1 Il re Antioco, mentre percorreva le regioni settentrionali, sentì dire che in Persia vi era Elimaide, città famosa per ricchezza, argento e oro,	1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,
2 e che il suo tempio era molto ricco e che vi si trovavano drappi d'oro, corazze e armi, lasciatevi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, il re macedone che per primo regnò sui Greci.	2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.
3 Vi andò, allora, e cercò di occupare la città e di depredarla; ma non vi riuscì perché gli abitanti della città, conosciuto il suo disegno,	3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.
4 insorsero contro di lui a mano armata ed egli fuggì, allontanandosi di lì con grande dispiacere per far ritorno in Babilonia.	4 They resisted him by force of arms. He was routed, and began retreating, very gloomily, towardsBabylon.
5 Mentre era ancora in Persia, giunse poi un tale, il quale gli annunciò che le truppe partite per la terra di Giuda erano state travolte.	5 But, while he was stil in Persia, news reached him that the armies which had invaded Judaea hadbeen routed,
6 Lisia, in particolare, partito con un forte esercito, vi era stato respinto dagli Israeliti, i quali si erano rinforzati con le armi, i mezzi di guerra e le numerose spoglie tolte alle truppe sopraffatte.	6 and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee beforethe Jews; that the latter were now stronger than ever, thanks to the arms, supplies and abundant spoils acquiredfrom the armies they had cut to pieces,
7 Essi, inoltre, avevano abbattuto l'abominazione che egli aveva eretto sull'altare in Gerusalemme e avevano cinto d'alte mura, come per l'innanzi, il santuario e Bet-Zur, che era una sua città.	7 and that they had pul ed down the abomination which he had erected on the altar in Jerusalem, hadencircled the sanctuary with high wal s as in the past, and had fortified Beth-Zur, one of his cities.
8 All'udire queste notizie, il re restò spaventato e fortemente agitato; si gettò sul letto e cadde ammalato, per il dispiacere che non si era realizzato ciò che egli desiderava.	8 When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bedand fel sick with grief, since things had not turned out for him as he had planned.
9 Rimase così per molti giorni, mentre una profonda tristezza si rinnovava continuamente in lui. Pensò che stava per morire.	9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.
10 Perciò chiamò tutti i suoi amici e disse loro: "Il sonno s'è ritirato dai miei occhi e il mio cuore è abbattuto per l'inquietudine.	10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.
11 Mi sono detto: A quale afflizione sono giunto e in quale grande tempesta mi dibatto! Ero, infatti, felice e amato nella mia potenza.	11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.
12 Ora, invece, mi assale il ricordo dei mali che ho fatto a Gerusalemme, quando presi tutti i suoi oggetti d'argento e d'oro e quando inviai a sterminare gli abitanti di Giuda senza motivo.	12 But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .
13 Riconosco che è a causa di tali cose che questi mali mi hanno raggiunto; ed ecco con profonda tristezza perisco in terra straniera!".	13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'
14 Chiamò Filippo, uno dei suoi amici, e lo costituì capo di tutto il suo regno.	14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.
15 Gli consegnò il diadema, il suo manto e l'anello, l'incaricò di dirigere suo figlio Antioco e di prepararlo al trono.	15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.

17 Ma Lisia, appena seppe che il re era morto, proclamò re suo figlio Antioco, ch'egli aveva educato da piccolo, e gli impose il nome di Eupatore.	17 Lysias, learning that the king was dead, established on the throne in succession to him his sonAntiochus, whom he had brought up from childhood -- and styled him Eupator.
18 Ora quelli dell'Acra bloccavano Israele intorno al santuario, cercando sempre di fargli del male e di sostenere invece i gentili.	18 The people in the Citadel at the time were blockading Israel round the sanctuary and were takingevery opportunity to harm them and to support the gentiles.
19 Giuda perciò, avendo deciso di sterminarli, fece convocare tutto il popolo per assediarli.	19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.
20 Si radunarono, infatti, e l'anno 15 0 posero l'assedio all'Acra, costruendo piattaforme e macchine.	20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.
21 Alcuni degli assediati, tuttavia, riuscirono a rompere l'accerchiamento e, unitisi a loro alcuni Israeliti rinnegati,	21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.
22 andarono dal re e gli dissero: "Fino a quando tarderai a far giustizia e a vendicare i nostri fratelli?	22 They made their way to the king and said, 'How much longer are you going to wait before you seejustice done and avenge our fellows?
23 Noi accettammo volentieri di servire a tuo padre, di seguire le sue parole e di osservare i suoi decreti.	23 We were content to serve your father, to comply with his orders, and to obey his edicts.
24 Per questa ragione i figli del nostro popolo si sono alienati da noi. Anzi, quanti di noi vengono scovati sono messi a morte e i nostri campi sono devastati.	24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.
25 E non è contro di noi soltanto che hanno steso la mano, ma anche contro i loro confinanti.	25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.
26 Ecco, ora stanno accampati intorno all'Acra, in Gerusalemme, per espugnarla, e hanno fortificato il santuario e Bet-Zur.	26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.
27 Se non ti affretti a prevenirli, faranno cose più gravi di queste e tu non potrai più arrestarli".	27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'
28 All'udire ciò, il re si adirò e fece radunare tutti i suoi amici, comandanti dell'esercito e preposti alla cavalleria.	28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.
29 Accorsero da lui truppe mercenarie anche da altri regni e dalle isole del mare.	29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.
30 Il numero delle sue truppe era di centomila fanti, ventimila cavalieri e trentadue elefanti addestrati alla guerra.	30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.
