1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed his day,	1 Allora Giobbe aprì la bocca e maledisse il suo giorno.
2 and this is what he said:	2 Prese a dire:
3 May the day perish on which I was born, and the night, in which it was said, “A man has been conceived.”	3 «Perisca il giorno in cui nacqui e la notte in cui si disse: “È stato concepito un maschio!”.
4 May that day be turned into darkness, may God not seek it from above, and may light not illuminate it.	4 Quel giorno divenga tenebra, non se ne curi Dio dall’alto, né brilli mai su di esso la luce.
5 Let darkness and the shadow of death obscure it, let a fog overtake it, and let it be enveloped in bitterness.	5 Lo rivendichino la tenebra e l’ombra della morte, gli si stenda sopra una nube e lo renda spaventoso l’oscurarsi del giorno!
6 Let a whirlwind of darkness take hold of that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.	6 Quella notte se la prenda il buio, non si aggiunga ai giorni dell’anno, non entri nel conto dei mesi.
7 May that night be alone and unworthy of praise.	7 Ecco, quella notte sia sterile, e non entri giubilo in essa.
8 May they curse it, who curse the day, who are prepared to awaken a leviathan.	8 La maledicano quelli che imprecano il giorno, che sono pronti a evocare Leviatàn.
9 Let the stars be concealed with its darkness. Let it expect light, and not see it, nor the rising of the dawn in the East.	9 Si oscurino le stelle della sua alba, aspetti la luce e non venga né veda le palpebre dell’aurora,
10 For it did not close the doors of the womb that bore me, nor take away evils from my eyes.	10 poiché non mi chiuse il varco del grembo materno, e non nascose l’affanno agli occhi miei!
11 Why did I not die in the womb? Having left the womb, why did I not immediately perish?	11 Perché non sono morto fin dal seno di mia madre e non spirai appena uscito dal grembo?
12 Why was I received upon the knees? Why was I suckled at the breasts?	12 Perché due ginocchia mi hanno accolto, e due mammelle mi allattarono?
13 For by now, I should have been sleeping silently, and taking rest in my sleep	13 Così, ora giacerei e avrei pace, dormirei e troverei riposo
14 with the kings and consuls of the earth, who build themselves solitudes,	14 con i re e i governanti della terra, che ricostruiscono per sé le rovine,
15 either with princes, who possess gold and fill their houses with silver,	15 e con i prìncipi, che posseggono oro e riempiono le case d’argento.
16 or, like a hidden miscarriage, I should not have continued, just like those who, being conceived, have not seen the light.	16 Oppure, come aborto nascosto, più non sarei, o come i bambini che non hanno visto la luce.
17 There the impious cease from rebellion, and there the wearied in strength take rest.	17 Là i malvagi cessano di agitarsi, e chi è sfinito trova riposo.
18 And at such times, having been bound together without difficulty, they have not heard the voice of the bailiff.	18 Anche i prigionieri hanno pace, non odono più la voce dell’aguzzino.
19 The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.	19 Il piccolo e il grande là sono uguali, e lo schiavo è libero dai suoi padroni.
20 Why is light given to the miserable, and life to those who are in bitterness of soul,	20 Perché dare la luce a un infelice e la vita a chi ha amarezza nel cuore,
21 who expect death, and it does not arrive, like those who dig for treasure	21 a quelli che aspettano la morte e non viene, che la cercano più di un tesoro,
22 and who rejoice greatly when they have found the grave,	22 che godono fino a esultare e gioiscono quando trovano una tomba,
23 to a man whose way is hidden and whom God has surrounded with darkness?	23 a un uomo, la cui via è nascosta e che Dio ha sbarrato da ogni parte?
24 Before I eat, I sigh; and like overflowing waters, so is my howl,	24 Perché al posto del pane viene la mia sofferenza e si riversa come acqua il mio grido,
25 for the terror that I feared has happened to me, and so has the dread befallen me.	25 perché ciò che temevo mi è sopraggiunto, quello che mi spaventava è venuto su di me.
26 Have I not remained hidden? Have I not kept silence? Have I not remained calm? Yet indignation has overcome me.	26 Non ho tranquillità, non ho requie, non ho riposo ed è venuto il tormento!».
