Acts of the Apostles 17

1 Now when they had walked through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they arrived at Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.	1 Après avoir traversé Amphipolis et Apollonie, ils arrivèrent à Thessalonique, où les Juifs avaient unesynagogue.
2 Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,	2 Suivant son habitude, Paul alla les y trouver. Trois sabbats de suite, il discuta avec eux d'après lesEcritures.
3 interpreting and concluding that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead, and that “this is the Jesus Christ, whom I am announcing to you.”	3 Il les leur expliquait, établissant que le Christ devait souffrir et ressusciter des morts, "et le Christ,disait-il, c'est ce Jésus que je vous annonce."
4 And some of them believed and were joined to Paul and Silas, and a great number of these were from the worshipers and the Gentiles, and not a few were noble women.	4 Quelques-uns d'entre eux se laissèrent convaincre et furent gagnés à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu'unemultitude d'adorateurs de Dieu et de Grecs et bon nombre de dames de qualité.
5 But the Jews, being jealous, and joining with certain evildoers among the common men, caused a disturbance, and they stirred up the city. And taking up a position near the house of Jason, they sought to lead them out to the people.	5 Mais les Juifs, pris de jalousie, ramassèrent sur la place quelques mauvais sujets, provoquèrent desattroupements et répandirent le tumulte dans la ville. Ils se présentèrent alors à la maison de Jason, cherchantPaul et Silas pour les produire devant l'assemblée du peuple.
6 And when they had not found them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out: “For these are the ones who have stirred up the city. And they came here,	6 Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les politarques en criant: "Cesgens qui ont révolutionné le monde entier, les voilà maintenant ici,
7 and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”	7 et Jason les reçoit chez lui. Tous ces gens-là contreviennent aux édits de César en affirmant qu'il y aun autre roi, Jésus."
8 And they incited the people. And the rulers of the city, upon hearing these things,	8 Par ces clameurs, ils mirent en émoi la foule et les politarques,
9 and having received an explanation from Jason and the others, released them.	9 qui exigèrent une caution de la part de Jason et des autres avant de les relâcher.
10 Yet truly, the brothers promptly sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. And when they had arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.	10 Les frères firent aussitôt partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Arrivés là, ils se rendirent à lasynagogue des Juifs.
11 But these were more noble than those who were at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all enthusiasm, daily examining the Scriptures to see if these things were so.	11 Or ceux-ci avaient l'âme plus noble que ceux de Thessalonique. Ils accueillirent la parole avec leplus grand empressement. Chaque jour, ils examinaient les Ecritures pour voir si tout était exact.
12 And indeed, many believed among them, as well as not a few among the honorable Gentile men and women.	12 Beaucoup d'entre eux embrassèrent ainsi la foi, de même que, parmi les Grecs, des dames de qualitéet bon nombre d'hommes.
13 Then, when the Jews of Thessalonica had realized that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they went there also, stirring up and disturbing the multitude.	13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul avait annoncé aussi à Bérée la parole deDieu, ils vinrent là encore semer dans la foule l'agitation et le trouble.
14 And then the brothers quickly sent Paul away, so that he might travel by sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.	14 Alors les frères firent tout de suite partir Paul en direction de la mer; quant à Silas et Timothée, ilsrestèrent là.
15 Then those who were leading Paul brought him as far as Athens. And having received an order from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him quickly, they set out.	15 Ceux qui escortaient Paul le conduisirent jusqu'à Athènes et s'en retournèrent ensuite avec l'ordrepour Silas et Timothée de le rejoindre au plus vite.
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred up within him, seeing the city given over to idolatry.	16 Tandis que Paul les attendait à Athènes, son esprit s'échauffait en lui au spectacle de cette villeremplie d'idoles.
17 And so, he was disputing with the Jews in the synagogue, and with the worshipers, and in public places, throughout each day, with whomever was there.	17 Il s'entretenait donc à la synagogue avec des Juifs et ceux qui adoraient Dieu, et sur l'agora, tous lesjours, avec les passants.
