1 Maccabees 9

1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Intanto abbiendo inteso il re Demetrio, che Nicanore era stato isconfitto e morto insieme colla sua oste, sì ordinoe ancora di mandare in Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, e lo destro corno (dell' oste) con loro, (cioè la schiera forte, la quale soleva stare dal lato ritto del re).
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 E andàronsene per la via che capita in Galgala, e puosono il campo in Masalot lo quale è in Arbelli; e preserla per forza, e uccisono ivi molti uomini.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Nel primo mese delli CLII anni (del regno de' Greci) puosono oste a Ierusalem.
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 E poi, levandosi quindi, se n'andarono in Berea, e furono XX milia uomini a piè, e duo milia cavalieri.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 Ma Giuda avea già posto il suo campo in Laisa, ed erano con lui (solamente) tre milia uomini eletti.
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Onde costoro, quand' egli viddono la moltitudine dell' oste, cominciarono fortemente a temere; e partironsi molti fuori dell' oste celatamente, che non ne rimase con Giuda se non ottocento uomini.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Allora, quando Giuda vide che la sua oste era così minuita e che la battaglia il costrigneva, si conturbò nell' animo suo, però che non vedeva tempo di raccogliere più di sua gente; e così per questo fu molto isgomentato.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Ma (non di meno egli) pur disse a coloro che erano con lui rimasi: suso valentemente, andiamo incontro agli nostri nimici, e proviamo se noi gli possiamo vincere.
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Ma loro non di meno sì dubitavano e isconsigliavano, dicendo: (o signor nostro) noi non potremo a loro contrastare, ma piacciati che noi scampiamo, e torniamo indietro alli nostri fratelli; e quando noi saremo colla nostra gente radunati, allora combatteremo; (e però perdonaci), chè noi siamo troppo pochi.
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Allora disse Giuda: non piaccia a Dio che noi usiamo tanta viltade, che noi fuggiamo dinanzi dagli nimici nostri; anzi (combattiamo, e) se la nostra morte è pure presso, (vendiamla loro cara, e) moiamo in virtude per li nostri fratelli, e non concediamo disonore alla nostra gloria.
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 Allora si mosse l'oste de' nemici del campo loro, e furono loro a petto; e li loro cavalieri si divisono in due parti, e gli arcieri e quelli delle rombole andavano dinanzi dall' oste, e tutti i potenti battaglieri erano nella prima battaglia.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 Ma Bacchide era nel destro corno (della ischiera), e appressossi la loro legione da due parti, e sonarono le trombe.
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 E ancora quegli ch' erano con Giuda, similmente sonavano e gridavano; e pareva che la terra si movesse (per gli suoni e) per le voci dell' oste; e cominciossi la battaglia, la quale durò dalla mattina insino al vespro.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 E veggendo Giuda che la destra della schiera, ove era Bacchide, era più ferma, (e più forte che l' altre), percosse fortemente a loro, e con lui insieme. quelli ch' erano più franchi e animosi;
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 E ruppegli, e cacciogli insino al monte d' Azoto.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Ma gli battaglieri, ch' erano dal sinistro corno (della battaglia), veggendo come il destro corno (della loro gente) era isconfitto (e scacciato), tennero dietro a Giuda e a sua gente, percotendo loro di dietro alle spalle.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 Onde la battaglia fu molto pericolosa, (però che quelli che cacciavano erano cacciati); onde (essendo gli suoi nel mezzo de' nemici) molti ne furono morti, tagliati da ogni parte.
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 Ma alla fine Giuda fu morto, e chi potè de' suoi campoe.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 (Fatte tutte queste cose), Ionata e Simone suoi fratelli (sì pervenneno quivi, e) ricolsono il corpo morto di Giuda, e sì lo seppellirono nel monumento de' loro padri nella città di Modin.
20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.	20 E tutto il popolo d' Israel il pianse con grande pianto per molti dì.
21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'	21 E dicevano a Iddio: come hai potuto fare cadere il potente uomo, il quale faceva salvo il popolo d'Israel?
