Then a long struggle occurred between the house of Saul and the house of David, with David prospering and growing ever stronger, but the house of Saul decreasing daily.1 Or è fatto lungo combattimento tra la casa di Saul e la casa di David, tuttavia David crescendo e fortificandosi, e la casa di Saul tutto dì iscemando.
And sons were born to David in Hebron. And his firstborn son was Amnon, from Ahinoam the Jezreelite.2 E nacquero a David in Ebron figliuoli: e fue il suo primogenito Amnon di Achinoa di Iezrael.
And after him, there was Chileab, from Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel. Then the third was Absalom, the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur.3 E dopo Cheleab di Abigail moglie di Nabal di Carmelo: il terzo Absalom figliuolo di Maaca figliuola di Tolmai re di Gessur.
Then the fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith. And the fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital.4 Il quarto Adonias figliuolo di Aggit: il quinto Safacia figliuolo di Abital.
Also, the sixth was Ithream, from Eglah, the wife of David. These were born to David at Hebron.5 Il sesto Ietraam di Egla moglie di David: questi nacquero a David in Ebron.
Then, while there was a battle between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner, the son of Ner, was reigning over the house of Saul.6 Ed essendo guerra tra la casa di Saul e la casa di David, Abner figliuolo di Ner reggeva la casa di Saul.
Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. And Ishbosheth said to Abner,7 Ed era stato Abner ad una concubina di Saul, la quale avea nome Resfa figliuola di Aia. E disse Isboset ad Abner:
“Why did you enter to the concubine of my father?” But he, being exceedingly angry at the words of Ishbosheth, said: “Am I the head of a dog against Judah this day? I have shown mercy to the house of Saul, your father, and to his brothers and friends. And I have not delivered you into the hands of David. And yet today you have sought me, so that you might rebuke me over a woman?8 Perchè se' tu andato alla concubina del mio padre? Il quale, irato troppo per le parole di Isboset, disse sono io capo di cane contro a Giuda oggi? Io stesso m' hoe fatto questo, facendo misericordia con la casa di Saul tuo padre e prossimi, e colli fratelli suoi, e non t' hoe dato nelle mani di David; e tu hai richiesto oggi in me, reprendendomi d'una femina?
May God do these things to Abner, and may he add these other things, if, in the same way that the Lord swore to David, I do not do so with him:9 Questo faccia Dio ad Abner, e questo aggiugna a lui, se io non farò con David, come gli giurò il Signore (alla casa sua),
that the kingdom be transferred from the house of Saul, and that the throne of David be elevated over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”10 che sia traslatato il regno dalla casa di Saul, e sia levata alta la sedia di David sopra Israel e sopra Giuda, da Dan insino a Bersebee.
And he was not able to respond anything to him, because he was in fear of him.11 E non potette rispondere alcuna cosa, che il temea.
Therefore, Abner sent messengers to David for himself, saying, “Whose is the land?” and so that they would say, “Make a friendship with me, and my hand will be with you, and I will lead back all of Israel to you.”12 E mandò Abner messaggi a David per sè, dicendo: di cui è la terra? e che dicessero: fa meco amistà, e sarà la mia mano teco, e raduneroe a te tutto Israel.
And he said: “It is best. I will make a friendship with you. But one thing I ask of you, saying: You shall not see my face before you bring Michal, the daughter of Saul. And in this way, you shall come, and see me.”13 Ed egli respuose: ottimamente; farò teco amistà, ma una cosa ti comando, che tu non veggi prima la faccia mia, che tu non meni Micol figliuola di Saul; così verrai, e vedera'mi.
Then David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, saying, “Restore my wife Michal, whom I espoused to myself for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”14 E mandò David messaggi ad Isboset, dicendo: rendimi la mia moglie Micol, la quale io sposai per cento membri virili di Filistei.
Therefore, Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband Paltiel, the son of Laish.15 E Isboset mandò, e tolsela dal suo marito Falsiel figliuolo di Lais.
And her husband was following her, weeping, as far as Bahurim. And Abner said to him, “Go and return.” And he returned.16 E andava dopo lei il suo marito, piangendo, insino a Baurim. E disse a lui Abner: va, ritòrnati. Ed egli si ritornò.
Likewise, Abner sent word to the elders of Israel, saying: “As much yesterday as the day before, you were seeking David, so that he might reign over you.17 E Abner favellò agli antichi maggiori d' Israel, e disse: ieri e l' altro cercavate di volere David, che regnasse sopra voi.
Therefore, accomplish it now. For the Lord has spoken to David, saying: ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’ ”18 Ora il fate, perchè Iddio ha favellato a David, dicendo: in mano del mio servo David salvaroe il popolo d'Israel delle mani de' Filistei, e di tutti i suoi nemici.
Then Abner also spoke to Benjamin. And he went away, so that he might speak to David in Hebron all that would be pleasing to Israel and to all of Benjamin.19 E anche Abner favellò a Beniamin; e andò per favellare a David in Ebron tutto quello che piacea a Israel e a tutto Beniamin.
And he went to David in Hebron with twenty men. And David made a feast for Abner, and for his men who had arrived with him.20 E venne in Ebron a David con XX uomini. E David fece convito ad Abner e a quelli ch' erano andati con lui.
