Neemia 1

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Le parole di Neemia figliuolo di Elchia. E fatto è nel mese Casleu (cioè dicembre) nell' anno vigesimo; e io era in uno castello chiamato Susis.	1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. It happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year,while I was in the citadel of Susa,
2 E venne Anani, uno de' miei fratelli, lui e alcuni uomini di Giuda; e dimanda'gli de' Giudei i quali erano rimasti di quelli che furono presi, e di Ierusalem.	2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with some men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews --those who had escaped and those who survived from the captivity -- and about Jerusalem.
3 E dissero a me: quelli li quali sono rimasti e sono restati, di quelli che furono presi ivi nella provincia, sono in grande afflizione e obbrobrio; e il muro di Ierusalem si è dissipato, e le porte sue sono combuste al fuoco.	3 They replied, 'The survivors remaining there in the province since the captivity are in a very bad anddemoralised condition: the wal s of Jerusalem are in ruins and its gates have been burnt down.'
4 E con ciò sia cosa ch' io udissi queste parole, sedei e piansi molti dì; e digiunava e orava nel cospetto di Dio del cielo.	4 On hearing this I sat down and wept; for some days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God ofheaven.
5 E dissi: io ti priego, Signore Iddio del cielo, forte, grande e terribile, lo quale osservi il patto e la misericordia con quelli che ti amano, e servano. li comandamenti tuoi,	5 I said, 'Yahweh, God of heaven -- the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps a covenant of faithfullove with those who love him and obey his commandments-
6 sia fatta la tua orecchia ascoltante, e gli occhii tuoi aperti, acciò che tu odi la orazione del servo tuo, con la quale io orerò dinanzi a te oggi, notte e dì, per i figliuoli d' Israel tuoi servi; e confesso per li peccati [de' figliuoli] d' Israel, per li quali peccarono a te; e io e la casa del padre mio peccammo.	6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to listen to your servant's prayer, which I now offer to youday and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I admit the sins of the Israelites, which we havecommitted against you. Both I and my father's House have sinned;
7 Vanamente siamo sedotti, e non osservammo lo comandamento e le cerimonie e li giudicii, li quali comandasti a Moisè servo tuo.	7 we have acted very wickedly towards you by not keeping the commandments, laws and rulings whichyou enjoined on your servant Moses.
8 Ricòrdati di quello che tu notificasti a Moisè tuo servo, dicendo: quando voi avrete trapassati i miei comandamenti, io vi disperderò nelli popoli.	8 Remember, I beg you, the promise which you solemnly made to your servant Moses, "If you areunfaithful, I shal scatter you among the peoples;
9 E se voi ritornerete a me, e osserverete li miei comandamenti, facendo l'opere; anco se voi sarete menati alle estremità del cielo, di quelli luoghi vi congregherò, e indurrovvi nel luogo ch' io ho eletto, dove debbe abitare il mio nome.	9 but if you come back to me and keep my commandments and practise them, even though those whohave been banished are at the very sky's end, I shal gather them from there and bring them back to the placewhich I have chosen as a dwel ing-place for my name."
10 E loro saranno tuoi servi, e tuo popolo, li quali redimesti nella tua grande fortezza, e nella mano valida.	10 Since they are your servants, your people, whom you have redeemed with your mighty power andstrong hand,
11 Priegoti, Signore; sia la tua orecchia attenta alla orazione del servo tuo, e alla orazione de' servi tuoi, i quali voleno temere lo nome tuo; e dirizza il servo tuo oggi, e dàlli misericordia dinanzi a questo uomo. Io certamente era servitore del re a darli a bere.	11 O Lord, let your ear now be attentive to your servant's prayer and to the prayer of your servants whowant to revere your name. I beg you let your servant be successful today and win this man's compassion.' At thetime I was cupbearer to the king.
