Ezekiel 16

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:	1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows,
2 “Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations.	2 'Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her loathsome practices!
3 And you shall say: Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your root and your lineage is from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite, and your mother was a Cethite.	3 Say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: By origin and birth you belong to the land of Canaan. Your fatherwas an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
4 And when you were born, on the day of your nativity, your umbilical cord was not cut, and you were not washed with water for health, nor salted with salt, nor wrapped with cloths.	4 At birth, the very day you were born, there was no one to cut your navel-string, or wash you in water toclean you, or rub you with salt, or wrap you in swaddling clothes.
5 No eye took pity on you, so as to do even one of these things to you, out of compassion for you. Instead, you were cast upon the face of the earth, in the abjection of your soul, on the day when you were born.	5 No one looked at you with pity enough to do any of these things out of sympathy for you. You wereexposed in the open fields in your own dirt on the day you were born.
6 But, passing by you, I saw that you were wallowing in your own blood. And I said to you, when you were in your blood: ‘Live.’ I tell you that I said to you, in your blood: ‘Live.’	6 "I saw you kicking on the ground in your blood as I was passing, and I said to you as you lay in yourblood: Live!
7 I multiplied you like the seedling of the field. And you were multiplied and became great, and you advanced and arrived at the ornament of a woman. Your breasts rose up, and your hair grew. And you were naked and full of shame.	7 and I made you grow like the grass of the fields. You developed, you grew, you reached marriageableage. Your breasts became firm and your hair grew richly, but you were stark naked.
8 And I passed by you and saw you. And behold, your time was the time of lovers. And I spread my garment over you, and I covered your disgrace. And I swore to you, and I entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God, and you became mine.	8 Then I saw you as I was passing. Your time had come, the time for love. I spread my cloak over youand covered your nakedness; I gave you my oath, I made a covenant with you -- declares the Lord Yahweh --and you became mine.
9 And I washed you with water, and I cleansed you of your blood. And I anointed you with oil.	9 I bathed you in water, I washed the blood off you, I anointed you with oil.
10 And I covered you with embroidery, and I put violet shoes upon you, and I wrapped you in fine linen, and I clothed you with delicate garments.	10 I gave you embroidered dresses, fine leather shoes, a linen headband and a cloak of silk.
11 I adorned you with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon your hands and a necklace around your neck.	11 I loaded you with jewels, gave you bracelets for your wrists and a necklace for your throat.
12 And I put gold upon your face, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown upon your head.	12 I gave you nose-ring and earrings; I put a beautiful diadem on your head.
13 And you were adorned with gold and silver, and you were clothed in fine linen, woven with many colors. You ate fine flour, and honey, and oil. And you became very beautiful. And you advanced to royal power.	13 You were loaded with gold and silver and dressed in linen and silk and brocade. Your food was thefinest flour, honey and oil. You grew more and more beautiful; and you rose to be queen.
14 And your renown went forth among the Gentiles, because of your beauty. For you were perfected by my beauty, which I had placed upon you, says the Lord God.	14 The fame of your beauty spread through the nations, since it was perfect, because I had clothed youwith my own splendour -- declares the Lord Yahweh.
15 But, having confidence in your own beauty, you fornicated in your fame. And you presented your fornication to every passer-by, so as to become his.	15 "But you became infatuated with your own beauty and used your fame to play the whore, lavishingyour debauchery on al comers.
16 And taking from your garments, you made for yourself exalted things, having sewed together disparate pieces. And you fornicated upon them, in a way that has not been done before, nor will be in the future.	16 You took some of your clothes to make for yourself high places bright with colours and there youplayed the whore.
17 And you took your beautiful items, made of my gold and my silver, which I gave to you, and you made for yourself images of men, and you fornicated with them.	17 You also took your jewel ery, made with my gold and silver which I had given you, and made yourselfmale images to serve your whorings.
18 And you used your multicolored vestments to cover these things. And you placed my oil and my incense before them.	18 You took your embroidered clothes and used these to dress them up, and you offered them my oiland my incense.
19 And my bread, which I gave to you, the fine flour, and the oil, and the honey, by which I nourished you, you placed in their sight as a sweet fragrance. And so it was done, says the Lord God.	19 And the bread I gave you, the finest flour, the oil and honey with which I fed you, you offered them asa pleasing smel . "What is more -- declares the Lord Yahweh-
20 And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore for me, and you immolated them to be devoured. Is your fornication a small matter?	20 you took the sons and daughters you had borne me and sacrificed them as food to the images. Wasnot your whoring enough in itself,
21 You have immolated my sons, and you have consecrated and delivered my sons to them.	21 for you to slaughter my children and hand them over to be burnt in their honour?
22 And after all your abominations and fornications, you have not remembered the days of your youth, when you were naked and full of shame, wallowing in your own blood.	22 And in al your loathsome practices and your whorings you never cal ed your early days to mind,when you were stark naked, kicking on the ground in your own blood.