18 Now certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were arguing with him. And some were saying, “What does this sower of the Word want to say?” Yet others were saying, “He seems to be an announcer for new demons.” For he was announcing to them Jesus and the Resurrection.	18 Il y avait même des philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens qui l'abordaient. Les uns disaient: "Que peutbien vouloir dire ce perroquet?" D'autres: "On dirait un prêcheur de divinités étrangères", parce qu'il annonçaitJésus et la résurrection.
19 And apprehending him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: “Are we able to know what this new doctrine is, about which you speak?	19 Ils le prirent alors avec eux et le menèrent devant l'Aréopage en disant: "Pourrions-nous savoirquelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?
20 For you bring certain new ideas to our ears. And so we would like to know what these things mean.”	20 Car ce sont d'étranges propos que tu nous fais entendre. Nous voudrions donc savoir ce que celaveut dire."
21 (Now all the Athenians, and arriving visitors, were occupying themselves with nothing other than speaking or hearing various new ideas.)	21 Tous les Athéniens en effet et les étrangers qui résidaient parmi eux n'avaient d'autre passe-tempsque de dire ou écouter les dernières nouveautés.
22 But Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are rather superstitious.	22 Debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, Paul dit alors: "Athéniens, à tous égards vous êtes, je le vois, lesplus religieux des hommes.
23 For as I was passing by and noticing your idols, I also found an altar, on which was written: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this is what I am preaching to you:	23 Parcourant en effet votre ville et considérant vos monuments sacrés, j'ai trouvé jusqu'à un autelavec l'inscription: au dieu inconnu. Eh bien! ce que vous adorez sans le connaître, je viens, moi, vous l'annoncer.
24 the God who made the world and all that is in it, the One who is the Lord of heaven and earth, who does not live in temples made with hands.	24 "Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qui s'y trouve, lui, le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habitepas dans des temples faits de main d'homme.
25 Neither is he served by the hands of men, as if in need of anything, since it is he who gives to all things life and breath and all else.	25 Il n'est pas non plus servi par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, luiqui donne à tous vie, souffle et toutes choses.
26 And he has made, out of one, every family of man: to live upon the face of the entire earth, determining the appointed seasons and the limits of their habitation,	26 Si d'un principe unique il a fait tout le genre humain pour qu'il habite sur toute la face de la terre;s'il a fixé des temps déterminés et les limites de l'habitat des hommes,
27 so as to seek God, if perhaps they may consider him or find him, though he is not far from each one of us.	27 c'était afin qu'ils cherchent la divinité pour l'atteindre, si possible, comme à tâtons et la trouver;aussi bien n'est-elle pas loin de chacun de nous.
28 ‘For in him we live, and move, and exist.’ Just as some of your own poets have said. ‘For we are also of his family.’	28 C'est en elle en effet que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être. Ainsi d'ailleurs l'ont dit certainsdes vôtres: Car nous sommes aussi de sa race.
29 Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.	29 "Que si nous sommes de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas penser que la divinité soit semblable àde l'or, de l'argent ou de la pierre, travaillés par l'art et le génie de l'homme.
30 And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.	30 "Or voici que, fermant les yeux sur les temps de l'ignorance, Dieu fait maintenant savoir auxhommes d'avoir tous et partout à se repentir,
31 For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.”	31 parce qu'il a fixé un jour pour juger l'univers avec justice, par un homme qu'il y a destiné, offrant àtous une garantie en le ressuscitant des morts."
32 And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, “We will listen to you about this again.”	32 A ces mots de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquaient, les autres disaient: "Nous t'entendronslà-dessus une autre fois."
33 So Paul departed from their midst.	33 C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.
34 Yet truly, certain men, adhering to him, did believe. Among these were also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.	34 Quelques hommes cependant s'attachèrent à lui et embrassèrent la foi. Denys l'Aréopagite fut dunombre. Il y eut aussi une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.
