NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an advocate, a certain Tertullus, and they presented formal charges against Paul to the governor.	1 Cinq jours plus tard, le grand prêtre Ananie descendit avec quelques anciens et un avocat, un certainTertullus, et, devant le gouverneur, ils se constituèrent accusateurs de Paul.
2 When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, "Since we have attained much peace through you, and reforms have been accomplished in this nation through your provident care,	2 Celui-ci fut appelé, et Tertullus entama l'accusation en ces termes: "La paix profonde dont nousjouissons grâce à toi et les réformes dont cette nation est redevable à ta providence,
3 we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all gratitude.	3 en tout et partout nous les accueillons, très excellent Félix, avec toutes sortes d'actions de grâces.
4 But in order not to detain you further, I ask you to give us a brief hearing with your customary graciousness.	4 Mais pour ne pas t'importuner davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un instant avec la bienveillancequi te caractérise.
5 We found this man to be a pest; he creates dissension among Jews all over the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazoreans.	5 Cet homme, nous l'avons constaté, est une peste: il suscite des désordres chez tous les Juifs dumonde entier, et c'est un meneur du parti des Nazôréens.
6 He even tried to desecrate our temple, but we arrested him.	6 Il a même tenté de profaner le Temple, et nous l'avons alors arrêté.

8 If you examine him you will be able to learn from him for yourself about everything of which we are accusing him."	8 C'est par lui que tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, t'assurer du bien-fondé de toutes nosaccusations contre lui."
9 The Jews also joined in the attack and asserted that these things were so.	9 Les Juifs l'appuyèrent, assurant qu'il en était bien ainsi.
10 Then the governor motioned to him to speak and Paul replied, "I know that you have been a judge over this nation for many years and so I am pleased to make my defense before you.	10 Alors, le gouverneur lui ayant fait signe de parler, Paul répondit: "Voilà, je le sais, de nombreusesannées que tu as cette nation sous ta juridiction; aussi est-ce avec confiance que je plaiderai ma cause.
11 As you can verify, not more than twelve days have passed since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.	11 Tu peux t'en assurer: il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté en pèlerinage à Jérusalem,
12 Neither in the temple, nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city did they find me arguing with anyone or instigating a riot among the people.	12 et, ni dans le Temple, ni dans les synagogues, ni par la ville, on ne m'a trouvé en discussion avecquelqu'un ou en train d'ameuter la foule.
13 Nor can they prove to you the accusations they are now making against me.	13 Ils ne peuvent pas davantage te prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.
14 But this I do admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors and I believe everything that is in accordance with the law and written in the prophets.	14 "Je t'avoue pourtant ceci: c'est suivant la Voie, qualifiée par eux de parti, que je sers le Dieu de mespères, gardant ma foi à tout ce qu'il y a dans la Loi et à ce qui est écrit dans les Prophètes,
15 I have the same hope in God as they themselves have that there will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous.	15 ayant en Dieu l'espérance, comme ceux-ci l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justeset des pécheurs.
16 Because of this, I always strive to keep my conscience clear before God and man.	16 C'est pourquoi, moi aussi, je m'applique à avoir sans cesse une conscience irréprochable devantDieu et devant les hommes.
17 After many years, I came to bring alms for my nation and offerings.	17 "Au bout de bien des années, je suis venu apporter des aumônes à ma nation et présenter desoffrandes:
18 While I was so engaged, they found me, after my purification, in the temple without a crowd or disturbance.	18 c'est ainsi qu'ils m'ont trouvé dans le Temple; je m'étais purifié et ne provoquais ni attroupement nitumulte.
19 But some Jews from the province of Asia, who should be here before you to make whatever accusation they might have against me--	19 Mais quelques Juifs d'Asie... c'est eux qui auraient dû se présenter devant toi et m'accuser, s'ilsavaient quelque chose contre moi!
20 or let these men themselves state what crime they discovered when I stood before the Sanhedrin,	20 Que ceux-ci du moins disent, eux, de quel délit ils m'ont trouvé coupable lorsque j'ai comparudevant le Sanhédrin!
21 unless it was my one outcry as I stood among them, that 'I am on trial before you today for the resurrection of the dead.'"	21 A moins qu'il ne s'agisse de cette seule parole que j'ai criée, debout au milieu d'eux: C'est à cause dela résurrection des morts que je suis mis aujourd'hui en jugement devant vous."
22 Then Felix, who was accurately informed about the Way, postponed the trial, saying, "When Lysias the commander comes down, I shall decide your case."	22 Félix, qui était fort exactement informé de ce qui concerne la Voie, les ajourna en disant: "Dès quele tribun Lysias sera descendu, je statuerai sur votre affaire."
23 He gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that he should not prevent any of his friends from caring for his needs.	23 Il prescrivit au centurion de garder Paul prisonnier, mais de lui laisser quelques facilités et den'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre service.
24 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.	24 Quelques jours plus tard, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille, qui était juive. Il envoya chercher Paulet l'écouta parler de la foi au Christ Jésus.
25 But as he spoke about righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, "You may go for now; when I find an opportunity I shall summon you again."	25 Mais comme il se mettait à discourir sur la justice, la continence, le jugement à venir, Félix pritpeur et répondit: "Pour le moment, tu peux aller. Je te rappellerai à la première occasion."
26 At the same time he hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent for him very often and conversed with him.	26 Il espérait par ailleurs que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent; aussi l'envoyait-il assez souvent chercherpour converser avec lui.
27 Two years passed and Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. Wishing to ingratiate himself with the Jews, Felix left Paul in prison.	27 Après deux années révolues, Félix reçut pour successeur Porcius Festus. Voulant faire plaisir auxJuifs, Félix laissa Paul en captivité.
