Deuteronomy 8

1 “All the commandments which I am entrusting to you this day, take care to observe them diligently, so that you may live and be multiplied, and so that, upon entering, you may possess the land, about which the Lord swore to your fathers.	1 Abbiate cura di mettere in pratica tutti i comandi che oggi vi do, perché viviate, diveniate numerosi ed entriate in possesso della terra che il Signore ha giurato di dare ai vostri padri.
2 And you shall remember the entire journey along which the Lord your God led you, for forty years through the desert, to afflict you, and to test you, and to make known the things that were turning in your soul, whether or not you would keep his commandments.	2 Ricòrdati di tutto il cammino che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha fatto percorrere in questi quarant’anni nel deserto, per umiliarti e metterti alla prova, per sapere quello che avevi nel cuore, se tu avresti osservato o no i suoi comandi.
3 He afflicted you with need, and he gave you Manna as your food, which neither you nor your fathers knew, so as to reveal to you that it is not by bread alone that man lives, but by every word that goes forth from the mouth of God.	3 Egli dunque ti ha umiliato, ti ha fatto provare la fame, poi ti ha nutrito di manna, che tu non conoscevi e che i tuoi padri non avevano mai conosciuto, per farti capire che l’uomo non vive soltanto di pane, ma che l’uomo vive di quanto esce dalla bocca del Signore.
4 Your garment, with which you were covered, has by no means decayed due to age, and your foot has not been worn down, even to this fortieth year,	4 Il tuo mantello non ti si è logorato addosso e il tuo piede non si è gonfiato durante questi quarant’anni.
5 so that you would recognize in your heart that, just as a man educates his son, so has the Lord your God educated you.	5 Riconosci dunque in cuor tuo che, come un uomo corregge il figlio, così il Signore, tuo Dio, corregge te.
6 So may you keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in his ways, and fear him.	6 Osserva i comandi del Signore, tuo Dio, camminando nelle sue vie e temendolo,
7 For the Lord your God will lead you into a good land: a land of brooks and waters and fountains, in which deep rivers burst forth from its plains and mountains,	7 perché il Signore, tuo Dio, sta per farti entrare in una buona terra: terra di torrenti, di fonti e di acque sotterranee, che scaturiscono nella pianura e sulla montagna;
8 a land of crops, barley, and vineyards, in which fig and pomegranate and olive trees spring up, a land of oil and honey.	8 terra di frumento, di orzo, di viti, di fichi e di melograni; terra di ulivi, di olio e di miele;
9 In that place, without any need, you shall eat your bread and enjoy an abundance of all things: where the stones are like iron, and where ore for brass is dug out of its mountains.	9 terra dove non mangerai con scarsità il pane, dove non ti mancherà nulla; terra dove le pietre sono ferro e dai cui monti scaverai il rame.
10 So then, when you have eaten and been satisfied, you should bless the Lord your God for the excellent land which he has given to you.	10 Mangerai, sarai sazio e benedirai il Signore, tuo Dio, a causa della buona terra che ti avrà dato.
11 Be observant and cautious, lest at sometime you may forget the Lord your God, and neglect his commandments, as well as the judgments and ceremonies, which I instruct to you this day.	11 Guàrdati bene dal dimenticare il Signore, tuo Dio, così da non osservare i suoi comandi, le sue norme e le sue leggi che oggi io ti prescrivo.
12 Otherwise, after you have eaten and been satisfied, and have built beautiful houses and have lived in them,	12 Quando avrai mangiato e ti sarai saziato, quando avrai costruito belle case e vi avrai abitato,
13 and have obtained herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep, and a plentitude of gold and silver and all things,	13 quando avrai visto il tuo bestiame grosso e minuto moltiplicarsi, accrescersi il tuo argento e il tuo oro e abbondare ogni tua cosa,
14 your heart might be lifted up, and you might not remember the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude,	14 il tuo cuore non si inorgoglisca in modo da dimenticare il Signore, tuo Dio, che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d’Egitto, dalla condizione servile;
15 and who was your leader in the great and terrible wilderness, in which there was the serpent with a burning breath, and the scorpion, and the snake of thirst, and no waters at all. He led streams out of the hardest rock,	15 che ti ha condotto per questo deserto grande e spaventoso, luogo di serpenti velenosi e di scorpioni, terra assetata, senz’acqua; che ha fatto sgorgare per te l’acqua dalla roccia durissima;
16 and he nourished you in the wilderness with Manna, which your fathers had not known. And after he had afflicted and tested you, in the very end, he took pity on you.	16 che nel deserto ti ha nutrito di manna sconosciuta ai tuoi padri, per umiliarti e per provarti, per farti felice nel tuo avvenire.
17 Otherwise, you might say in your heart: ‘My own strength, and the power of my own hand, have brought forth all these things for me.’	17 Guàrdati dunque dal dire nel tuo cuore: “La mia forza e la potenza della mia mano mi hanno acquistato queste ricchezze”.
18 But remember the Lord your God, that he himself has provided you with strength, so that he may fulfill his covenant, about which he swore to your fathers, just as the present day reveals.	18 Ricòrdati invece del Signore, tuo Dio, perché egli ti dà la forza per acquistare ricchezze, al fine di mantenere, come fa oggi, l’alleanza che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.
19 But if you forget the Lord your God, so that you follow foreign gods, and serve and adore them: behold, I now foretell to you that you shall utterly perish.	19 Ma se tu dimenticherai il Signore, tuo Dio, e seguirai altri dèi e li servirai e ti prostrerai davanti a loro, io attesto oggi contro di voi che certo perirete!
20 Just like the nations, which the Lord destroyed upon your arrival, so shall you also perish, if you have been disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God.”	20 Perirete come le nazioni che il Signore sta per far perire davanti a voi, se non avrete dato ascolto alla voce del Signore, vostro Dio.
