1 Frattanto Giuda venne a conoscere il nome dei Romani. Come essi, cioè, sono potenti in guerra e sono benevoli verso tutti quelli che si uniscono a loro, stringono amicizia con quanti ricorrono a loro e sono potenti in guerra.	1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.
2 Gli parlarono pure delle guerre e degli atti di valore da essi compiuti tra i Galati e come li avevano sottomessi e resi tributari.	2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.
3 Quanto avevano fatto nella regione della Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere di argento e di oro che vi si trovano	3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,
4 e come si erano impadroniti di tutta quella regione con la loro prudenza e perseveranza, sebbene il luogo fosse molto distante da loro. Avevano sconfitto e inflitto gravi colpi ai re che erano andati contro di essi fin dall'estremità della terra e avevano costretto gli altri a pagare loro un tributo annuale.	4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.
5 Sconfissero pure in guerra Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittim, e quanti si erano ribellati, assoggettandoli a sé.	5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.
6 Anche Antioco il Grande, re dell'Asia, che mosse contro di loro in guerra con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito molto grande, fu da essi sconfitto;	6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.

Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.
11 Quanto agli altri regni e alle isole che si erano loro opposti, li distrussero e li sottomisero. Con i loro amici, invece, e con quelli che si fidavano di loro, essi mantennero amicizia.	11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;
12 Stesero il loro potere su re vicini e lontani, e quanti udivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.	12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.
13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi, invece, non vogliono, li depongono; e così si sono levati molto in alto.	13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.
14 Con tutto ciò, neppure uno di essi ha cinto il diadema, né si è rivestito di porpora per grandeggiare.	14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.
15 Si sono dati invece un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi uomini si consultano continuamente intorno al popolo per il suo buon andamento.	15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.
16 Ogni anno affidano il potere su di sé e il dominio su tutta la loro terra a un solo uomo. Tutti ubbidiscono a questo solo e non vi è tra loro né invidia né gelosia.	16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.
17 Giuda, pertanto, scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Accos, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma per stringere con essi amicizia e alleanza,	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.
18 affinché li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci, vedendo come il loro regno era deciso a ridurre Israele in schiavitù.	18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.
19 Giunsero a Roma dopo un viaggio molto lungo; entrarono nel Senato e, presa la parola, dissero:	19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:
20 "Giuda, detto Maccabeo, i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviato a voi per stabilire con voi alleanza e pace e per essere noi iscritti come vostri alleati e amici".	20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."
21 Il discorso piacque ai presenti.	21 The proposal pleased the Romans,
22 Ecco la copia della lettera che essi fecero incidere su tavole di bronzo e che inviarono a Gerusalemme perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e di alleanza:	22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:
23 "Sia bene ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, in mare e sulla terra, per sempre! La spada e l'inimicizia siano lontane da essi!	23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.
24 Se sarà mossa guerra per prima ai Romani o a qualunque dei loro alleati in tutto il loro dominio,	24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,
25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco, come le circostanze permetteranno, con cuore sincero.	25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;
26 Non doneranno ai nemici né forniranno loro grano, armi, danaro o navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno i loro impegni senza pretendere nulla.	26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.
27 Allo stesso modo se alla nazione dei Giudei per prima sopravverrà una guerra, i Romani di cuore combatteranno al suo fianco come le circostanze permetteranno loro.	27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,
28 Ai nemici non sarà dato né grano né armi né danaro né navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.	28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.
29 E' in questi termini che i Romani hanno stretto alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.	29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.
30 Se dopo di ciò gli uni o gli altri vorranno aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno a loro piacimento e ciò che avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà obbligatorio.	30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.
31 Riguardo ai mali che il re Demetrio ha loro causato, abbiamo scritto a lui dicendogli: "Perché fai pesare il tuo giogo sui nostri amici e alleati Giudei?	31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?
32 Se, dunque, essi interverranno ancora contro di te, renderemo loro giustizia e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra".	32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"