22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 E veramente le molte battaglie che faceva Giuda Maccabeo e le sue grandi virtudi e la sua grandezza (e la sua prodezza) non sono qui tutte scritte; per ciò che furono molte più.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Dopo la morte di Giuda la mala gente si levò suso (a mal fare) per tutti li confini d' Israel, e cominciaronsi a palesare tutti quegli che male facevano.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 E in quel tempo fue grande fame (per tutto il paese); onde tutto il paese si diede a rendere a Bacchide.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 E (quando) Bacchide (ne fu signore,) sì elesse certi malvagi uomini, e ordinogli signori della regione (e delle contrade).
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 Le quali loro spiavano, e addomandavano delli amici di Giuda, (e prendevangli) e menavangli dinanzi a Bacchide, ed egli straziandogli si vendicava di loro.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 E così fu nel popolo di Dio grande tribulazione, maggiore che si sentisse da poi che non apparve profeta tra le genti d' Israel.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 Allora si radunarono tutti gli amici di Giuda, e dissono a Ionata:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 Da poi in qua che morì (il buon) Giuda tuo fratello, alcuno uomo non si trova simile a lui, il quale si levi contro a' nimici, e contro a Bacchide, e contro a quelli che sono nimici della gente nostra.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Adunque noi oggi eleggiamo te; piacciati d'essere nostro principe in suo luogo, e si nostro duca a combattere nelle nostre battaglie.
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 Ionata adunque ricevette in quel tempo il principato, e fue signore in luogo del buon Giuda suo fratello.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 E quando Bacchide il seppe, cercava di lui uccidere.
33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.	33 Ma Ionata e Simone suo fratello se n'avviddono, e anche tutti quegli che tenevano con loro; donde loro se ne fuggirono nel deserto di Tecue, e accamparonsi a lato al lago di Asfar.
34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)	34 E quando Bacchide l'ebbe spiato, egli in persona con tutta la sua oste venne il sabbato di là dal (fiume) Giordano.
35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 E mandò Ionata, (Giovanni) suo fratello inanzi per capitano del popolo, e pregò li Nabutei, i quali erano suoi amici, che loro gli conducessono lo apparecchiamento suo (cioè della vittuaglia) della quale n'era dovizioso il paese (in quella stagione, e prestassono loro i padiglioni e l'arme, infino che combattessono con Bacchide, però che li Nabutei n' aveano copiosamente).
36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.	36 Ora in questo tempo avvenne che i figliuoli di Iambri uscirono di Madaba, e presono Giovanni (fratello di Ionata) con tutti gli suoi arnesi, e fuggironsi con lui e con li arnesi, (e con altri che aveano presi, e misono a morte Giovanni).
37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Di che questa cosa fue fatta a sapere a Ionata e a Simone suo fratello (di che avvenne poi a poco di tempo), che li detti figliuoli di Iambri facevano grandi nozze, però che l' uno di loro menava moglie di Madaba, figliuola d' uno principe di Canaan, con grande gloria e festa.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Allora (Ionata e Simone) si ricordarono del sangue (sparto della morte) di Giovanni loro fratello; di che puosono uno agguato a una rivolta di uno monte.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 E poco istante viddono la grande burbanza del maritaggio e lo grande apparecchiamento; e lo sposo veniva inanzi, e li suoi fratelli e li amici gli venivano incontro con tamburi e altri stromenti è con molte armi.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Allora uscirono dello agguato, e sì gli uccisono; e molti ne furono feriti, e gli altri se ne fuggirono nel monte; e presono le loro robe.
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 E feciono tornare le loro nozze in pianto, e gli stromenti in lamento.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 E feciono la vendetta del sangue (della morte) del loro fratello, e tornaronsi alla ripa del (fiume) Giordano.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 E quando Bacchide intese questo, venne infino alla contrada del Giordano nel dì del sabbato con grande potenza.
44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.	44 Allora disse Ionata alla sua gente: suso valentemente, combattiamo contro alli nostri nimici; imperciò che oggi non è sì come jeri, nè sì come l'altro dì.
45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 Per che noi abbiamo la battaglia dinanzi, e l'acqua del Giordano è quindi e quinci, e sonci le ripe e li paduli e le campagne; e non ci è luogo da raccogliersi per fuga.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Adunque dirizzate le vostre menti al cielo. e pregate Iddio che ci liberi delle mani de' nostri nimici. E allora incominciò la battaglia.
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 E Ionata si fece incontro a Bacchide, e stese la mano per percuoterlo; ma egli si trasse indietro.
