1 A li fratelli Giudei, i quali sono per lo Egitto, salute dicono li fratelli Giudei i quali sono in Ierusalem, e quelli che sono nella regione Giudea, e buona pace.	1 'To their brothers, the Jews living in Egypt, from their brothers, the Jews in Jerusalem and Judaea,greetings and untroubled peace.
2 Faccivi Iddio bene, e ricordisi del suo testamento, lo qual parlò ad Abraam e Isaac e Iacob, servi suoi fedeli.	2 'May God prosper you, remembering his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, his faithfulservants.
3 E dia a voi tal cuore, che voi l'amiate e facciate la sua volontà, con lo cuore grande e di buona volontà.	3 May he give you al a heart to worship him and to do his will with a generous mind and a wil ing spirit.
4 Apra (e illumini) il cuor vostro nella sua legge e nelli suoi comandamenti, e facciavi pace.	4 May he open your hearts to his Law and his precepts, and give you peace.
5 Esaudisca le vostre orazioni, e rimanga riconciliato con voi, e non vi abbandoni nel tempo pericoloso.	5 May he hear your prayers and be reconciled with you, and not abandon you in time of evil.
6 E in questo tempo noi stiamo in orazione per voi.	6 Such is our prayer for you.
7 Regnando Demetrio, nell' anno centesimo sessagesimo nono, noi Giudei abbiamo scritto a voi nella tribulazione e nello impeto, ch' è sopravenuto a noi in questi anni, da quel tempo in qua che lasone si parti della terra santa e del regno	7 'During the reign of Demetrius, in the year 169, we Jews wrote to you as fol ows, "In the extremity oftrouble that befel us in the years after Jason and his associates had betrayed the Holy Land and the kingdom,
8 Hanno abbruciata la porta, e hanno isparso il sangue innocente; e noi pregammo il Signore, e siamo stati esauditi; e abbiamo offerto il sacrificio e la farina, e abbiamo offerti li pani.	8 burning down the Temple gateway and shedding innocent blood, we prayed to the Lord and were thenheard. And we then offered a sacrifice, with wheat-flour, we lit the lamps and we set out the loaves."
9 E [ora] frequentate i giorni della celebrazione de' tabernacoli del mese di decembre.	9 'And we now recommend you too to keep the feast of Shelters in the month of Chislev, in the year onehundred and eighty-eight.'
10 Nell' anno centesimo ottogesimo ottavo il popolo, lo qual è in Ierusalem e in Giudea, e il senato e Giuda, ad Aristobolo, maestro di Tolomeo re, lo qual è della generazione de' sacerdoti unti, e a quelli Giudei i quali sono in Egitto, salute e sanità.	10 'The people of Jerusalem and of Judaea, the senate and Judas, to Aristobulus, tutor to King Ptolemyand one of the family of the anointed priests, and to the Jews in Egypt, greetings and good health.
11 Noi, liberati di gran pericoli da Dio, referiamo magnifiche grazie a lui, sì come abbiamo combattuto contra uno così fatto re.	11 'Since we have been rescued by God from great danger, we give him great thanks for championingour cause against the king,
12 Esso certo fece uscire fuori di Persia coloro che combatterono contro a noi e contro alla città santa.	12 for he it was who carried off those who had taken up arms against the Holy City.
13 Però che essendo in Persia esso duca, e con lui esèrcito sanza numero, cadette nel templo di Nanea, ingannato dagli sacerdoti (de! templo) di Nanea.	13 For when their leader reached Persia with his seemingly irresistible army, he was cut to pieces in thetemple of Nanaea, as the result of a ruse employed by the priests who served that goddess.
14 Antioco e li suoi amici venne a quel luogo, per abitar con lui, e per pigliare gran quantità di danari per nome di dote.	14 On the pretext of marrying Nanaea, Antiochus came to the place with his friends, intending to take itsmany treasures as a dowry.
15 E avendoli offerti li sacerdoti di Nanea, lui con pochi essendovi entrati nel circuito del templo, serrarono il templo,	15 The priests of Nanaea had put these on display, and he for his part had entered the temple precinctswith only a small retinue. As soon as Antiochus had gone inside the temple, the priests shut him in,
16 essendovi entrato Antioco; e aperta una occulta entrata del templo, gettando per quella pietre, uccisero il duca e quegli i quali erano con lui; e tagliorono loro a pezzi, e tagliati loro i capi, li gettarono fuori.	16 opened a trap-door hidden in the ceiling and struck the leader down by hurling stones likethunderbolts. They then cut him into pieces and threw his head to those who were waiting outside.
17 E in tutte queste cose benedetto sia Iddio, i quali gastiga e' malvagi.	17 Blessed in al things be our God, who has delivered the sacrilegious over to death!
18 Noi adunque, i quali abbiamo a fare la purificazione del templo nel vicesimo [quinto] dì del mese di decembre, abbiamo deliberato esser necessario di avvisarvi, acciò che anco voi facciate la festa de' tabernacoli, e lo dì del fuoco, lo qual fu dato quando Neemia offerse i sacrificii dopo la edificazione del templo e dell' altare.	18 'As we shal be celebrating the purification of the Temple on the twenty-fifth of Chislev, we consider itproper to notify you, so that you too may celebrate it, as you do the feast of Shelters and the fire that appearedwhen Nehemiah, the builder of the Temple and the altar, offered sacrifice.
