NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physical y?	1 Que vantagem diremos, pois, que conseguiu Abraão, nosso pai segundo a carne?
2 If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something toboast about. But not before God:	2 Porque, se Abraão foi justificado em virtude de sua observância, tem que se gloriar; mas não diante de Deus.
3 does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?	3 Ora, que diz a Escritura? Abraão creu em Deus e isso lhe foi imputado em conta de justiça {Gn 15,6}.
4 Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due;	4 Ora, o salário não é gratificação, mas uma dívida ao trabalhador.
5 however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faiththat is reckoned as uprightness.	5 Mas aquele que sem obra alguma crê naquele que justifica o ímpio, a sua fé lhe é imputada em conta de justiça.
6 David, too, says the same: he cal s someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person,apart from any action undertaken:	6 É assim que Davi proclama bem-aventurado o homem a quem Deus atribui justiça, independentemente das obras:
7 How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.	7 Bem-aventurados aqueles cujas iniqüidades foram perdoadas e cujos pecados foram cobertos!
8 How blessed are those to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.	8 Bem-aventurado o homem ao qual o Senhor não imputou o seu pecado {Sl 31,1s}.
9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, or is it said of the uncircumcised as wel ? Wel , we said ofAbraham that his faith was reckoned to him as uprightness.	9 Essa bem-aventurança é somente para os circuncisos, ou também para os incircuncisos? Dizemos, com efeito, que a fé foi imputada a Abraão em conta de justiça.
10 Now how did this come about? When he was already circumcised, or before he had beencircumcised? Not when he had been circumcised, but while he was still uncircumcised;	10 Quando lhe foi ela imputada? Depois ou antes de sua circuncisão? Não depois, mas antes de ser circuncidado.
11 and circumcision was given to him later, as a sign and a guarantee that the faith which he had whilestill uncircumcised was reckoned to him as uprightness. In this way, Abraham was to be the ancestor of albelievers who are uncircumcised, so that they might be reckoned as upright;	11 Depois é que recebeu o sinal da circuncisão, como selo da justiça que tinha obtido pela fé antes de ser circuncidado. E assim se tornou o pai de todos os incircuncisos que crêem, a fim de que também a estes seja imputada a justiça.
12 as well as the ancestor of those of the circumcision who not only have their circumcision but who alsofol ow our ancestor Abraham along the path of faith that he trod before he was circumcised.	12 Pai também dos circuncisos, que não só trazem o sinal, mas que acompanham as pegadas da fé que nosso pai Abraão possuía antes de ser circuncidado.
13 For the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he should inherit the world was not through theLaw, but through the uprightness of faith.	13 Com efeito, não foi em virtude da lei que a promessa de herdar o mundo foi feita a Abraão ou à sua posteridade, mas em virtude da justiça da fé.
14 For if it is those who live by the Law who wil gain the inheritance, faith is worthless and the promise iswithout force;	14 Porque, se a herança é reservada aos observadores da lei, a fé já não tem razão de ser e a promessa fica sem valor.
15 for the Law produces nothing but God's retribution, and it is only where there is no Law that it ispossible to live without breaking the Law.	15 Porquanto a lei produz a ira; e onde não existe lei, não há transgressão.
16 That is why the promise is to faith, so that it comes as a free gift and is secure for al thedescendants, not only those who rely on the Law but al those others who rely on the faith of Abraham, theancestor of us all	16 Logo, é pela fé que alguém se torna herdeiro. Portanto, gratuitamente; e a promessa é assegurada a toda a posteridade de Abraão, não somente aos que procedem da lei, mas também aos que possuem a fé de Abraão, que é pai de todos nós.
17 (as scripture says: I have made you the father of many nations). Abraham is our father in the eyes ofGod, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and cal s into existence what does not yet exist.	17 Em verdade, está escrito: Eu te constituí pai de muitas nações {Gn 17,5}; {nosso pai, portanto} diante dos olhos daquele em quem acreditou, o Deus que dá vida aos mortos e chama à existência as coisas que estão no nada.
18 Though there seemed no hope, he hoped and believed that he was to become father of many nationsin fulfilment of the promise: Just so wil your descendants be.	18 Esperando, contra toda a esperança, Abraão teve fé e se tornou pai de muitas nações, segundo o que lhe fora dito: Assim será a tua descendência {Gn 15,5}.
19 Even the thought that his body was as good as dead -- he was about a hundred years old -- and thatSarah's womb was dead too did not shake his faith.	19 Não vacilou na fé, embora reconhecendo o seu próprio corpo sem vigor - pois tinha quase cem anos - e o seio de Sara igualmente amortecido.
20 Counting on the promise of God, he did not doubt or disbelieve, but drew strength from faith and gaveglory to God,	20 Ante a promessa de Deus, não vacilou, não desconfiou, mas conservou-se forte na fé e deu glória a Deus.
21 ful y convinced that whatever God promised he has the power to perform.	21 Estava plenamente convencido de que Deus era poderoso para cumprir o que prometera.
22 This is the faith that was reckoned to him as uprightness.	22 Eis por que sua fé lhe foi contada como justiça.
23 And the word 'reckoned' in scripture applies not only to him;	23 Ora, não é só para ele que está escrito que a fé lhe foi imputada em conta de justiça.
24 it is there for our sake too -- our faith, too, wil be 'reckoned'	24 É também para nós, pois a nossa fé deve ser-nos imputada igualmente, porque cremos naquele que dos mortos ressuscitou Jesus, nosso Senhor,
25 because we believe in him who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus who was handed over to deathfor our sins and raised to life for our justification.	25 o qual foi entregue por nossos pecados e ressuscitado para a nossa justificação.
