NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The fol owing day Holofernes issued orders to his whole army and to the whole host of auxiliaries whohad joined him, to break camp and march on Bethulia, to occupy the mountain passes and so open thecampaign against the Israelites.	1 Al día siguiente, Holofernes ordenó a todo su ejército y a toda la tropa de auxiliares que se habían unido a él, que emprendieran la marcha hacia Betulia, que ocuparan los desfiladeros de la montaña y atacaran a los israelitas.
2 The troops broke camp that same day. The actual fighting force numbered one hundred and twentythousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry, not to mention the baggage train with the vast number of men onfoot concerned with that.	2 Y aquel mismo día, todos sus guerreros levantaron el campamento. Su ejército se componía de ciento setenta mil soldados de infantería, y de doce mil jinetes, sin contar los encargados del equipaje, y los hombres de a pie que los acompañaban: era una inmensa multitud.
3 They penetrated the val ey in the neighbourhood of Bethulia, near the spring, and deployed on a widefront from Dothan to Balbaim and, in depth, from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.	3 Acamparon en el valle cercano a Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron a lo ancho, desde Dotaim hasta Belbaim, y a lo largo, desde Betulia hasta Ciamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.
4 When the Israelites saw this horde, they were al appal ed and said to each other, 'Now they wil lick thewhole country clean. Not even the loftiest peaks, the gorges or the hil s wil be able to stand the weight of them.'	4 Al ver aquella multitud, los israelitas quedaron despavoridos y se decían unos a otros: «Estos van a arrasar ahora toda la superficie de la tierra; ni las más altas montañas, ni los barrancos, ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».
5 Each man snatched up his arms; they lit beacons on their towers and spent the whole night on watch.	5 Entonces cada uno empuñó sus armas de guerra y montaron guardia toda aquella noche, encendiendo fogatas sobre las torres.
6 On the second day Holofernes deployed his entire cavalry in sight of the Israelites in Bethulia.	6 Al segundo día, Holofernes exhibió toda su caballería delante de los israelitas que estaban en Betulia;
7 He reconnoitred the slopes leading up to the town, located the water-points, seized them and postedpickets over them and returned to the main body.	7 luego examinó los accesos de la ciudad; inspeccionó los manantiales y se apoderó de ellos, colocando allí puestos de guardia. Después volvió a reunirse con sus tropas.
8 The chieftains of the sons of Esau, al the leaders of the Moabites and the generals of the coastal districtthen came to him and said,	8 Vinieron entonces a su encuentro los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes del pueblo de Moab y los oficiales del litoral, y le dijeron:
9 'If our master wil be pleased to listen to us, his forces wil not sustain a single wound.	9 «Si nuestro señor se digna escuchar un consejo, no habrá bajas en su ejército.
10 These Israelites do not rely so much on their spears as on the height of the mountains where they live.And admittedly it is not at all easy to scale these heights of theirs.	10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía en sus lanzas, sino en las alturas de las montañas donde habitan, porque no es fácil escalar las cimas de sus montañas.
11 'This being the case, master, avoid engaging them in a pitched battle and then you wil not lose a singleman.	11 Por eso, señor, no entres en combate con ellos y no caerá ni uno solo de tu pueblo.
12 Stay in camp, keep al your troops there too, while your servants seize the spring which rises at the footof the mountain,	12 Quédate en tu campamento y reserva a todos los hombres de tu ejército; basta con que tus servidores se apoderen de la fuente que brota al pie de la montaña,
13 since that is what provides the population of Bethulia with their water supply. Thirst wil then force themto surrender their town. Meanwhile, we and our men wil climb the nearest mountain tops and form advanceposts there to prevent anyone from leaving the town.	13 porque de ella sacan el agua todos los habitantes de Betulia; así, devorador por la sed, tendrán que entregar la ciudad. Mientras tanto, nosotros y nuestra gente escalaremos las cimas de las montañas vecinas y acamparemos allí, para impedir que alguien salga de la ciudad.
14 Hunger wil waste them, with their wives and children, and before the sword can reach them they wilalready be lying in the streets outside their houses.	14 El hambre los consumirá a ellos, a sus mujeres y a sus niños, y antes que los alcance la espada caerán tendidos en las calles de la ciudad.
15 And you will make them pay dearly for their defiance and their refusal to meet you peaceably.'	15 Así les harás pagar bien caro su rebeldía y el haberse rehusado a salir pacíficamente a tu encuentro».
16 Their words pleased Holofernes as wel as al his officers, and he decided to do as they suggested.	16 La propuesta satisfizo a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y él decidió proceder de esa manera.
17 Accordingly, a troop of Moabites moved forward with a further five thousand Assyrians. Theypenetrated the val ey and seized the Israelites' waterpoints and springs.	17 Un destacamento de amonitas partió acompañado de cinco mil asirios. Ellos acamparon en el valle, y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de los manantiales de los israelitas.
