Sirach 40

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,	1 Una penosa tarea ha sido impuesta a todo hombre y un yugo pesado agobia a los hijos de Adán, desde el día que salen del vientre materno, hasta el día que retornan a la madre común.
2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--	2 Les da mucho que pensar y los llena de temor la ansiosa expectativa del día de la muerte.
3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,	3 Desde el que está sentado en un trono glorioso hasta el humillado en el polvo y la ceniza;
4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--	4 desde el que lleva púrpura y corona hasta el que va vestido miserablemente, sólo sienten rabia y envidia, turbación e inquietud, miedo a la muerte, resentimiento y rivalidad;
5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.	5 y a la hora en que cada uno descansa en su lecho, el sueño de la noche perturba sus pensamientos.
6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;	6 Descansa un poco, casi nada, y empieza a debatirse como en pleno día, agitado por sus propias pesadillas, como quien huye de un campo de batalla.
7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.	7 En el momento de sentirse a salvo, se despierta y ve con sorpresa que su temor era infundado.
8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.	8 Esto le toca a todo ser viviente, sea hombre o animal, pero a los pecadores, siete veces más:
9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:	9 muerte, sangre, rivalidad y espada, adversidad, hambre, destrucción y flagelo.
10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.	10 Todo esto fue creado para los impíos, y a causa de ellos sobrevino el diluvio.
11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.	11 Todo lo que sale de la tierra, retorna a la tierra, y lo que sale de las aguas, vuelve al mar.
12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.	12 El soborno y la injusticia desaparecerán, pero la fidelidad permanece para siempre.
13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,	13 La riqueza de los injustos se secará como un torrente, es como el fragor de un trueno que estalla en la tormenta.
14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.	14 Cuando uno de ellos se apodera de algo, se alegra, pero los transgresores desaparecerán por completo.
15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;	15 Los retoños de los impíos no multiplican sus ramas, y las raíces impuras están sobre una roca escarpada.
16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;	16 Caña que brota en cualquier agua y al borde de un río será arrancada antes que toda otra hierba.
17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.	17 La generosidad es como un vergel exuberante y la limosna permanece para siempre.
18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.	18 Dulce es la vida del que se basta a sí mismo y del que trabaja, pero más todavía la del que encuentra un tesoro.
19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;	19 Tener hijos y fundar una ciudad perpetúan el nombre, pero más se estima a una mujer irreprochable.
20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.	20 El vino y la música alegran el corazón, pero más todavía el amor a la sabiduría.
21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.	21 La flauta y el arpa emiten sonidos melodiosos, pero más todavía una lengua dulce.
22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.	22 La gracia y la belleza atraen la mirada, pero más todavía el verdor de los campos.
23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.	23 El amigo y el compañero se ayudan oportunamente, pero más todavía la mujer y el marido.
24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.	24 Los hermanos y los bienhechores son útiles en la adversidad, pero más todavía salva la limosna.
25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.	25 El oro y la plata hacen marchar con paso firme, pero más todavía se aprecia un consejo.
26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:	26 La riqueza y la fuerza reconfortan el corazón, pero más todavía el temor del Señor. Con el temor del Señor, nada falta, y ya no es necesario buscar otra ayuda.
27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.	27 El temor del Señor es como un vergel exuberante, y protege más que cualquier gloria.
28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;	28 Hijo mío, no vivas de la mendicidad, porque más vale morir que mendigar.
29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:	29 No merece llamarse vida la del que está pendiente de la mesa de otro. El mancha su boca con comida ajena, y el hombre instruido y bien educado se cuida de hacerlo.
30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.	30 En boca del desvergonzado la mendicidad es dulce, pero en sus entrañas será fuego ardiente.