19 Però che quando i nostri padri erano [condotti in Persia] amatori di Dio, tolto il fuoco dell' altare occultamente, lo nascosero nella valle dove era uno pozzo profondo e secco, e in quello lo difenderono e conservarono, sì che a tutti era il luogo incognito.	19 For when our ancestors were being deported to Persia, the devout priests of the time took some ofthe fire from the altar and hid it secretly in a hole like a dry well, where they concealed it in such a way that theplace was unknown to anyone.
20 Ed essendo passati molti anni, e piacque a Dio che fosse mandato Neemia dal re di Persia, mandò Neemia i nepoti di quelli sacerdoti, i quali aveano nascosto il fuoco, a cercarlo; e come ci fu narrato, non trovorono il fuoco, ma acqua crassa (e spessa).	20 When some years had elapsed, in God's good time, Nehemiah, commissioned by the king of Persia,sent the descendants of the priests who had hidden the fire to look for it. When they reported that in fact theyhad found not fire but a thick liquid, Nehemiah ordered them to draw some out and bring it back.
21 E comandò loro che ne pigliassono, e la portassono a tui; e li sacrificii, ch' erano sopra posti, comandò Neemia sacerdote che fossono bagnati con questa acqua, e le legna ch' erano sopra poste.	21 When they had done this, Nehemiah ordered the priests to pour this liquid over the sacrificialmaterials, that is, the wood and what lay on it.
22 E fatto questo, e fu tempo che lo sole risplendette, lo quale prima era nel nuvolo, s' accese un gran fuoco, sì che tutti si maravegliarono.	22 When this had been done, and when in due course the sun, which had previously been clouded over,shone out, a great fire flared up, to the astonishment of al .
23 E tutti li sacerdoti facevano orazione, mentre che lo sacrificio si consumava, Ionata cominciando, e tutti gli altri rispondendo.	23 While the sacrifice was being burned, the priests offered prayer, Jonathan intoning with al the priests,and the rest responding with Nehemiah.
24 E Neemia faceva orazione in questo modo: Signore Iddio, creatore di tutti, terribile, forte e giusto e misericorde, lo quale sei buono re,	24 The prayer took this form, "Lord, Lord God, Creator of all things, awesome, strong, just, merciful, theonly king and benefactor,
25 solo soprastante (ed eccellente), solo giusto e onnipotente ed eterno, lo qual liberi Israel da ogni male, lo qual facesti li padri eletti, e santificasti loro,	25 the only provider, who alone are just, almighty and everlasting, the deliverer of Israel from every evil,who made our fathers your chosen ones and sanctified them,
26 ricevi questo sacrificio per tutto il popolo tuo Israel, e conserva la parte tua, e santifica.	26 accept this sacrifice on behalf of all your people Israel, and protect your heritage and consecrate it.
27 Congrega la dispersione nostra, libera loro i quali servono alle genti; quelli i quali sono in dispregio e in abominazione, fa che li guardi, acciò che sappino le genti, che tu sei Iddio nostro.	27 Bring together those of us who are dispersed, set free those in slavery among the heathen, lookfavourably on those held in contempt or abhorrence, and let the heathen know that you are our God.
28 Affiiggi quelli i quali opprimono noi e ci ingiuriano nella loro superbia.	28 Punish those who oppress us and affront us by their insolence,
29 E poni e ordina il popolo tuo nel luogo santo tuo, sì come disse Moisè.	29 and plant your people firmly in your Holy Place, as Moses promised."
30 E li sacerdoti cantavano li inni, persino che fusse consumato lo sacrificio.	30 'The priests then chanted hymns accompanied by the harp.
31 Ed essendo consumato lo sacrificio, dello residuo deli' acqua Neemia comandò che fusse buttata. sopra le pietre maggiori.	31 When the sacrifice had been burnt, Nehemiah ordered the remaining liquid to be poured over largestones,
32 La qual cosa fatta, la fiamma s' accese in quelle; ma del lume, lo qual risplendette dall' altare, fu consumata.	32 and when this was done a flame flared up, to be absorbed in a corresponding blaze of light from thealtar.
33 E manifestata che fu questa cosa, fu significato allo re di Persia, che era apparso acqua nel luogo nel quale i sacerdoti, i quali furono transferiti, aveano nascosto il fuoco; della qual Neemia, e quelli ch' erano con lui, aveano purificati i sacrificii.	33 When the matter became known and the king of the Persians heard that, in the place where the exiledpriests had hidden the fire, a liquid had appeared, with which Nehemiah and his people had purified thesacrificial offerings,
34 E considerando il re, e diligentemente esaminando questa cosa, feceli uno templo, acciò che provasse quello ch' è fatto.	34 the king, after verifying the facts, had the place enclosed and pronounced sacred.
35 E avendolo provato, diede ai sacerdoti molti beni e altri doni; e pigliandoli con le mani, dava loro.	35 To the people on whom the king bestowed it, he granted a part of the considerable revenue hederived from it.
36 E chiamò Neemia questo luogo NEFTAR, che è interpretato Purificazione; e anco chiamasi appo molti NEFI.	36 Nehemiah and his people termed this stuff "nephtar", which means "purification", but it is commonly cal ed "naphta".
