1 Maccabees 12

1 When Jonathan saw that circumstances were working in his favour, he sent a select mission to Rometo confirm and renew his treaty of friendship with the Romans.	1 Onde vedendo Ionata ch' era prosperevole il tempo (e la buona stagione l' aiutava), sì elesse ambasciadori, e mandogli a Roma a rinnovare con loro amistade.
2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places.	2 E in quello medesimo tenore mandò lettere alli Spartiati e ad altri luoghi (in una medesima forma).
3 The envoys made their way to Rome, entered the Senate and said, 'Jonathan the high priest and theJewish nation have sent us to renew your treaty of friendship and al iance with them as before.'	3 Di che andarono a Roma, ed entrarono in corte, e dissono (l'ambasciata loro in questa forma): Ionata sommo sacerdote e la gente Giudea ci hanno mandati, che voi rinnoviate con loro amistade e la compagnia primaia.
4 The Senate gave them letters to the authorities of each place, to procure their safe conduct toJudaea.	4 Eli Romani diedono a loro lettere per luoghi a loro sudditi (onde doveano passare), acciò che gli conducessono in Giudea con pace.
5 The fol owing is the copy of the letter Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 E questo fu lo esemplo delle lettere, le quali Ionata mandò gli Spartiati:
6 'Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests and the rest of the Jewish people to theSpartans their brothers, greetings.	6 Ionata sommo sacerdote, e' suoi vecchi, e gli sacerdoti di Giudea, e tutto l' altro popolo, agli fratelli Spartiati salute.
7 'In the past, a letter was sent to Onias, the high priest, from Areios, one of your kings, stating that youare indeed our brothers, as the copy subjoined attests.	7 Già prima furono mandate lettere a Onia, sommo sacerdote, da Ario il quale regnava appo voi, come voi siete nostri fratelli, sì come contiene lo scritto ch' è posto di sotto.
8 Onias received the envoy with honour, and accepted the letter, in which a clear declaration was made of friendship and al iance.	8 E ricevette Onia quello uomo, che fue a lui mandato, con onore; e ricevette le lettere le quali significavano della compagnia e della amistade.
9 For our part, though we have no need of these, having the consolation of the holy books in ourpossession,	9 Ma noi, conciofosse cosa che non abbisognassimo d'alcuna di queste cose, abbiendo ora consolazione de' santi libri, i quali sono nelle nostre mani,
10 we venture to send to renew our fraternal friendship with you, so that we may not become strangersto you, a long time having elapsed since you last wrote to us.	10 abbiamo voluto mandare a voi a rinnovare (con voi) l' amistade e la compagnia, acciò che per avventura non divegniamo stranieri da voi; certo molti tempi sono passati da poi che voi (non) mandaste a noi.
11 We, for our part, on every occasion, at our festivals and on other appointed days, unfailinglyremember you in the sacrifices we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and fitting to remember brothers.	11 E veramente ci ricordiamo di voi d'ogni tempo, sanza niuno intervallo, negli di solenni e negli altri dì che bisogna, ne' sacrificii che sì offriamo, e nell' altre osservazioni, sì come si conviene ed è lecito di ricordarsi de' fratelli.
12 We rejoice in your renown.	12 Noi adunque ci rallegriamo della gloria vostra.
13 'We ourselves, however, have had many trials and many wars, the neighbouring kings making waron us.	13 Ma noi siamo tutti occupati di molte tribulazioni e di molte battaglie; e hannoci combattuto li re li quali ci sono d' intorno.
14 We were unwil ing to trouble you or our other al ies and friends during these wars,	14 Adunque non vogliamo essere molesti a voi, nè agli altri compagni nè amici nostri, in queste battaglie.
15 since we have the support of Heaven to help us, thanks to which we have been delivered from ourenemies, and they are the ones who have been brought low.	15 Imperò che avemo avuto aiutorio dal cielo, e siamo liberati, e li nostri nimici sono umiliati.
16 We have therefore chosen Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, and sent themto the Romans to renew our former treaty of friendship and alliance,	16 E però (sappiate che noi) abbiamo eletto Numenio [figliuolo] di Antioco, e Antipatre figliuolo di Giasone, e mandatigli a' Romani, a rinnovare la compagnia e l' amistade di prima.
17 and we have ordered them also to visit you, to greet you and deliver you this letter of oursconcerning the renewal of our brotherhood;	17 E abbiamo loro imposto, che siano con esso voi, rendendovi (grazie e) salute, e diano a voi le nostre lettere della rinnovazione della nostra fratellanza.
18 we shal be grateful for an answer to it.'	18 E però farete bene a risponderci a queste cose.
19 The following is the copy of the letter sent to Onias:	19 Questo è il rescritto che mandò [ad] Onia:
20 'Areios king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greetings.	20 [Ario] re degli Spartiati a Ionata, grande sacerdote, salute.