And Abner said to David, “I will rise up, so that I may gather all of Israel to you, my lord the king, and so that I may enter into a pact with you, and so that you may reign over all, just as your soul desires.” Then, when David had led Abner away, and he had departed in peace,21 E disse Abner a David: io mi leverò, e raunerò a te, signore mio, tutto Israel; e farò patto teco, acciò che tu signoreggi a tutti, sì come la tua anima desidera. E David accompagnato Abner, e quegli andatosene in pace,
immediately the servants of David and of Joab arrived, after having slain robbers, with exceedingly great spoils. But Abner was not with David in Hebron. For by then he had sent him away, and he had set out in peace.22 incontanente Ioab e i servi di David tornarono con grandissima preda, morti i ladroni. Abner non era con David in Ebron; però che s' era partito, e andato in pace.
And Joab, and the entire army that was with him, had arrived afterward. And so, it was reported to Joab, explaining that Abner, the son of Ner, went to the king, and he dismissed him, and he went away in peace.23 E Ioab, e tutto lo esercito il quale era con lui, venne poscia; e fue annunziato a Ioab da quelli che dissero: Abner figliuolo di Ner sì è venuto al re, e lui l' ha lasciato andare, ed è ito in pace.
And Joab entered to the king, and he said: “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him, so that he has gone and departed?24 E Ioab entrò al re, e disse: che hai tu fatto? Abner è venuto a te; e hailo lasciato andare, ed egli s'è partito?
Do you not know, about Abner, the son of Ner, that he came to you for this, so that he might deceive you, and might know of your departure and your return, and so that he might know all that you do?”25 Non conosci tu Abner figliuolo di Ner, che è venuto a te per ingannarti, e per sapere il tuo entramento e la tua uscita, e per sapere quello che tu fai?
And so, Joab, going out from David, sent messengers after Abner, and he brought him back from the cistern of Sirah, without David knowing.26 E uscito Ioab da David, si mandò dopo Abner messaggi; e fecelo tornare dalla cisterna di Sira, non sapendolo David.
And when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him alone to the middle of the gate, so that he might speak to him, but with deceit. And there, he stabbed him in the groin, and he died, in revenge for the blood of Asahel, his brother.27 E tornato Abner adietro in Ebron, menollo Ioab da canto al mezzo della porta, per favellargli a tradimento; e ivi il ferìo nell' inguine, e morì per vendetta del sangue del suo fratello Asael.
And when David had heard of it, now that the matter was done, he said: “I and my kingdom are clean before the Lord, even forever, of the blood of Abner, the son of Ner.28 E udito David questa cosa, già fatta, disse: io sono mondo, e il regno mio appo Iddio in sempiterno, del sangue di Abner figliuolo di Ner.
And may it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon the entire house of his father. And may there not fail to be, in the house of Joab, one who suffers from a flow of seed, or one who is leprous, or one who is effeminate, or one who falls by the sword, or one who is in need of bread.”29 E vegna sopra il capo di Ioab, e sopra tutta la casa del suo padre; e non manchi mai della casa di Ioab persona ch' abbia il flusso del seme, e leproso, che tegna il fuso, e che muoia di coltello, e necessiti di pane.
And so, Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon, during the battle.30 Onde Ioab, e Abisai suo fratello, uccisero Abner; però ch' avea morto Asael loro fratello in Gabaon, nella battaglia.
Then David said to Joab, and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn before the funeral procession of Abner.” Moreover, king David himself was following the casket.31 E David disse a Ioab e a tutto il popolo ch' era con lui: isquarciate le vostre vestimenta, vestitevi di sacco, e piagnete dinanzi alla bara di Abner. E David andava dietro alla bara.
And when they had buried Abner in Hebron, king David lifted up his voice, and he wept over the burial mound of Abner. And all the people also wept.32 E seppellironlo in Ebron. David levò la sua voce, e pianse sopra la sepoltura di Abner; e pianse tutto il popolo.
And the king, mourning and lamenting Abner, said: “By no means has Abner died the way that cowards usually die.33 E il re dicea piagnendo: Abner, Abner, tu non se' morto, come sogliono morire gli uomini vili.
Your hands are not bound, and your feet are not weighed down with fetters. But just as men often fall before the sons of iniquity, so you have fallen.” And while repeating this, all the people wept over him.34 Le tue mani non sono legate, li tuoi piè non sono aggravati di legami; ma tu se' caduto, come suolsi cadere dinanzi ai figliuoli della iniquità. E tutto il popolo, ripetendo, pianse sopra lui.
And when the entire multitude had arrived to take food with David, while it was still broad daylight, David swore, saying, “May God do these things to me, and may he add these other things, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets.”35 E venuta tutta la moltitudine a mangiare con David, di chiaro dì giurò David, e disse: questo faccia Iddio a me, e questo aggiunga, se prima che il sole tramonti assaggerò pane nè nulla.
And all the people heard it, and everything that the king did in the sight of the entire people was pleasing to them.36 E tutto il popolo intesero ciò; e piacque, in cospetto di tutto il popolo, tutto quello che fece David.
And every common person, and all of Israel, realized on that day that the killing of Abner, the son of Ner, had not been done by the king.37 E conobbe il popolo e tutto Israel in quel dì, che non era proceduto dal re, che fosse morto Abner figliuolo di Ner.
The king also said to his servants: “Could you be ignorant that a leader and a very great man has fallen today in Israel?38 E disse il re a' servi suoi: or non sapete voi, che oggi sì è caduto il principe massimo in Israel?
But I am still tender, and yet anointed king. And these men of the sons of Zeruiah are too harsh for me. May the Lord repay whoever does evil in accord with his malice.”39 E io ancora delicato, e unto re (Ecco oggi sono conosciuto e posto fui sotto re). Ma quegli uomini, figliuoli di Sarvia, sono a me duri. Iddio renderà a chi fa male, secondo la sua malizia.