31 Passarono per l'Idumea e posero l'accampamento contro Bet-Zur. Combatterono per molti giorni e si fecero delle macchine. Gli assediati, però, fecero una sortita e le incendiarono, combattendo valorosamente.	31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.
32 Giuda, allora, partì anch'egli dall'Acra e si accampò presso Bet-Zaccaria, di fronte al campo del re.	32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.
33 Il re, però, si levò di buon mattino e trasferì l'armata, piena d'ardore, sulla strada di Bet-Zaccaria, dove le truppe si disposero al combattimento e suonarono le trombe.	33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.
34 Per aizzarli al combattimento, misero davanti agli elefanti succo di uva e di more.	34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.
35 Ripartirono poi queste bestie tra le varie falangi e intorno a ciascun elefante disposero mille uomini con corazze a maglia e, sulla testa, elmi di bronzo, mentre cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano disposti intorno a ciascuna bestia.	35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.
36 Costoro in ogni caso stavano là, ovunque era la bestia; l'accompagnavano ovunque andava e mai si allontanavano da essa.	36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.
37 Delle torri di legno, fortemente protette, erano assicurate su ciascuna bestia mediante congegni e in ciascuna torre vi erano quattro uomini armati che combattevano da sopra ad essa, e in più l'indiano.	37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.
38 Quanto al resto della cavalleria, il re la ripartì di qua e di là, ai due lati dell'armata per sconvolgere il nemico e per proteggere le falangi.	38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.
39 Quando poi il sole rifulse sugli scudi d'oro e di bronzo, le montagne ne furono illuminate e brillarono come lampade di fuoco.	39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.
40 Una parte dell'armata del re si schierò sulle alture della montagna, gli altri invece nella pianura e incominciarono ad avanzare cautamente e ordinatamente.	40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.
41 Restavano tutti scossi quelli che udivano il clamore della loro moltitudine, il calpestio di tanta gente e l'urto delle armi. Era, infatti, un esercito straordinariamente grande e potente.	41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.
42 Giuda avanzò col suo esercito all'attacco e nell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.	42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.
43 Eleàzaro, detto Auaran, vedendo uno degli elefanti bardato con armature regali, e più alto di tutti gli altri, credendo che sopra di esso vi fosse il re,	43 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, noticing that one of the elephants was royal y caparisoned and was also tal erthan al the others, and supposing that the king was mounted on it,
44 diede se stesso per salvare il suo popolo e per acquistarsi un nome eterno.	44 sacrificed himself to save his people and win an imperishable name.
45 Corse arditamente verso di esso in mezzo alla falange, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra, sicché i nemici si scindevano davanti a lui da una parte e dall'altra.	45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,
46 Cacciatosi sotto l'elefante, lo colpì di sotto e l'uccise. La bestia però cadde a terra sopra di lui ed ivi egli morì.	46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.
47 I Giudei tuttavia, vedendo la forza del re e lo slancio delle sue truppe, ripiegarono davanti ad esse.	47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.
48 Gli uomini dell'armata del re, allora, salirono contro di essi alla volta di Gerusalemme e il re fece porre il campo contro la Giudea e contro il monte Sion,	48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.
49 mentre egli trattò la pace con quelli che erano a Bet-Zur, i quali uscirono dalla città perché non avevano più viveri per sostenervi un assedio, essendo la terra in riposo.	49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.
50 Così il re, presa Bet-Zur e postovi un presidio per custodirla,	50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.
51 tenne assediato per molti giorni il santuario, erigendovi piattaforme, macchine, lanciafiamme, baliste e scorpioni per scagliare frecce e proiettili.	51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.
52 Anche i Giudei però costruirono macchine contro le loro macchine e combatterono per molti giorni.	52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.
53 Non essendovi, tuttavia, più viveri nei depositi, perché quello era l'anno sabbatico e perché coloro che da mezzo ai gentili avevano trovato scampo in Giudea avevano consumato il resto delle provviste,	53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.
54 furono lasciati nel santuario soltanto pochi uomini, e gli altri, presi dalla fame, si dispersero ciascuno al suo paese.	54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.
55 Frattanto Lisia venne a sapere che Filippo, incaricato dal re Antioco, ancora vivente, di educare suo figlio Antioco per prepararlo al trono,	55 Meanwhile Philip, whom King Antiochus before his death had appointed to train his son Antiochus forthe throne,
56 era ritornato dalla Persia e dalla Media con le truppe che avevano accompagnato il re e cercava di impadronirsi del potere.	56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.
57 Allora si affrettò a far cenno di voler partire, dicendo al re, ai comandanti dell'esercito e agli uomini: "Noi diminuiamo di giorno in giorno, il cibo è poco e il luogo che teniamo assediato è fortificato, mentre le cure del regno incombono sopra di noi.	57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.
58 Ora, perciò, offriamo la destra a questi uomini e facciamo la pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.	58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.
59 Concediamo loro di poter vivere secondo le loro leggi come per l'innanzi, perché è a causa delle loro leggi che noi abbiamo abolito che essi si sono irritati e hanno fatto tutte queste cose".	59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'
60 Il suo discorso piacque al re e ai prìncipi. Si mandò perciò a trattare la pace con i Giudei e questi accettarono.	60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.
61 Il re e i prìncipi giurarono davanti a loro ed essi, a tali patti, uscirono dalla fortezza.	61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.
62 Però il re, entrato nel monte Sion e visto il luogo fortificato, ruppe il giuramento che aveva fatto e comandò di abbattere il muro all'intorno.	62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.
63 Quindi partì in fretta e fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città. Combatté contro di lui e con la forza occupò la città.	63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.
