1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;	1 Ricordati del creatore tuo nel dì della gioventude tua, innanzi che vegna il tempo della afflizione, e ch' elli appressino quelli anni de' quali tu dica: questi non mi piacciono!
2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;	2 e inanzi che intenebrisca il sole e 'l lume, e le stelle e la luna, e ch' elli ritornino li nuvoli dopo la piova;
3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.	3 quando si partiranno le guardie della casa, e muterannosi li uomini fortissimi, e oziosamente saranno coloro che màcinano in minuto numero, ed entreranno coloro che guatano per li forami;
4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;	4 e li macinati in bassezza di voce chiuderanno li usci nella piazza, e leverannosi su alla voce dell' uccello, e diventeranno sorde tutte le figlie di monte Carmelo.
5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;	5 E le cose alte temerenno, e averanno paura nella via; fiorirae lo mandolo, e ingrasserae la locusta, e guasterae il capparo; però che l' uomo anderae nella casa della sua eternitade, e li piagnenti anderanno intorno per la piazza.
6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:	6 Inanzi che si rompa la fune dell' argento, ricorra la vitta dell' oro, e sia disfragellata la idria in su la fontana, e sia spezzata la ruota su la cisterna;
7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.	7 inanzi che la polvere torni nella terra sua donde ella era, e anzi che l'anima ritorni a colui che la diede.
8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.	8 Vanitade delle vanitadi, disse lo Ecclesiaste e tutte le cose sono vanitade.
9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.	9 E conciò fusse cosa che lo Ecclesiaste [fusse] savissimo, ha ammaestrato il popolo, e insegnolli quelle cose che avesse a fare; e investigando compose il libro de' proverbii.
10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.	10 Cercò le parole utili, e scrisse insieme sermoni dirittissimi e pieni di veritade.
11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.	11 Le parole de' savi sono sì come stili pungenti, e sì come chiavelli fitti nel profondo, le quali per consiglio de' maestri sono date da uno pastore.
12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.	12 Oltre di queste cose (che sono scritte) non richieder più, figliuolo mio; però che a componer altri libri non sarà utile, e la spessa meditazione è afflizione della carne.
13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.	13 Il fine del parlare noi tutti udiamo ugualmente. Temi Iddio, e guarda li suoi comandamenti; (ciò) è ogni uomo a questo fine fatto.
14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.	14 Tutte le cose che si fanno, si riduceranno nel giudicio per ciascuna cosa errata, e per ogni cosa, se ella sia buona o se ella sia rea. Amen.
