Judit 13

1 E fatto che fu sera, s' affrettorono i suoi servi di andare alli suoi luoghi; e chiuse Vagao gli usci della camera, e andossene.	1 When it grew late, his servants quickly withdrew. Bagoas closed the tent from the outside and excluded the attendants from their master's presence. They went off to their beds, for they were all tired from the prolonged banquet.
2 Ed erano tutti gravati dal vino.	2 Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes, who lay prostrate on his bed, for he was sodden with wine.
3 Ed era Iudit sola nella camera.	3 She had ordered her maid to stand outside the bedroom and wait, as on the other days, for her to come out; she said she would be going out for her prayer. To Bagoas she had said this also.
4 E Oloferne giacea sopra il letto, e dormìa molto forte per la ebrietà.	4 When all had departed, and no one, small or great, was left in the bedroom, Judith stood by Holofernes' bed and said within herself: "O Lord, God of all might, in this hour look graciously on my undertaking for the exaltation of Jerusalem;
5 E disse Iudit alla sua fanciulla, che la stesse di fuori dinanzi alla camera, e ponesse mente (e custodisse).	5 now is the time for aiding your heritage and for carrying out my design to shatter the enemies who have risen against us."
6 E stette Iudit dinanzi al letto, orando con lacrime, e con lo moto de' labbri in silenzio,	6 She went to the bedpost near the head of Holofernes, and taking his sword from it,
7 dicendo conferma me, Signore Iddio d' Israel, e ragguarda in quest' ora alle opere della mia mano, che come tu promettesti, così dirizzi la città tua Ierusalem, e quello ch' io pensai, credendo di poterlo far per te, il facci.	7 drew close to the bed, grasped the hair of his head, and said, "Strengthen me this day, O God of Israel!"
8 E avendo dette queste parole, andò alla colonna che era al capo del suo letto; e il pugnale che legato pendea alla colonna, sì lo sciolse.	8 Then with all her might she struck him twice in the neck and cut off his head.
9 E avendolo isnudato, pigliollo per li capelli del capo, e disse: confermami, Signor Iddio (d' Israel,) in quest' ora.	9 She rolled his body off the bed and took the canopy from its supports. Soon afterward, she came out and handed over the head of Holofernes to her maid,
10 E (percosselo, e) diedeli due colpi suso il `collo, e tagliolli lo capo; e tolse via il padiglione sottilissimo tinto in rosato dalle colonne, e involse il corpo suo troncato.	10 who put it into her food pouch; and the two went off together as they were accustomed to do for prayer. They passed through the camp, and skirting the ravine, reached Bethulia on the mountain. As they approached its gates,
11 E dopo un poco sì uscì fuori, e diede il capo di Oloferne alla fanciulla sua, e comandogli che lo ponesse nello sacculo suo.	11 Judith shouted to the guards from a distance: "Open! Open the gate! God, our God, is with us. Once more he has made manifest his strength in Israel and his power against our enemies; he has done it this very day."
12 E uscirono amendue, secondo la consuetudine sua, quasi come se andassero alla orazione; e passarono il campo, e attorniando la valle, vennero alla porta della città.	12 When the citizens heard her voice, they quickly descended to their city gate and summoned the city elders.
13 E disse Iudit dalla lunga alle guardie delle mura: aprite le porte; però che Iddio è con noi, lo quale fece potenza in Israel.	13 All the people, from the least to the greatest, hurriedly assembled, for her return seemed unbelievable. They opened the gate and welcomed the two women. They made a fire for light; and when they gathered around the two,
14 E avendo udito gli uomini la voce sua, chiamarono (i principali e) i sacerdoti della città.	14 Judith urged them with a loud voice: "Praise God, praise him! Praise God, who has not withdrawn his mercy from the house of Israel, but has shattered our enemies by my hand this very night."
15 E corsero a lei tutti, dal minimo persino al massimo; però che speravano ch' ella non dovesse più venire.	15 Then she took the head out of the pouch, showed it to them, and said: "Here is the head of Holofernes, general in charge of the Assyrian army, and here is the canopy under which he lay in his drunkenness. The Lord struck him down by the hand of a woman.
