tempesta, lo vestigio della quale non si puote trovare quando ella è trapassata, nè la via del suo fondo si trova nell' onde;	10 Like a ship that cuts through heaving waves -- leaving no trace to show where it has passed, no wakefrom its keel in the waves.
11 o come l'uccello che vola per l'aere; nullo indizio si trova del suo viaggio, na solo il strepito dell' ale verberanti il lieve vento; e scinde per forza del suo cammin l'aere, e transvoloe commovendo l'ale; e dopo questo niuno segno si trova del suo cammino;	11 Or like a bird flying through the air -- leaving no proof of its passing; it whips the light air with the strokeof its pinions, tears it apart in its whirring rush, drives its way onward with sweeping wing, and afterwards no signis seen of its passage.
12 o come la saetta mandata nel luogo assegnato; l'aere diviso da lei incontinente si è racchiuso, acciò che non si sappia ond' ella è passata.	12 Or like an arrow shot at a mark, the pierced air closing so quickly on itself, there is no knowing whichway the arrow has passed.
13 E così noi nati immantinenti cessiamo d'essere, e nullo segno di virtude possiamo mostrare: noi siamo consunti nella malvagitade nostra.	13 So with us: scarcely born, we disappear; of virtue not a trace have we to show, we have spentourselves in our own wickedness!'
14 E cotali cose dissono in inferno coloro che peccarono.	14 For the hope of the godless is like chaff carried on the wind, like fine spray driven by the storm; itdisperses like smoke before the wind, goes away like the memory of a one-day guest.
15 Però che cotale speranza del crudele è come la polvere che è levata dal vento; e come sottile schiuma che è sparta dall' onda, e come fumo che è spirato dal vento, e sì come la memoria dell' ospite trapassante uno die.	15 But the upright live for ever, their recompense is with the Lord, and the Most High takes care of them.
16 Ma li giusti viveranno in perpetuo, e il merito loro si è appo Dio, e il loro pensiero si è appo l'Altissimo.	16 So they wil receive the glorious crown and the diadem of beauty from the Lord's hand; for he wilshelter them with his right hand and with his arm he wil shield them.
17 E però prendono regno di bellezza e corona bella di mano del Signore; però che la destra sua copre loro, e col suo braccio santo difende loro.	17 For armour he will take his jealous love, he wil arm creation to punish his enemies;
18 E l'amore di Dio prenderae l'armadura, e armerae la creatura a vendetta de' nimici.	18 he wil put on justice as a breastplate, and for helmet wear his forthright judgement;
19 Vestirassi per la corazza, la giustizia; e in luogo di elmo prenderà il diritto giudicio.	19 he wil take up invincible holiness for shield,
20 Prenderae la equitade, la quale è scudo che non puote essere vinto.	20 of his pitiless wrath he will forge a sword, and the universe wil march with him to fight the reckless.
21 Aguzzerae crudele ira per lancia; il mondo con lui insieme combatterae contra li insensati.	21 Bolts truly aimed, the shafts of lightning wil leap, and from the clouds, as from a ful -drawn bow, fly totheir mark;
22 Anderanno diritto le lance de' folgori, e sì come da bene piegato arco de' nuvoli fieno disfatti; a certo luogo sì deveneranno.	22 and the catapult wil hurl hailstones charged with fury. The waters of the sea wil rage against them,the rivers engulf them without pity,
23 E dell' ira petrosa come sassi di gragnuola fieno gettati; e l'acqua del mare infiammerà contro a loro, e li fiumi duramente insieme correranno.	23 a mighty gale wil rise against them and winnow them like a hurricane. Thus wickedness wil lay thewhole earth waste and evil-doing bring down the thrones of the mighty.
24 Lo spirito della virtude starae contro a loro, e come uno impeto di vento li dividerae; e la loro