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 Ma Ionata e la sua gente (s' assicurarono e) gittaronsi per lo Giordano, e passarono oltre alli loro nimici.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 E furono morti in quel dì, di quegli di Bacchide, mille uomini; onde (Ionata fu vincitore, ma gl' inimici) si tornarono in Ierusalem.
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 Ed edificarono le cittadi in Iudea, e armarono la fortezza la quale era in Ierico, e (afforzarono) in Ammaum e in Betoron e in Betel, e in Tamnata e Fara e Topo, (e adornaronle) d' alte mura e di porte e di serrami.
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 E bacchide vi mise dentro molte guardie, acciò che facessono guerra contro alla gente d'Israel.
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 E similmente armò la città di Betsura e Gazara e la rocca, e puosevi fornimento e vittuaglia.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 E tolsevi per ostaggi i figliuoli de' prìncipi del paese, e misegli nella rocca di Ieruselem in buona guardia.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 E nel CLIII anno (del regno de' Greci), il secondo mese, comandò Alcimo, che fossono distrutte le mura della santa casa di Dio dal lato dentro, e ancora l'opere de' profeti; ed (egli medesimo) incominciò a farle distruggere.
55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 Ma egli in quel tempo fu percosso; e le sue opere furono impedite, e la sua bocca fu rinchiusa, e fu compreso dalla (infermitade che si chiama) parlasia; e non poteva più parlare, nè disporre i fatti della sua casa.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 E così morì Alcimo in quel tempo.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 E veggendo Bacchide ch' era morto Alcimo, sì si ritornò al re; e così riposò il paese due anni.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 E intanto tutti i malvagi uomini (del paese) si radunarono, e dissono: ecco il tempo da (poterci rallegrare e) prendere vendetta di Ionata, e di quegli che con lui sono; adunque mandiamo per Bacchide, e tutti gli prendiamo in una notte; imperò che vivono in pace, e non prendono guardia di loro.
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 E andarono (a Bacchide), e dierongli questo consiglio.
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 Ed egli s' apparecchiava colla sua oste per venire; e celatamente mandò lettere alli suoi compagni ch' erano in Iudea, acciò che pigliassono Ionata e tutti quelli ch' erano con lui; ma loro non poterono, però che fu fatto loro a sapere.
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 Onde (Ionata si provvidde, e) prese L uomini de' principi del paese, i quali erano de' maggiori della cavalleria, e sì gli uccise.
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 Allora Ionata e Simone, e quegli ch' erano con loro, (sì partirono quindi, e) andarono in Betbessen la quale era nel diserto, e racconciarono le sue rovine, e rifecionla da capo.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 E quando Bacchide il seppe, radunò tutta la sua potenza; e radunoe la forza di tutta Iudea.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 E mossesi, e puose campo di sopra a Betbessen; e combatteronla molti dì, e fecionvi molti ingegni.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Allora Ionata lasciò Simone suo fratello nella città, e uscì egli fuori (e andò) per lo paese, e venne con alquanta gente.
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 E percosse Odaren e li suoi fratelli e li figliuoli di Faseron nelle tende loro; e così incominciarono ad avanzare, e a riuscire in virtude.
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 Ma Simone, e ancora quegli ch' erano con lui, uscirono fuori della cittade, e affocarono li ingegni.
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 E combatterono contro a Bacchide, e fue soperchiato da loro; e fecerli grande danno, imperciò che il suo consiglio e lo suo movimento fu vano.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 Per la qual cosa si accese il furore suo contro a quegli rei uomini (del popolo) che lo aveano consigliato che venisse nella contrada; e uccise molti di loro, e sì si partì, e ritornò nel suo paese colla gente che gli era rimasa.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 E quando Ionata il seppe, sì gli mandò dietro ambasciatori per fare pace con lui, e (promisegli di) rendergli tutti i suoi prigioni.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 Ed egli volentieri ricevette la pace, e fece com' egli gli addomandava, e giurogli di non fargli più male in tutto il tempo della sua vita.
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 E rendègli tutti i suoi prigioni di Giudea ch' egli avea dinanzi presi; e poi si partì, e andossene nella sua terra, e fermoe nell' animo suo di non venire più ne' suoi confini.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 E così si partì la pestilenza d' Israel; e Ionata abitò in Macmas, e quivi tenne giustizia al popolo (d' Israel, cominciando a fare giustize ia ragione a tutti), e distrusse la mala gente (del popolo) d' Israel.