21 'It has been discovered in records regarding the Spartans and Jews that they are brothers, and ofthe race of Abraham.	21 Trovato è nella scrittura degli Spartiati e de' Giudei, ch' egli sono fratelli, e della schiatta di Abraam.
22 Now that this has come to our knowledge, we shall be obliged if you wil send us news of yourwelfare.	22 Ora poi che queste cose conosciute avemo, fate bene a scrivere a noi della vostra pace.
23 Our own message to you is this: your flocks and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours, andwe are instructing our envoys to give you a message to this effect.'	23 Sì come noi abbiamo scritto a voi, le nostre pecore e le nostre possessioni sono vostre, e le vostre sono nostre; abbiamvi adunque mandato ad annunziare queste cose.
24 Jonathan learned that Demetrius' generals had returned with a larger army than before to make waron him.	24 E intanto Ionata intese che gli principi di Demetrio erano tornati con maggior oste che prima, per combattere contro a lui.
25 He therefore left Jerusalem and went to engage them in the area of Hamath, not giving them thetime to invade his own territory.	25 E però egli uscì fuori di Ierusalem, e venne loro incontro nella contrada degli Amatiti; imperò che non diede loro spazio d' entrare nel suo territorio.
26 He sent spies into their camp, who told him on their return that the enemy were taking up positionsfor a night attack on the Jews.	26 E mandò nel campo loro spie; e quando furono tornate, gli dissero che gl' inimici si aveano ordinato d' assalirlo di notte.
27 At sunset, Jonathan ordered his men to keep watch with their weapons at hand, in readiness to fightat any time during the night, and posted advance guards al round the camp.	27 Onde, quando il sole fue tramonto, comandò Ionata alla sua gente, che veggiassono e fussono tutta notte con l'arme apparecchiati alla battaglia, e puose guardie (e agguati) intorno al suo campo.
28 On learning that Jonathan and his men were ready to fight, the enemy took fright and, with quakinghearts, lit fires in their bivouac and decamped.	28 E quando li nimici sentirono che Ionata e la sua gente erano apparecchiati alla battaglia, sì dubitarono e impaurirono nell' animo loro; e accesono molti fuochi nel campo loro; (poi se ne fuggirono per paura).
29 Jonathan and his men, watching the glow of the fires, were unaware of their withdrawal untilmorning,	29 Ma Ionata e gli suoi non si addierono di ciò infino alla mattina (che loro se ne fossono fuggiti); imperò che gli rilucenti fuochi gl' ingannarono (che durarono tutta notte).
30 and although Jonathan pursued them, he failed to overtake them, for they had already crossed theriver Eleutherus.	30 Allora Ionata (e la sua gente) si mise loro dietro, ma non gli poterono giugnere; imperò che loro aveano già passato il fiume (che si chiama) Eleutero.
31 So Jonathan wheeled round on the Arabs cal ed Zabadaeans, beat them and plundered them;	31 Allora Ionata volse sua via verso li Arabi i quali si chiamavano Zabadei; (e assaligli) e percossegli, e ruboe le loro ricchezze.
32 then, breaking camp, he went to Damascus, thus crossing the whole province.	32 E poi (incontanente) venne a Damasco, e campeggiando cercò tutto intorno la contrada.
33 Simon, meanwhile, had also set out and had penetrated as far as Ascalon and the neighbouringtowns. He then turned on Joppa and moved quickly to occupy it,	33 E intanto cavalcò Simone infino ad Ascalona e alle prossimane fortezze; e capitò a Ioppen, e presela;
34 for he had heard of their intention to hand over this strong point to the supporters of Demetrius; hestationed a garrison there to hold it.	34 imperò che avea inteso che volevano dare. fornimento alla parte di Demetrio; e lasciovvi buone guardie per guardare la terra.
35 Jonathan, on his return, cal ed a meeting of the elders of the people and decided with them to buildfortresses in Judaea	35 Allora ritornoe Ionata, e radunòe (al consiglio) tutti i più vecchi del popolo; e ragionava con loro di edificare fortezze in Giudea,
36 and to heighten the walls of Jerusalem and erect a high barrier between the Citadel and the city, tocut the former off from the city and isolate it, to prevent the occupants from buying or sel ing.	36 e di fare mura a Ierusalem, e di fare grandi e alte mura nel mezzo tra la città e la ròcca, acciò che fusse divisa da tutta la cittade, e fusse per sè, sì che non comperassono nè vendessono (insieme).
37 Rebuilding the city was a co-operative effort: part of the wall over the eastern ravine had fal en down;he restored the quarter called Chaphenatha.	37 E così si radunarono, ed edificarono la cittade; e cadde il muro il quale era sopra lo fossato dal lato d' oriente, e Ionata fece rifare il detto muro il quale si chiama Cafeteta.