16 E, accendendo le luminarie, tutti la circondorono; e Iudit salì in uno luogo alto, e comandò che ognuno istesse cheto. E dopo che tutti stettero cheti,	16 As the Lord lives, who has protected me in the path I have followed, I swear that it was my face that seduced Holofernes to his ruin, and that he did not sin with me to my defilement or disgrace."
17 disse Iudit: laudate il nostro Signore Iddio, il quale non abbandona quelli i quali sperano in lui;	17 All the people were greatly astonished. They bowed down and worshiped God, saying with one accord, "Blessed are you, our God, who today have brought to nought the enemies of your people."
18 e in me serva sua hae adempiuta la sua misericordia, la quale lui promise alla casa d' Israel; e ha ucciso lo inimico del popolo suo nella mano mia in questa notte.	18 Then Uzziah said to her: "Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth; and blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth, who guided your blow at the head of the chief of our enemies.
19 E cavando fuori il capo di Oloferne del sacculo, dimostrollo loro, dicendo: ecco il capo di Oloferne principe dello esercito degli Assirii, ed ecco il padiglione suo sottilissimo, sotto lo qual giacea nella sua ebrietà, nello quale per la mano di una femina lo percosse lo Signore Iddio nostro.	19 Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God.
20 Ma esso nostro Signore Iddio vive, però che l'angelo suo mi ha custodita, e di qui andando, e ivi stando, e di là venendo qui; e non permise il Signore, la serva sua esser contaminata, ma senza corruzione di peccato ridussemi a voi, lieta nella sua vittoria, nello mio partimento da loro, e nella vostra libertà.	20 May God make this redound to your everlasting honor, rewarding you with blessings, because you risked your life when your people were being oppressed, and you averted our disaster, walking uprightly before our God." And all the people answered, "Amen! Amen!"
21 Confessatevi a lui tutti, però ch' egli è buono, però che nel secolo si trova la sua misericordia.
22 E tutti, adorando il Signore, dissero a lei : benedisse te il Signore nella virtù sua, però che per te lo Signore ha ridotto a nulla i nostri inimici.
23 Ma Ozia, principe del popolo d' Israel, disse a lei sei tu benedetta, figliuola mia, dal Signore Iddio eccelso, sopra tutte le donne della terra.
24 Benedetto sia il Signore, il qual creò il cielo e la terra, il quale ti dirizzò nelle ferite del capo del principe delli nostri inimici.
25 Però ch' egli ha oggi per tal modo magnificato il nome tuo, che non si parta la tua lode della bocca degli uomini, li quali si ricorderanno della virtù del Signore in eterno, per li quali tu non hai perdonato all' anima tua (ed estimato la tua vita) per le tribulazioui e le angustie (del tuo popolo e) della tua generazione, ma tu hai sovvenuto alla ruina nostra dinanzi al cospetto del nostro Iddio.
26 E disse tutto il popolo così sia, così sia.
27 E in questo fu chiamato Achior, e venne, e disse a lui Iudit: lo Signore Iddio d'Israel, dello quale tu facesti fede (dinanzi ad Oloferne e di tutti li suoi principi) che lui si vendicherebbe delli suoi inimici, lui [tagliò lo] capo di tutti li increduli (si è caduto) questa notte nelle mie mani.
28 E acciò che per esperienza tu conoschi ch' egli sia così, ecco il capo di Oloferne, il qual disprezzò Iddio d'Israel nella presunzione della sua superbia, e a te minacciava la morte, dicendo: quando il popolo d'Israel sarà preso, io comanderò che tu sii traforato con uno coltello da uno lato all' altro.
29 Vedendo Achior il capo di Oloferne, angustiato per la paura ( ch' egli avea) chinossi con la faccia sopra la terra, e lasso per ansietà non potea più.
30 E riassunto uno poco il spirito, fu ricreato; e gittossi ai piedi suoi, e adorolla, e disse:
31 Benedetta sei tu nel cospetto del tuo Iddio in tutta la casa di Iacob; però che in tutte le genti, le quali udiranno il tuo nome, sarà magnificato il Dio d'Israel sopra di te.
