1 Rehoboam then went to Shechem, al Israel having come to Shechem to proclaim him king.	1 E Roboam venne in Sichem; però che ivi era raunato tutto Israel per fare lui re.
2 (As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was stil in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt.	2 Ed essendo ancora Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat in Egitto, fuggito dal cospetto di Salomone, audita la morte sua, ritornò di Egitto.
3 They now sent for him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came.) And they spoke asfol ows to Rehoboam,	3 E mandarono e chiamaronlo; e venne Ieroboam, e tutta la moltitudine d' Israel, e dissero a Roboam:
4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.'	4 Il tuo padre impuose a noi giogo durissimo; ora iscema un poco del durissimo comandamento del tuo padre, e del gravissimo giogo che il tuo padre c'impuose, e noi ti serviremo.
5 He said to them, 'Go away for three days and then come back to me.' And the people went away.	5 Il quale respuose: andate insino al terzo dì, e tornerete a me. E andato che fu il popolo,
6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders who had been in attendance on his father Solomon while hewas alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?'	6 il re Roboam fece consiglio con gli antichi, i quali solevano stare nel cospetto di Salomone suo padre, essendo vivo, e disse loro: che consiglio mi date voi, ch' io responda al popolo?
7 They replied, 'If you become the servant of this people today, and submit to them and give them a fairreply, then they wil remain your servants for ever.'	7 I quali dissero a lui: se tu oggi obbedirai a questo popolo, e servirai, e consentirai alla petizione loro, e parlerai loro parole morbide, saranno tuoi servi d'ogni tempo.
8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance on him,who had grown up with him.	8 E lasciò il consiglio che i vecchi gli aveano dato, e chiamò a sè giovani ch' erano [stati] governati con esso lui, e istavano dinanzi a lui.
9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us!"? '	9 E disse loro: che consiglio mi date voi, ch' io risponda a questo popolo, il quale mi dice: fa che il giogo, il quale il tuo padre puose sopra di noi, sia (per te) più leggiero?
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer these people whohave been saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say tothem, "My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.	10 E dissero i giovani, ch' erano [stati] nutricati con esso lui: di' al popolo che dice: il tuo padre aggravò il giogo nostro, tu l'alleggerire; dira'gli così: il minore dito mio è più grosso che il dorso del mio padre.
11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shall make it heavier stil . My father controlled you withthe whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!" '	11 Il padre mio puose sopra voi uno giogo grave, e io arrogerò sopra il vostro giogo; il mio padre vi battette con esso i flagelli, e io vi batterò con esso lo scorpione.
12 On the third day Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstruction: 'Come back to me in three days' time.'	12 E il terzo dì venne Ieroboam e tutto il popolo a Roboam, così come il re gli avea detto: ritornate a me il terzo dì.
13 And the king gave the people a harsh answer, rejecting the advice given him by the elders	13 E il re rispose parole dure al popolo, lasciato il consiglio che gli antichi gli avevano dato.
14 and speaking to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, I shallmake it heavier stil ! My father control ed you with the whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!'	14 E disse loro secondo il consiglio de' giovani: se il padre mio vi tenne sotto grave giogo, e io augerò il vostro giogo; il padre mio vi battè colli flagelli, e io vi batterò cogli scorpioni.
15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by Yahweh to fulfil thepromise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat.	15 E non consentì il re al popol, però che Iddio l' avea avversato (dal popolo) acciò ch' egli facesse la sua parola, la quale avea detto per mano di Aia di Silo a Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat.
16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -No heritage in the son of Jesse! Away to your tents, Israel! Now look after your ownHouse, David! So Israel went home again.	16 E veggendo il popolo, che il re non gli avea voluto udire, respose a lui dicendo: che parte abbiamo noi in David? e che eredità nel figliuolo d' Isai? Vattene, Israel, alla casa tua; ora vedi la casa tua, David. E andò Israel nelle case sue.
17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.	17 E Roboam regnò sopra tutti questi della casa d' Israel, i quali abitavano nelle città di Giuda.
18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of forced labour, all Israel stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.	18 E Roboam mandò Aduram, il quale era sopra i tributi; e tutto Israel il lapidò, e morio. E Roboam di fretta montò nel carro, e fuggio in Ierusalem.