23 And it happened that, after all your wickedness, (woe, woe to you, says the Lord God)	23 "To crown your wickedness -- disaster upon you, disaster! declares the Lord Yahweh-
24 you built for yourself a brothel, and you made for yourself a place of prostitution in every street.	24 you built yourself a mound and made yourself a high place in every open space.
25 At the head of every way, you set up a banner of your prostitution. And you caused your beauty to become abominable. And you distributed your feet to every passer-by. And you multiplied your fornications.	25 At the entry to every al ey you made yourself a high place, defiling your beauty and opening your legsto al comers in countless acts of fornication.
26 And you fornicated with the sons of Egypt, your neighbors, who have large bodies. And you multiplied your fornications, so as to provoke me.	26 You have also fornicated with your big-membered neighbours, the Egyptians, provoking my angerwith further acts of fornication.
27 Behold, I will extend my hand over you, and I will take away your justification. And I will give you to the souls of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your wicked way.	27 So now I have raised my hand against you, I have cut down on your food, I have put you at themercy of your enemies, the Philistine women, who blush at your lewd behaviour.
28 You also fornicated with the sons of the Assyrians, for you were not yet done. And after you fornicated, even then, you were not satisfied.	28 Stil unsatisfied, you prostituted yourself to the Assyrians; you played the whore with them, but werenot satisfied even then.
29 And you multiplied your fornications in the land of Canaan with the Chaldeans. And even then, you were not satisfied.	29 You committed further acts of fornication in the country of merchants, with the Chaldaeans, andthese did not satisfy you either.
30 With what can I cleanse your heart, says the Lord God, since you do all these things, the works of a woman who is a shameless prostitute?	30 "How simple-minded you are!-declares the Lord Yahweh -- for although you do all the things that aprofessional prostitute would,
31 For you have built your brothel at the head of every way, and you have made your exalted place on every street. And you have not even been like a choosy prostitute, increasing her price,	31 in building a mound and making yourself a high place in every street, you do not act like a properprostitute because you disdain to take a fee.
32 but instead like a woman who is an adulteress, who prefers strangers to her own husband.	32 An adulteress welcomes strangers instead of her husband.
33 Wages are given to all prostitutes. But you have given wages to all your lovers, and you have given gifts to them, so that they would enter to you from every side, in order to fornicate with you.	33 Al prostitutes accept presents, but you give presents to all your lovers, you bribe them to come fromal over the place to fornicate with you!
34 And it is done with you, in your fornications, contrary to the custom of women, and even after you, there will be no such fornication. For in as much as you have given payment, and not taken payment, what has been done in you is the contrary.”	34 In fornicating, you are the opposite of other women, since no one runs after you to fornicate with you;since you give the fee and do not get one, you are the very opposite!
35 Because of this, O harlot, listen to the word of the Lord.	35 "Very wel , whore, hear the word of Yahweh!
36 Thus says the Lord God: “Because your money has been poured out, and your disgrace has been uncovered, in your fornications with your lovers and with the idols of your abominations, in the blood of your sons, whom you gave to them:	36 The Lord Yahweh says this: For having squandered your money and let yourself be seen nakedwhile whoring with your lovers and all the foul idols of your loathsome practices and for giving them yourchildren's blood-
37 Behold, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have united, and all those whom you have loved, together with all those whom you have hated. And I will gather them together against you on every side. And I will uncover your disgrace before them, and they will see all your indecency.	37 for al this, I shal assemble all the lovers to whom you have given pleasure, al the ones you likedand also al the ones you disliked; yes, I shal assemble them round you and strip you naked in front of them,and let them see you naked from head to foot.
38 And I will judge you with the judgment of adulteresses and of those who shed blood. And I will give you over to blood, in fury and in zeal.	38 I shal pass on you the sentence that adulteresses and murderesses receive; I shall hand you over totheir jealous fury;
39 And I will deliver you into their hands. And they will destroy your brothel and demolish your place of prostitution. And they will strip you of your vestments. And they will take away the ornaments of your beauty. And they will leave you behind, naked and full of disgrace.	39 I shal hand you over to them; they wil destroy your mound and pul down your high place; they wiltear off your clothes, take away your jewels and leave you stark naked.
40 And they will lead over you a multitude. And they will stone you with stones, and massacre you with their swords.	40 Then they wil call an assembly of citizens to deal with you, who wil stone you to death and hack youto pieces with their swords,
41 And they will burn up your houses with fire, and they will carry out judgments against you in the sight of many women. And you will cease from fornication, and no longer give payment.	41 and burn down your premises and execute justice on you, while many other women look on; and Ishall put an end to your whoring: no more paid lovers for you!
42 And my indignation will be quieted in you. And my zeal will be taken from you. And I will rest, and no longer be angry.	42 Once my fury is exhausted with you, then my jealousy wil leave you; I shal be calm and not angryany more.
