Ecclesiaste 5

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non favellare disavvedutamente (nelle cose di Dio); il tuo cuore non si affretti a proferire alcuna cosa inanzi a Iddio; per che Iddio sì è in cielo, (e tutti ode, e sempre ti puote udire,) e tu se' in terra; per ciò ti guarda, e fa che sieno (picciole e) poche le parole tue.	1 Be in no hurry to speak; do not hastily declare yourself before God; for God is in heaven, you on earth.Be sparing, then, of speech:
2 Molti sogni consèguitano a molte faccende, e nella moltitudine del parlare si trova stoltizia.	2 From too much worrying comes illusion, from too much talking, the accents of fol y.
3 Se tu ti votasti a Dio, non t' indugiare di dare il voto; imperò che a lui dispiace la involontaria e indiscreta promissione; onde ciò che tu promettesti, rendilo (migliore; non promettere per non attendere).	3 If you make a vow to God, discharge it without delay, for God has no love for fools. Discharge your vow.
4 Egli è molto meglio non promettere, che dopo la promessa non attendere.	4 Better a vow unmade than made and not discharged.
5 Non dire, quando tu pecchi: la carne mia mi sforza, e non dire dinanzi al prete: non me ne avvidi, acciò che Iddio non si corrucci teco, e per le tue parole distrugga l' opere delle mani tue.	5 Do not al ow your mouth to make a sinner of you, and do not say to the messenger that it was amistake. Why give God occasion to be angry with you and ruin al the work that you have done?
6 Ove sono molti sogni, ivi sono molte vanitadi, e molte parole sanza misura; ma temi Iddio.	6 From too many illusions come futility and too much talk. Therefore, fear God.
7 E se tu vedrai biasimare li poveri, e fare loro forza (non ti maravigliare tu), e se tu vedi la giustizia (de' men possenti) travolgere per le provincie, non ti maravigliare tu di queste cose; imperò che sopra di quello che è grande, egli è un altro più grande (sopra tutti); e sopra di questo egli è degli altri maggiori.	7 If in a province you see the poor oppressed, fair judgement and justice violated, do not be surprised, forover every official there watches a higher official, and over these, higher officials stil .
8 E lo re di tutto il mondo sì è Iddio, (il quale farà giustizia per li servi suoi).	8 But what the land yields is for the benefit of al , a king is served by the fields.
9 L'avaro mai non si puote empire di pecunia, e chi ama le ricchezze non averae frutto di loro; e ancora in questo sì è vanitade.	9 No one who loves money ever has enough, no one who loves luxury has any income; this, too, is futile.
10 Dove sien molte ricchezze, sono molti mangiatori; or che prode è adunque a coloro che le possedono, se non che le vedono cogli occhi?	10 Where goods abound, parasites abound: where is the owner's profit, apart from feasting his eyes?
11 Dolce cosa pare il dormire a colui che s'è affaticato, o poco o assai ch' elli manuchi; e il ricco non lascia dormire il suo saturamento.	11 The labourer's sleep is sweet, whether he has eaten little or much, but the surfeit of the rich wil not lethim sleep at al .
12 Ed è un' altra pessima infermità, la quale io vidi sotto il sole, cioè che ricchezze radunate sono per danno e per vergogna del signore loro.	12 Something grossly unjust I observe under the sun: riches stored and turning to loss for their owner.
13 Onde spesse volte sono distrutte con grande dolore; il figliuolo suo campa in grande mendicitade.	13 An unlucky venture, and those riches are lost; a son is born to him, and he has nothing to leave him.
14 E come uscie ignudo del ventre della sua madre, così (campa della morte) quando muore, non ne porta seco alcuna cosa della sua fatica.	14 Naked from his mother's womb he came; as naked as he came wil he depart; not one of hisachievements can he take with him.
15 È maravigliosa infirmitade; e come egli vive, così se ne va via; or dunque che giova, che s' affatica in vento?	15 And something else grossly unjust: that as he came, so must he go; what profit can he show aftertoiling to earn the wind,
16 E tutto tempo di sua vita mangia in tribulazione e infirmità, e in tristizia e in obbrobrio.	16 as he spends the rest of his days in darkness, mourning, many sorrows, sickness and exasperation.
17 Questo adunque pare al mio animo, ch' elli manuchi e beva, e lieto stii della fatica sua, la quale ebbe sotto il sole, e questo faccia, quanto elli vive, de' beni che Iddio gli ha dati; e questo averà per sua parte.	17 So my conclusion is this: true happiness lies in eating and drinking and enjoying whatever has beenachieved under the sun, throughout the life given by God: for this is the lot of humanity.
18 Ogni uomo a cui diede Iddio ricchezze e possessione, e balìa che loro possano godere e usare [in] allegrezza, questo avviene di grande dono da Dio.	18 And whenever God gives someone riches and property, with the ability to enjoy them and to findcontentment in work, this is a gift from God.
19 Però che Iddio tiene occupato il suo cuore in diletti, e però non si ricorda del tempo della vita sua.	19 For such a person wil hardly notice the passing of time, so long as God keeps his heart occupied withjoy.