19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this.	19 E Israel si partio della casa di David, insino al presente dì.
20 When al Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and madehim king of al Israel; no one remained loyal to the House of David, except the tribe of Judah.	20 E udito tutto Israel, che Ieroboam era ritornato, intervenne che mandarono per lui, e raunata alquanta moltitudine (li quali) il fecero re sopra Israel; e non fu persona che seguitasse la casa di David, se non la tribù di Giuda.
21 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem he mustered the whole House of Judah and the tribe ofBenjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors, to fight the House of Israel and win back the kingdomfor Rehoboam son of Solomon.	21 E Roboam venne in Ierusalem, e congregò tutta la casa di Giuda, e tutta la tribù di Beniamin, CLXXX milia di uomini eletti, per combattere contro alla casa d'Israel, e per ridurre il regno a Roboam figliuolo di Salomone.
22 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,	22 E la parola di Dio fu fatta a Semeia, uomo di Dio; e disse:
23 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to the whole House of Judah, to Benjamin andto the rest of the people,	23 Favella a Roboam figliuolo di Salomone re di Giuda, e a tutta la casa di Giuda e di Beniamin, e a tutti gli altri del popolo, e dirai:
24 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers, the Israelites; let everyone go home,for this is my doing." ' They obeyed the command of Yahweh and turned back in accordance with his word.	24 Questo dice il Signore: non anderete, e non combatterete contro a' vostri fratelli figliuoli d' Israel; e ogni uomo ritorni in casa sua, però che questo è fatto da me. E udirono la parola di Dio, e ritornarono di quello cammino, sì come il Signore avea comandato.
25 Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the mountain country of Ephraim and made that his residence. Then,leaving there, he fortified Penuel.	25 E Ieroboam edificò Sichem nel monte d' Efraim, e abitò ivi; e uscito indi edificò Fanuel.
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, 'As things are, the kingdom wil revert to the House of David.	26 E disse Ieroboam nel suo cuore: ora ritornerà il regno alla casa di David,
27 If this people continues to go up to the Temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, thepeople's heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they wil put me to death.'	27 se questo popolo ascenderà a fare sacrificii alla casa di Dio in Ierusalem; e convertirassi il cuore di questo popolo al suo signore Roboam re di Giuda, e ritornando a lui, uccideranno me.
28 So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, 'You havebeen going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here is your God, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt!'	28 E per pensato consiglio fece due vitelli d'oro, e disse al popolo: da ora innanzi non ascendiate in Ierusalem, però che questi sono gli dii tuoi, che trassero te, Israel, della terra d'Egitto.
29 He set one up at Bethel,	29 E l'uno puose in Betel, e l'altro in Dan.
30 and the people went in procession in front of the other one al the way to Dan. In Israel this gave riseto sin, for the people went to Bethel to worship the one, and all the way to Dan to worship the other.	30 E questo fu fatto in peccato; e andava il popolo ad adorare il vitello in Dan.
31 He set up shrines on the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not oflevitical descent.	31 E fece il tempio nel luogo alto; e degl' infimi del popolo ordinò sacerdoti, i quali non erano de' figliuoli di Levi.
32 Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast keptin Judah, when he offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did at Bethel, offering sacrifices to the calves which hehad made and, at Bethel, instal ing the priests of the high places which he had set up.	32 E ordinò il dì solenne nell' ottavo mese, nel quinto decimo dì del mese, in similitudine della solennitade che si fa in Giuda. E ascendendo nello altare, simigliantemente fece in Betel, acciò che sacrificasse ai vitelli ch' egli avea fatti; e ordinò in Betel sacerdoti di eccelsi, ch' egli avea fatto.
33 On the fifteenth of the eighth month, the month which he had chosen deliberately, he offeredsacrifices on the altar which he had made at Bethel; he instituted a feast for the Israelites and himself went up tothe altar to burn the sacrifice.	33 E ascese sopra lo altare il quale avea fatto in Betel, il quintodecimo di del mese [ottavo], il quale avea ordinato di suo cuore; e fece festa ai figliuoli d' Israel, e montò sopra l'altare per offerire l' incenso.
