1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 L'ariento ha li principii delle sue vene; ed è lo luogo suo all' oro, nel quale si fa.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 Lo ferro della terra è tolto; e la pietra, soluta per caldo, in rame si converte.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 Lo tempo pose alle tenebre; e la fine di tutte le cose elli considera (in veritade), la pietra della scuritade e l'ombra della morte.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Dividerà il torrente dal popolo peregrinante coloro de' quali s'è dimenticato lo piede dello abbisognante, e li uomini senza via.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 La terra, della quale nasceva il pane nello suo luogo, con fuoco è sovversa.
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 Il luogo di zaffiro le pietre sue, e li pezzi di quella è oro.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 Non seppe la via dell' uccello, nè non [la] riguardò l'occhio dell' avoltore.
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 Non calcarono quella i figliuoli de' mercatanti, nè non passò per quella la lionessa.
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 Alla pietra istese la sua mano; sovvertì dalle radici li monti.
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 Nelle pietre li rivi fesse; e ogni cosa preziosa vide l'occhio suo.
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 E in verità le cose profonde delli fiumi ragguarda, e le cose nascose produce nella luce.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Ma la sapienza dov'è trovata? o chi è lo luogo della intelligenza?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 Non sa l'uomo lo prezzo suo, nè non è trovato nella terra delli suavemente viventi. ·
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 L'abisso dice: non è in me, e lo mare favella: non è meco.
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Non si darà l' oro ottimo per quella, nè non sarà appiccato l'ariento nella commutazione sua.
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 Non sarae assomigliato alli tinti colori dell' India, nè alla pietra sardonica preziosissima, ovvero allo zaffiro.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 Non si agguaglierae a lei l'oro ovvero lo vetro; nè non saranno commutati per lei li vaselli dell' oro (eccelsi).
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 E' soprastanti non si ricorderanno della comparazione sua; ma la sapienza si trae delle cose nascose.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Non si agguaglierà a lei lo topazio di Etiopia, nè sarà accompagnata alle (belle) tinture mondissime.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Donde verrà adunque (cioè) la sapienza (nascosta)? e quale è il luogo della intelligenza?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 È agli occhii di tutti i viventi ancora nascosa; ed è celata agli uccelli del cielo.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 E la perdizione e la morte dissono: noi abbiamo udito la sua fama.
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Iddio intende la via sua, ed elli conosce il luogo di quella.
24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)	24 In verità li fini del mondo lui ragguarda; e guarda ogni cosa ch' è sotto il cielo.
25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Chi fece lo carico a' venti, e dell' acque appiccò la misura;
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 quando poneva alle piove la legge, e la via alla sonante tempesta;
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 allotta vide quella, e (certo) narrò e apparecchiò e investigò.
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 E disse all' uomo: ecco la paura del Signore, quella è la sapienza, e partirsi dal male è intelligenza.