38 Simon, meanwhile, rebuilt Adida in the lowlands, fortifying it, and erecting gates with bolts.	38 E Simone rifece Adiada in Sefela, e fornilla e armolla, e fecevi le porte e serrature.
39 Trypho's ambition was to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and overpower King Antiochus.	39 E conciofosse cosa che Trifone (del quale avemo parlato addietro) pensasse di regnare in Asia, e di porre a sè corona, e d' uccidere in prima lo re Antioco,
40 He was apprehensive that Jonathan might not al ow him to do this, and might even make war onhim, so he set out and came to Beth-Shean, in the hopes of finding some pretext for having him arrested and putto death.	40 dubitando che per l'avventura Ionata non lo impedisse, egli cercava (di ingannare Ionata, e) di prenderlo e di ucciderlo. E però si levò suso, e venne in Betsan; (e mandò a Ionata, che gli venisse incontro, però che voleva regnare in Asia).
41 Jonathan went out to intercept him, with forty thousand picked men in battle order, and arrived atBeth-Shean.	41 Allora Ionata gli venne incontro (e in aiuto) con XL milia uomini eletti (e insegnati) a battaglia, e venne in Betsan.
42 When Trypho saw him there with a large force, he hesitated to make any move against him.	42 E veggendo Trifone, che Ionata era venuto (in suo aiuto) con grande oste, (d' incominciare sua impresa) temette (molto nè di metterli mano addosso).
43 He even received him with honour, commended him to al his friends, gave him presents andordered his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself.	43 E fecegli grande onore, e laudollo inanzi a tutti i suoi amici, e diedegli molti doni; e mandò a tutta la sua gente, che lo ubbidissono sì come sè medesimo.
44 He said to Jonathan, 'Why have you given all these people so much trouble, when there is no threatof war between us?	44 E poi disse a Ionata: per che hai affaticato tutto il tuo popolo (in nostro servigio), conciosia cosa che non ci bisogni di combattere con persona?
45 Send them back home; pick yourself a few men as your bodyguard, and come with me to Ptolemais,which I am going to hand over to you, with the other fortresses and the remaining troops and al the officials;after which, I shal take the road for home. This was my purpose in coming here.'	45 E però lasciagli ritornare a casa loro; ed eleggi teco alquanti uomini, e verrai meco a Tolemaida, e darollati con tutte l'altre fortezze, e accomandarotti l'oste, e tutti gli uffici del reggimento, e poi me n'anderoe; però che per questo sono venuto.
46 Jonathan trusted him and did as he said; he dismissed his forces, who went back to Judaea.	46 E Ionata gli credette, e fece sì come egli gli disse, e diè commiato alla sua oste; e tornarono (tutti gli uomini) in Giudea.
47 With him he retained three thousand men, of whom he left two thousand in Galilee, while a thousandaccompanied him.	47 E rimase con lui tre milia uomini solamente; de' quali egli ne rimandò in Galilea due milia, e mille n' andarono con lui.
48 But as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the people of Ptolemais closed the gates, seizedhim, and put al those who had entered with him to the sword.	48 E così tosto come Ionata fue entrato in Tolemaida, allora i Tolemaidi chiusono le porte, e presono Ionata; e tutti gli altri suoi compagni uccisono, mettendogli al taglio delle spade.
49 Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's supporters.	49 E (fatto questo) Trifone mandò (incontanente) la sua oste e gli cavalieri in Galilea nel grande campo, acciò che uccidessono tutti i compagni di Ionata.
50 These, concluding that he had been taken and had perished with his companions, encouraged oneanother, marching with closed ranks and ready to give battle,	50 Ma quando loro seppono ch' egli era stato preso, e morto [con] tutti li suoi compagni, loro medesimi presono conforto, e uscirono fuori alla battaglia.
51 and when their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 E veggendo quegli che v' erano venuti, che loro mostravano loro il volto, sì si ritornarono indietro.
52 Al reached Judaea safe and sound, and there they lamented Jonathan and his companions, beingvery frightened indeed; al Israel was plunged into mourning.	52 E gli Giudei si tornarono in pace a casa loro. Ora tutti quegli ch' erano stati con Ionata feciono grandissimo pianto (e lamento); e tutto l'altro popolo piansono molto per questa perdita.
53 The surrounding nations were al now looking for ways of destroying them: 'They have no leader,'they said, 'no ally; we have only to attack them now, and we shall blot out their very memory from all peoples.'	53 Ora avvenne che tutte le genti dintorno si studiarono di distruggere la gente Giudea, dicendo intra loro:
	54 (Ora è il tempo di distruggerli, da poi che) più non hanno il loro principe nè aiutatore; combattiamo contro a loro, (e meniamgli a fine), e togliamo a questi uomini la loro memoria.