43 For you have not remembered the days of your youth, and you have provoked me in all these things. Because of this, I also have delivered all your ways upon your head, says the Lord God, but I have not acted in accord with your wickedness in all your abominations.	43 Since you never cal ed to mind your early days and have done nothing but provoke me, now I in myturn shall bring your conduct down on your own head -- declares the Lord Yahweh! "Have you not added thislewd behaviour to your other loathsome practices?
44 Behold, all who speak a common proverb will take this up against you, saying: ‘Like the mother, so also is her daughter.’	44 So now al dealers in proverbs will apply this one to you: Like mother, like daughter.
45 You are your mother’s daughter, for she cast away her husband and her children. And you are the sister of your sisters, for they cast away their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Cethite, and your father was an Amorite.	45 Yes; you are a true daughter of your mother, who hated her husband and her children; you are a truesister of your sisters, who hated their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father anAmorite.
46 And your older sister is Samaria, she and her daughters are those who live to your left. But your younger sister, who lives to your right, is Sodom and her daughters.	46 Your elder sister is Samaria, who lives to the north of you with her daughters. Your younger sister isSodom, who lives to the south of you with her daughters.
47 But neither have you walked in their ways. For you have done only a little less compared to their wickedness. You have acted almost more wickedly, in all your ways, than they have acted.	47 You never failed to imitate their behaviour and copy their loathsome practices, and soon yourbehaviour was more corrupt than theirs was.
48 As I live, says the Lord God, your sister Sodom herself, and her daughters, have not done as you and your daughters have done.	48 As I live -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you andyour daughters have done.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of Sodom, your sister: arrogance, indulgence in bread and abundance, and the idleness of her and her daughters; and they did not reach out their hand to the needy and the poor.	49 The crime of your sister Sodom was pride, gluttony, calm complacency; such were hers and herdaughters' crimes. They never helped the poor and needy;
50 And they were exalted, and they committed abominations before me. And so I took them away, just as you have seen.	50 they were proud, and engaged in loathsome practices before me, and so I swept them away as youhave seen.
51 But Samaria has not committed even half of your sins. For you have exceeded them in your wickedness, and you have justified your sisters by all your abominations, which you have wrought.	51 And yet Samaria never committed half the crimes that you have. "You have done more loathsomethings than they have. By al your loathsome practices you have made your sisters seem innocent,
52 Therefore, you also bear your shame, for you have exceeded your sisters with your sins, acting more wickedly than they did. So they have been justified above you. By this also, you are confounded, and you bear your disgrace, for you have justified your sisters.	52 and now you bear the shame of which you have freed your sisters; since the sins which you havecommitted are more revolting than theirs, they are more upright than you are. So now, bear the disgrace andshame of having put your sisters in the right.
53 But I will convert and restore them, by converting Sodom with her daughters, and by converting Samaria and her daughters. And I will convert your return in their midst.	53 "I shal restore their fortunes, I shal restore Sodom and her daughters, I shal re- store Samaria andher daughters, and then I shal restore your fortune with theirs,
54 So may you bear your disgrace and be confounded over all that you have done, consoling them.	54 so that you can bear your shame and disgrace for al you have done, and so console them.
55 And your sister Sodom and her daughters will return to their ancient state. And Samaria and her daughters will return to their ancient state. And you and your daughters will be returned to your ancient state.	55 When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, are restored to what they were, and Samaria and herdaughters are restored to what they were, then you too and your daughters wil be restored to what you were.
56 Your sister Sodom was not heard from your mouth, then, in the day of your pride,	56 Did you not gloat over your sister Sodom when you were so proud,
57 before your malice was revealed, as it is at this time, with the reproach of the daughters of Syria and of all the daughters of Palestine, who surround you, who encircle you on every side.	57 before you were stripped naked? Like her, you are now the laughing-stock of the women of Edom, ofal the women round, of the women of Philistia, who pour out their contempt on you.
58 You have borne your wickedness and your disgrace, says the Lord God.”	58 You have brought this on yourself, with your lewdness and your loathsome practices -- declares theLord Yahweh.
59 For thus says the Lord God: “I will act toward you, just as you have despised the oath, so that you would make void the covenant.	59 "For the Lord Yahweh says this: I shal treat you as you have deserved for making light of an oathand breaking a covenant,
60 And I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth. And I will raise up for you an everlasting covenant.	60 but I shal remember my covenant with you when you were a girl and shal conclude a covenant withyou that wil last for ever.
61 And you shall remember your ways and be confounded, when you will have received your sisters, your elder with your younger. And I will give them to you as daughters, but not by your covenant.	61 And you for your part wil remember your behaviour and feel ashamed of it when you receive yourelder and younger sisters and I make them your daughters, although this is not included in my covenant withyou.
62 And I will raise up my covenant with you. And you shall know that I am the Lord.	62 I shal renew my covenant with you; and you wil know that I am Yahweh,
63 So may you remember and be confounded. And it will no longer be for you to open your mouth, because of your shame, when I will have been pacified toward you over all that you have done, says the Lord God.”	63 and so remember and feel ashamed and in your confusion be reduced to silence, when I forgive youfor everything you have done -- declares the Lord Yahweh." '
