1 Il giorno seguente Oloferne diede ordine a tutto il suo esercito e a tutta la moltitudine di coloro che si erano aggiunti a lui come alleati di muovere il campo contro Betulia, occupare le vie d'accesso della montagna e far la guerra contro gl'Israeliti.	1 The following day Holofernes ordered his whole army, and all the allied troops that had come to his support, to move against Bethulia, seize the mountain passes, and engage the Israelites in battle.
2 In quel giorno quindi ogni uomo valido tra loro si mise in marcia. L'esercito di quei guerrieri era di centosettantamila fanti e di dodicimila cavalieri, senza contare gli addetti ai servizi e altri uomini ch'erano con loro a piedi, in numero immenso.	2 That same day all their fighting men went into action. Their forces numbered a hundred and seventy thousand infantry and twelve thousand horsemen, not counting the baggage train or the men who accompanied it on foot-a very great army.
3 Si accamparono nella vallata vicino a Betulia presso la sorgente, estendendosi in profondità sopra Dotain fino a Belbain e in lunghezza da Betulia fino a Kiamon situata dirimpetto a Esdrelon.	3 They encamped at the spring in the valley near Bethulia, and spread out in breadth toward Dothan as far as Balbaim, and in length from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.
4 Quando videro la moltitudine di costoro, gl'Israeliti rimasero profondamente turbati e si dicevano l'un l'altro: "Ora costoro brucheranno la superficie di tutto il paese e né i monti più alti né le valli o le colline potranno resistere al loro peso".	4 When the Israelites saw how many there were, they said to one another in great dismay: "Soon they will devour the whole country. Neither the high mountains nor the valleys and hills can support the mass of them."
5 Ognuno prese le proprie armi e dopo aver acceso fuochi sulle torri, stettero a fare la guardia per tutta quella notte.	5 Yet they all seized their weapons, lighted fires on their bastions, and kept watch throughout the night.
6 Il secondo giorno Oloferne fece uscire tutta la sua cavalleria alla vista degl'Israeliti ch'erano in Betulia,	6 On the second day Holofernes led out all his cavalry in the sight of the Israelites who were in Bethulia.
7 ispezionò le vie d'accesso alla loro città e, ricercate le sorgenti d'acqua, le occupò collocandovi guarnigioni di uomini armati; quindi egli ritornò al suo esercito.	7 He reconnoitered the approaches to their city and located their sources of water; these he seized, stationing armed detachments around them, while he himself returned to his troops.
8 Allora gli si accostarono tutti i capi dei figli di Esaù, tutti i comandanti del popolo di Moab e gli strateghi della costa e gli dissero:	8 All the commanders of the Edomites and all the leaders of the Ammonites, together with the generals of the seacoast, came to Holofernes and said:
9 "Voglia ascoltare il nostro signore una parola, per evitare qualunque guaio al tuo esercito.	9 "Sir, listen to what we have to say, that there may be no losses among your troops.
10 Questo popolo degl'Israeliti non fa affidamento tanto sulle proprie lance, quanto sull'altezza dei monti sui quali essi abitano; certo non è facile scalare le creste dei loro monti.	10 These Israelites do not rely on their spears, but on the height of the mountains where they dwell; it is not easy to reach the summit of their mountains.
11 Pertanto, o signore, non combattere contro di loro, come si usa in una battaglia ordinata, così nessun uomo del tuo esercito cadrà.	11 Therefore, sir, do not attack them in regular formation; thus not a single one of your troops will fall.
12 Rimani nel tuo accampamento e fa' ivi rimanere ogni uomo del tuo esercito; i tuoi servitori s'impadroniscano della sorgente d'acqua, che scaturisce alla radice del monte,	12 Stay in your camp, and spare all your soldiers. Have some of your servants keep control of the source of water that flows out at the base of the mountain,
13 perché di là attingono acqua tutti gli abitanti di Betulia. La sete li consumerà e consegneranno la loro città. Noi e la nostra gente saliremo sulle vicine creste dei monti, ci accamperemo su di esse per sorvegliare che nessun uomo esca dalla città.	13 for that is where the inhabitants of Bethulia get their water. Then thirst will begin to carry them off, and they will surrender their city. Meanwhile, we and our men will go up to the summits of the nearby mountains, and encamp there to guard against anyone's leaving the city.
14 Saranno consunti dalla fame, loro, le loro mogli e i loro figli, e prima che la spada piombi su di loro, giaceranno distesi sulle piazze della loro dimora.	14 They and their wives and children will languish with hunger, and even before the sword strikes them they will be laid low in the streets of their city.
15 Così darai loro un duro contraccambio, perché si sono ribellati e non sono voluti uscire pacificamente incontro alla tua persona".	15 Thus you will render them dire punishment for their rebellion and their refusal to meet you peacefully."
16 Il loro discorso piacque a Oloferne e a tutti i suoi ministri e perciò egli diede ordine di fare come avevano proposto.	16 Their words pleased Holofernes and all his ministers, and he ordered their proposal to be carried out.
17 Si mosse un distaccamento di Moabiti e cinquemila Assiri con essi si accamparono nella vallata occupando i punti d'acqua e le sorgenti degl'Israeliti.	17 Thereupon the Moabites moved camp, together with five thousand Assyrians. They encamped in the valley, and held the water supply and the springs of the Israelites.
