Genesis 35

1 About this time, God said to Jacob, “Arise and go up to Bethel, and live there, and make an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”	1 Dios dijo a Jacob: «Sube a Betel y permanece allí. Levanta allí un altar al Dios que se te apareció cuando huías de tu hermano Esaú».
2 In truth, Jacob, having called together all his house, said: “Cast away the foreign gods that are in your midst and be cleansed, and also change your garments.	2 Entonces Jacob dijo a sus familiares y a todos los demás que estaban con él: «Dejen de lado todos los dioses extraños que tengan con ustedes, purifíquense y cámbiense de ropa.
3 Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, so that we may make an altar there to God, who heeded me in the day of my tribulation, and who accompanied me on my journey.”	3 Ahora subiremos a Betel, y allí levantaré un altar al Dios que me respondió cuando estuve angustiado, y que estuvo conmigo en el viaje que realicé».
4 Therefore, they gave him all the foreign gods which they had, and the earrings which were in their ears. And then he buried them under the terebinth tree, which is beyond the city of Shechem.	4 Ellos entregaron a Jacob todos los dioses extraños que tenían consigo y los aros que llevaban en sus orejas. Y Jacob los enterró debajo de la encina que está cerca de Siquem.
5 And when they had set out, the terror of God invaded all the surrounding cities, and they dared not pursue them as they withdrew.	5 Cuando partieron, Dios hizo cundir el pánico entre las poblaciones vecinas, de manera que nadie persiguió a los hijos de Jacob.
6 And so, Jacob arrived at Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, also named Bethel: he and all the people with him.	6 Así Jacob llegó a Luz –o sea, Betel– en la tierra de Canaán, junto con toda la gente que lo acompañaba.
7 And he built an altar there, and he called the name of that place, ‘House of God.’ For there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.	7 Allí erigió un altar, y puso a ese lugar el nombre de Betel, porque allí se le había revelado Dios, cuando él huía de su hermano.
8 About the same time, Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died, and she was buried at the base of Bethel, under an oak tree. And the name of that place was called, ‘Oak of Weeping.’	8 Mientras tanto murió Débora, la nodriza de Rebeca, y fue sepultada bajo la encina que se encuentra antes de llegar a Betel. Por eso se la llamó «Encina del llanto».
9 Then God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,	9 Cuando Jacob regresó de Padán Aram, Dios se le apareció de nuevo y lo bendijo,
10 saying: “You will no longer be called Jacob, for your name shall be Israel.” And he called him Israel,	10 diciéndole: «Tu nombre es Jacob. Pero en adelante no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel». Así le puso el nombre de Israel.
11 and he said to him: “I am Almighty God: increase and multiply. Tribes and peoples of nations will be from you, and kings will go forth from your loins.	11 Luego añadió: «Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Sé fecundo y multiplícate. De ti nacerá una nación, más aún, una asamblea de naciones, y saldrán reyes de tus entrañas.
12 And the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your offspring after you.”	12 La tierra que di a Abraham y a Isaac, ahora te la doy a ti y a tu descendencia».
13 And he withdrew from him.	13 Y Dios se alejó de él.
14 In truth, he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him, pouring out libations over it, and pouring oil,	14 Jacob erigió una piedra conmemorativa en el lugar donde Dios le había hablado. En seguida ofreció una libación sobre ella y ungió la piedra con aceite.
15 and he called the name of that place, ‘Bethel.’	15 Jacob llamó Betel a aquel lugar, porque allí Dios había hablado con él.
16 Then, departing from there, he arrived in springtime at the land that leads to Ephrath. And there, when Rachel was giving birth,	16 Partieron de Betel, y cuando todavía faltaba un trecho para llegar a Efratá, a Raquel le llegó el momento de dar a luz, y tuvo un parto difícil.
17 because it was a difficult birth, she began to be in danger. And the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you will have this son also.”	17 Como daba a luz muy penosamente, la partera le dijo» «¡No temas, porque tienes otro hijo varón!».
18 Then, when her life was departing because of the pain, and death was now imminent, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain. Yet truly, his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.	18 Con su último aliento –porque ya se moría– lo llamó Ben Oní; pero su padre le puso el nombre de Benjamín.
19 And so Rachel died, and she was buried in the way that leads to Ephrath: this place is Bethlehem.	19 Así murió Raquel, y fue enterrada junto al camino de Efratá, o sea, de Belén.
20 And Jacob erected a monument over her sepulcher. This is the monument to Rachel’s tomb, even to the present day.	20 Sobre su tumba Jacob erigió un monumento, el mismo que está en esa tumba hasta el día de hoy.
21 Departing from there, he pitched his tent beyond the Tower of the Flock.	21 Israel siguió avanzando, y estableció su campamento más allá de Migdal Eder.
22 And when he was living in that region, Reuben went out, and he slept with Bilhah the concubine of his father, which was not such a small matter as to be hidden from him. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.	22 Mientras acampaba en aquella región, Rubén se acostó con Bilhá, la concubina de su padre, e Israel se enteró.
23 The sons of Leah: Reuben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun.	23 Los hijos de Lía fueron Rubén, el primogénito de Jacob, Simeón, Leví, Judá, Isacar y Zabulón.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.	24 Los hijos de Raquel fueron José y Benjamín.
25 The sons of Bilhah, handmaid of Rachel: Dan and Naphtali.	25 Los hijos de Bilhá, la esclava de Raquel, fueron Dan y Neftalí.
26 The sons of Zilpah, handmaid of Leah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.	26 Los hijos de Zilpá, la esclava de Lía, fueron Gad y Aser. Estos son los hijos que le nacieron a Jacob en Padán Aram.
27 And then he went to his father Isaac in Mamre, the city of Arba: this place is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.	27 Jacob llegó a la casa de su padre Isaac, en Mamré, En Quiriat Arbá –la actual Hebrón– donde también había residido Abraham.
28 And the days of Isaac were completed: one hundred and eighty years.	28 Isaac vivió ciento ochenta años.
29 And being consumed by old age, he died. And he was placed with his people, being old and full of days. And his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.	29 Al término de ellos murió, anciano y cargado de años, y fue a reunirse con los suyos. Sus hijos Esaú y Jacob le dieron sepultura.