18 Meanwhile the Edomites and Ammonites went and took up positions in the highlands opposite Dothan,sending some of their men to the south-east opposite Egrebel near Chous on the Wadi Mochmur. The rest of theAssyrian army took up positions in the plain, covering every inch of the ground; their tents and equipment madean immense encampment, so vast were their numbers.	18 Entre tanto, los edomitas y los amonitas subieron para acampar en la colina situada frente a Dotaim y enviaron a algunos de ellos hacia el sur y hacia el este, frente a Egrebel, que está cerca de Cus, a orillas del torrente Mocmur. El resto del ejército asirio tomó posiciones en la llanura, cubriendo toda la superficie de la región. Sus tiendas de campaña y sus equipajes formaban un inmenso campamento, porque era una enorme multitud.
19 The Israelites cal ed on the Lord their God, dispirited because the enemy had surrounded them and cutal line of retreat.	19 Al verse rodeados por todos sus enemigos, los israelitas invocaron al Señor, su Dios, porque se sentían anonadados y sin posibilidad de romper el cerco.
20 For thirty-four days the Assyrian army, infantry, chariots, cavalrymen, had them surrounded. Everywater-jar the inhabitants of Bethulia had was empty,	20 Todo el ejército asirio –los soldados, los carros de guerra y los jinetes– mantuvieron el cerco durante treinta y cuatro días. A todos los habitantes de Betulia se les agotaron las reservas de agua
21 their storage-wel s were drying up; on no day could a man drink his fil , since their water was rationed.	21 y las cisternas comenzaron a secarse, de manera que nadie podía beber lo indispensable para cada día porque el agua se les distribuía racionada.
22 Their little children pined away, the women and young men grew weak with thirst; they col apsed in the streets and gateways of the town; they had no strength left.	22 Los niños languidecían, y las mujeres y los jóvenes desfallecían de sed y caían exhaustos en las plazas de la ciudad y en los umbrales de las puertas.
23 Young men, women, children, the whole people thronged clamouring round Uzziah and the chief menof the town, shouting in the presence of the assembled elders,	23 Todo el pueblo, los jóvenes, las mujeres y los niños se amotinaron contra Ozías y contra los jefes de la ciudad, y clamaban a gritos, diciendo a los ancianos:
24 'May God be judge between you and us! For you have done us great harm, by not suing for peace withthe Assyrians.	24 «Que Dios sea el juez entre nosotros y ustedes, por la gran injusticia que cometen contra nosotros al no entrar en negociaciones de paz con los asirios.
25 And now there is no one to help us. God has delivered us into their hands to be prostrated before themin thirst and utter helplessness.	25 Ya no hay nadie que pueda auxiliarnos, porque Dios nos ha puesto en manos de esa gente para que desfallezcamos de sed ante sus ojos y seamos totalmente destruidos.
26 Cal them in at once; hand the whole town over to be sacked by Holofernes' men and al his army.	26 Llámenlos ahora mismo y entreguen la ciudad como botín a Holofernes y a todo su ejército,
27 After al , we should be much better off as their booty than we are now; no doubt we shall be enslaved,but at least we shal be alive and not see our little ones dying before our eyes or our wives and childrenperishing.	27 porque es preferible que seamos sus prisioneros: así seremos esclavos, pero salvaremos nuestra vida y no tendremos que contemplar con nuestros propios ojos la muerte de nuestros pequeños, y no veremos a nuestras mujeres y a nuestros hijos exhalar el último suspiro.
28 By heaven and earth and by our God, the Lord of our fathers, who is punishing us for our sins and thesins of our ancestors, we implore you to take this course now, today.'	28 Los conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y también por nuestro Dios y Señor de nuestros padres, que nos castiga por nuestros pecados y por las transgresiones de nuestros antepasados; hagan hoy mismo lo que les decimos».
29 Bitter lamentations rose from the whole assembly, and they all cried loudly to the Lord God.	29 Y toda la asamblea prorrumpió en un amargo llanto, implorando a grandes voces al Señor Dios.
30 Then Uzziah spoke to them, 'Take heart, brothers! Let us hold out five days more. By then the Lord ourGod will take pity on us, for he wil not desert us altogether.	30 Pero Ozías les dijo: «Animo, hermanos, resistamos cinco días más. En el transcurso de ellos, el Señor, nuestro Dios, volverá a tener misericordia de nosotros, porque no nos abandonará hasta el fin.
31 At the end of this time, if no help is forthcoming, I shall do as you have said.'	31 Si transcurridos estos días, no nos llega ningún auxilio, entonces obraré como ustedes dicen».
32 With that he dismissed the people to their various quarters. The men went to man the wal s and towersof the town, sending the women and children home. The town was ful of despondency.	32 Luego disolvió a la multitud para que cada uno regresara a su puesto: los hombres se dirigieron a los muros y a las torres de la ciudad, pero a las mujeres y a los niños los envió a sus casas. Mientras tanto, la ciudad quedó sumida en una profunda consternación.