18 Dal canto loro i figli di Esaù e gli Ammoniti salirono e si accamparono sulla montagna di fronte a Dotain, donde inviarono parte dei loro uomini verso meridione e ad oriente di fronte a Egrebel, situata vicino a Chus, sul torrente Mochmur. Il resto dell'esercito degli Assiri si accampò nella pianura, ricoprendo tutta la superficie del paese. Le tende e i loro equipaggiamenti, essendo molto ingenti, formavano un accampamento di grande mole.	18 The Edomites and the Ammonites went up and encamped in the mountain region opposite Dothan; and they sent some of their men to the south and to the east opposite Egrebel, near Chusi, which is on Wadi Mochmur. The rest of the Assyrian army was encamped in the plain, covering the whole countryside. Their enormous store of tents and equipment was spread out in profusion everywhere.
19 Gl'Israeliti allora elevarono grida al Signore, loro Dio, con l'animo scoraggiato, poiché tutti i loro nemici li avevano circondati e non era possibile evadere di mezzo a loro.	19 The Israelites cried to the Lord, their God, for they were disheartened, since all their enemies had them surrounded, and there was no way of slipping through their lines.
20 Il campo assiro al completo, fanti, carri e cavalli, proseguì l'accerchiamento per trentaquattro giorni, e a tutti gli abitanti di Betulia si esaurì ogni recipiente d'acqua.	20 The whole Assyrian camp, infantry, chariots, and cavalry, kept them thus surrounded for thirty-four days. All the reservoirs of water failed the inhabitants of Bethulia,
21 Le cisterne si vuotarono e non ebbero acqua da bere a sazietà neppure per un giorno, perché veniva loro distribuita in misura razionata.	21 and the cisterns ran dry, so that on no day did they have enough to drink, but their drinking water was rationed.
22 I loro fanciulli si accasciavano, le donne e i giovani venivano meno per la sete e cadevano nelle piazze della città e agli sbocchi delle porte, non rimanendo in essi alcuna energia.	22 Their children fainted away, and the women and youths were consumed with thirst and were collapsing in the streets and gateways of the city, with no strength left in them.
23 Allora il popolo, giovani, donne e bambini, si radunò intorno a Ozia e ai capi della città; e gridarono ad alta voce dicendo al cospetto di tutti gli anziani:	23 All the people, therefore, including youths, women, and children, went in a crowd to Uzziah and the rulers of the city. They set up a great clamor and said before the elders:
24 "Che Dio sia giudice tra voi e noi, perché ci avete fatto un grave torto, non avendo svolto trattative di pace con gli Assiri.	24 "God judge between you and us! You have done us grave injustice in not making peace with the Assyrians.
25 Ora non c'è nessuno che ci possa aiutare, perché Dio ci ha venduto nelle loro mani, per essere abbattuti davanti a loro dalla sete e da grande rovina.	25 There is no help for us now! Instead, God has sold us into their power by laying us prostrate before them in thirst and utter exhaustion.
26 Ormai chiamateli e consegnate la città intera alla gente di Oloferne e a tutto il suo esercito perché la saccheggino.	26 Therefore, summon them and deliver the whole city as booty to the troops of Holofernes and to all his forces;
27 E' meglio per noi diventare loro preda; saremo certo loro schiavi, ma almeno rimarremo vivi e non vedremo con i nostri occhi la morte dei nostri bambini, né le donne e i figli nostri esalare l'anima.	27 we would be better off to become their prey. We should indeed be made slaves, but at least we should live, and not have to behold our little ones dying before our eyes and our wives and children breathing out their souls.
28 Vi scongiuriamo per il cielo e la terra, per il nostro Dio e Signore dei nostri padri, che ci punisce secondo i nostri peccati e le colpe dei nostri padri, di agire oggi stesso come vi abbiamo detto".	28 We adjure you by heaven and earth, and by our God, the Lord of our forefathers, who is punishing us for our sins and those of our forefathers, to do as we have proposed, this very day."
29 Vi fu allora un gran pianto generale di tutti in mezzo all'assemblea e a gran voce gridarono al Signore Dio.	29 All in the assembly with one accord broke into shrill wailing and loud cries to the Lord their God.
30 Ozia disse loro: "Coraggio, fratelli, resistiamo ancora cinque giorni, durante i quali il Signore, nostro Dio, ci userà di nuovo misericordia; certo egli non ci abbandonerà fino all'ultimo.	30 But Uzziah said to them, "Courage, my brothers! Let us wait five days more for the Lord our God, to show his mercy toward us; he will not utterly forsake us.
31 Se, passati questi giorni, non ci giungerà alcun aiuto, farò come avete proposto".	31 But if those days pass without help coming to us, I will do as you say."
32 Così rimandò il popolo, ciascuno nel suo quartiere; gli uomini ritornarono sulle mura e sulle torri della città, mentre rimandò le donne e i bambini alle loro case, ma nella città si stava in grande costernazione.	32 Then he dispersed the men to their posts, and they returned to the walls and towers of the city; the women and children he sent to their homes. Throughout the city they were in great misery.
