Then, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,1 Era l'anno quindicesimo del regno di Tiberio Cesare: Ponzio Pilato governava la Giudea, Erode era tetrarca della Galilea e suo fratello Filippo dell'Iturea e della Traconitide; Lisania governava la provincia dell'Abilene,
under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas: the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.2 mentre Anna e Caifa erano i sommi sacerdoti. In quel tempo la parola di Dio fu rivolta a Giovanni, figlio di Zaccaria, nel deserto.
And he went into the entire region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,3 Egli allora percorse tutta la regione del Giordano, predicando un battesimo di penitenza per il perdono dei peccati.
just as it has been written in the book of the sermons of the prophet Isaiah: “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.4 Si realizzava così ciò che è scritto nel libro degli oracoli del profeta Isaia: Ecco, una voce risuona nel deserto: Preparate la strada per il Signore, spianate i suoi sentieri!
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And what is crooked shall be made straight. And the rough paths shall be made into level ways.5 Le valli siano riempite, le montagne e le colline siano abbassate; le vie tortuose siano raddrizzate, i luoghi impervi appianati.
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”6 Ogni uomo vedrà la salvezza di Dio.
Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: “You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath?7 Alle folle che accorrevano da lui per farsi battezzare, egli diceva: "Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a sfuggire all'ira ormai vicina?
So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.8 Dimostrate piuttosto con i fatti che vi siete veramente convertiti e non cominciate a dire tra di voi: "Noi come padre abbiamo Abramo". Io vi dico che Dio è capace di suscitare veri figli ad Abramo anche da queste pietre.
For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.”9 La scure è già posta alla radice degli alberi: ogni albero che non fa frutti buoni, sarà tagliato e gettato nel fuoco".
And the crowed was questioning him, saying, “What then should we do?”10 La folla così lo interrogava: "Che cosa dobbiamo fare?".
But in response, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.”11 Egli rispondeva: "Chi ha due tuniche ne dia una a chi non ne ha; e chi ha del cibo faccia lo stesso".
Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”12 Vennero anche alcuni pubblicani per farsi battezzare. Gli domandarono: "Maestro, che cosa dobbiamo fare?".
But he said to them, “You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”13 Giovanni rispose: "Non esigete niente di più di quanto vi è stato fissato".
Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what should we do?” And he said to them: “You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”14 Anche alcuni soldati lo interrogavano: "E noi, che cosa dobbiamo fare?". Rispose: "Non fate violenza a nessuno, non denunciate il falso, accontentatevi della vostra paga".
Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ.15 L'attesa del popolo intanto cresceva e tutti si domandavano in cuor loro se Giovanni fosse il Messia.
John responded by saying to everyone: “Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire.16 Giovanni rispose: "Io vi battezzo con acqua, ma viene uno che è più forte di me, al quale non sono degno neppure di sciogliere i lacci dei sandali. Egli vi battezzerà in Spirito Santo e fuoco.
His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”17 Egli tiene in mano il ventilabro per separare il frumento dalla pula; raccoglierà il grano nel granaio, ma la paglia la brucerà con un fuoco inestinguibile".
Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people.18 Con queste e altre esortazioni annunziava al popolo la salvezza.
But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,19 Ma il tetrarca Erode, che Giovanni aveva biasimato perché aveva preso Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello, e per altre scelleratezze,
added this also, above all else: that he confined John to prison.20 aggiunse un altro crimine a quelli già commessi: fece imprigionare Giovanni.
Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened.21 Tutto il popolo si faceva battezzare, e fu battezzato anche Gesù. E mentre stava in preghiera, il cielo si aprì
And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son. In you, I am well pleased.”22 e lo Spirito Santo discese su di lui, in forma corporea, come colomba. E vi fu una voce che venne dal cielo: "Tu sei il Figlio mio amatissimo, in te io mi compiaccio".
