NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
[For the choirmaster Tune: 'Lilies . . .' Of David] Save me, God, for the waters have closed in on myvery being.1 For the leader; according to "Lilies." Of David.
I am sinking in the deepest swamp and there is no firm ground. I have stepped into deep water andthe waves are washing over me.2 Save me, God, for the waters have reached my neck.
I am exhausted with cal ing out, my throat is hoarse, my eyes are worn out with searching for my God.3 I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me.
More numerous than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without reason. Those who seek toget rid of me are powerful, my treacherous enemies. (Must I give back what I have never stolen?)4 I am weary with crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes have failed, looking for my God.
God, you know how foolish I am, my offences are not hidden from you.5 More numerous than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause. Too many for my strength are my treacherous enemies. Must I now restore what I did not steal?
Those who hope in you must not be made fools of, Yahweh Sabaoth, because of me! Those who seekyou must not be disgraced, God of Israel, because of me!6 God, you know my folly; my faults are not hidden from you.
It is for you I bear insults, my face is covered with shame,7 Let those who wait for you, LORD of hosts, not be shamed through me. Let those who seek you, God of Israel, not be disgraced through me
I am estranged from my brothers, alienated from my own mother's sons;8 For your sake I bear insult, shame covers my face.
for I am eaten up with zeal for your house, and insults directed against you fall on me.9 I have become an outcast to my kin, a stranger to my mother's children.
I mortify myself with fasting, and find myself insulted for it,10 Because zeal for your house consumes me, I am scorned by those who scorn you.
I dress myself in sackcloth and become their laughing-stock,11 I have wept and fasted, but this led only to scorn.
the gossip of people sitting at the gate, and the theme of drunkards' songs.12 I clothed myself in sackcloth; I became a byword for them.
And so, I pray to you, Yahweh, at the time of your favour; in your faithful love answer me, in theconstancy of your saving power.13 They who sit at the gate gossip about me; drunkards make me the butt of their songs.
Rescue me from the mire before I sink in; so I shal be saved from those who hate me, from thewatery depths.14 But I pray to you, LORD, for the time of your favor. God, in your great kindness answer me with your constant help.
Let not the waves wash over me, nor the deep swal ow me up, nor the pit close its mouth on me.15 Rescue me from the mire; do not let me sink. Rescue me from my enemies and from the watery depths.
Answer me, Yahweh, for your faithful love is generous; in your tenderness turn towards me;16 Do not let the floodwaters overwhelm me, nor the deep swallow me, nor the mouth of the pit close over me.
do not turn away from your servant, be quick to answer me, for I am in trouble.17 Answer me, LORD, in your generous love; in your great mercy turn to me.
Come to my side, redeem me, ransom me because of my enemies.18 Do not hide your face from your servant; in my distress hasten to answer me.
You know well the insults, the shame and disgrace I endure. Every one of my oppressors is known toyou.19 Come and ransom my life; because of my enemies redeem me.
Insult has broken my heart past cure. I hoped for sympathy, but in vain, for consolers -- not one to befound.20 You know my reproach, my shame, my disgrace; before you stand all my foes.
To eat they gave me poison, to drink, vinegar when I was thirsty.21 Insult has broken my heart, and I am weak; I looked for compassion, but there was none, for comforters, but found none.
May their own table prove a trap for them, and their abundance a snare;22 Instead they put gall in my food; for my thirst they gave me vinegar.
may their eyes grow so dim that they cannot see, al their muscles lose their strength.23 Make their own table a snare for them, a trap for their friends.
Vent your fury on them, let your burning anger overtake them.24 Make their eyes so dim they cannot see; keep their backs ever feeble.
Reduce their encampment to ruin, and leave their tents untenanted,25 Pour out your wrath upon them; let the fury of your anger overtake them.
for hounding someone you had already stricken, for redoubling the pain of one you had wounded.26 Make their camp desolate, with none to dwell in their tents.
Charge them with crime after crime, exclude them from your saving justice,27 For they pursued the one you struck, added to the pain of the one you wounded.
erase them from the book of life, do not enrol them among the upright.28 Add that to their crimes; let them not attain to your reward.
For myself, wounded wretch that I am, by your saving power raise me up!29 Strike them from the book of the living; do not count them among the just!
I wil praise God's name in song, I wil extol him by thanksgiving,30 But I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help protect me, God,
for this wil please Yahweh more than an ox, than a bullock horned and hoofed.31 That I may praise God's name in song and glorify it with thanksgiving.
The humble have seen and are glad. Let your courage revive, you who seek God.32 My song will please the LORD more than oxen, more than bullocks with horns and hooves:
For God listens to the poor, he has never scorned his captive people.33 "See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, take heart!
Let heaven and earth and seas, and al that stirs in them, acclaim him!34 For the LORD hears the poor, does not spurn those in bondage.
For God wil save Zion, and rebuild the cities of Judah, and people will live there on their own land;35 Let the heavens and the earth sing praise, the seas and whatever moves in them!"
the descendants of his servants wil inherit it, and those who love his name wil dwell there.36 God will rescue Zion, rebuild the cities of Judah. God's servants shall dwell in the land and possess it;
7) it shall be the heritage of their descendants; those who love God's name shall dwell there.
