1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.	1 І побачивши, що час був сприятливий, Йонатан вибрав мужів і послав їх у Рим, щоб затвердити й відновити з римлянами дружбу.
2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.	2 Так само й до спартанців і в інші місця вислав листи в тій же справі.
3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."	3 Пустились ті в дорогу до Риму і, виступивши перед Радою, сказали: «Йонатан первосвященик та юдейський народ прислали нас, щоб відновити дружбу й союз із вами, як то було перше.»
4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.	4 І римляни дали їм листа до влади в кожній країні, щоб ті провели їх мирно в Юдею.
5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Ось відпис листів, що Йонатан був написав до спартанців:
6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.	6 «Йонатан первосвященик, народна Рада, священики й увесь юдейський народ братам спартанцям, привіт!
7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.	7 Уже в минулому Онія, первосвященик, одержав був листи від Арія, що царював над вами, в яких писалося, що ви брати наші, як про це свідчить залучений тут відпис.
8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.	8 Онія прийняв вашого посла з пошаною й узяв від нього листа, в якому говорилося про союз і дружбу.
9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,	9 Хоч ми його й не потребуємо, бо маємо втіху — святі книги, що в руках наших, —
10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.	10 нам усе ж таки приємно спробувати відновити братерство й дружбу з вами, щоб не зробитись вам чужими, багато бо часу упливло, відколи ви до нас писали.
11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.	11 Ми ввесь час вас згадуємо, безнастанно, чи то на свята, чи при будь-яких інших святкових нагодах, коли приносимо жертви, чи у молитвах наших, як воно личить і годиться про братів пам’ятати.
12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.	12 Ми раді вашій славі.
13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.	13 На нас же налягло з усіх сторін багато злиднів і воєн багато; усі бо навколишні царі на нас воювали.
14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;	14 Ми не хотіли під час тих воєн ні вам, ні іншим нашим союзникам та друзям надокучати,
15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.	15 бо маємо з неба допомогу й були врятовані від наших ворогів, які були принижені.
16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.	16 Тому ми й вибрали Нуменія, сина Антіоха, й Антипатра, сина Ясона, і вислали їх до римлян, щоб відновити з ними дружбу й союз, який мали ми з ними перше.
17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.	17 Ми звеліли й до вас завернути, привітати вас і доручити вам нашого листа про віднову нашого братерства.
18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."	18 Ви, отже, зробите гаразд, коли дасте нам відповідь у цій справі.»
19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:	19 А ось відпис листа, що спартанці вислали Онії:
20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.	20 «Арій, цар спартанський, Онії, великому первосвященикові, привіт!
21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.	21 В якімсь письмі про спартанців та про юдеїв знайшлося, що вони брати та з роду Авраама.
22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.	22 І от тепер, тому що ми це знаємо, ви добре зробите, якщо нам напишете, як вам ідеться;
23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."	23 а щодо нас, то ми вам відписуємо: Худоба ваша й ваше майно — наші, так само як усе наше — ваше. Даємо, отже, наказ, щоб вас про те повідомили.»
24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.	24 Довідався Йонатан, що начальники Димитрія повернулися з більшим військом, ніж перше, щоб воювати проти нього,
25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.	25 і виступив з Єрусалиму й пішов проти них в Амафітін-край, не дав бо їм часу вступити у край свій.
26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.	26 Він вислав розвідувачів у їхній табір, які, повернувшись, оповіли йому, що сирійці готові напасти вночі на юдеїв.
27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.	27 Тому, коли зайшло сонце, Йонатан звелів своїм бути напоготові й зі зброєю в руках усю ніч сподіватися бою, і розставив передові чати навколо табору.
28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.	28 Почули вороги, що Йонатан із своїми приготувався до бою, і зо страху впали серцем і запалили вогонь у таборі в себе й відступили.
29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.	29 Та Йонатан зо своїми не знали того аж до ранку, бо бачили, що горів огонь.
30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.	30 Аж потім кинувся Йонатан навздогінці за ними, та не встиг, бо ті перейшли вже Елевтер-річку.
31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.	31 Тоді Йонатан повернувсь проти арабів, що звуться завадеї, розбив їх, узяв з них здобич
32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.	32 і, знявши табір, пішов у Дамаск, пройшовши через цілу країну.
33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,	33 Симон теж вирушив у похід і пройшов аж до Аскалону й до сусідніх твердинь, потім звернув на Яффу й заволодів нею,
34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.	34 бо почув, що мешканці хотіли були видати ту кріпость прибічникам Димитрія, тим і поставив там залогу для її охорони.
35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,	35 Повернувшись назад, Йонатан скликав на збори старших народних і ухвалив з ними збудувати кріпості в Юдеї,
36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.	36 підвищити мури єрусалимські й вивести високий мур між кріпостю та містом, щоб її від міста відділити, щоб стояла окремо, отже, щоб залога не могла нічого ні купити, ні продати.
37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.	37 От і зібралися, щоб місто будувати, — аж ось частина муру коло рову, що була на сході, завалилась. Йонатан відновив дільницю, що зветься Хафената.
38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.	38 А Симон збудував Адіду на поділлю й укріпив її, додавши їй ворота з засувами.
39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.	39 Тим часом Трифон намагався стати царем над Азією, покласти вінець собі на голову і простягнути руку на царя Антіоха,
40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.	40 але боявся, що Йонатан йому цього не дозволить, буде воювати проти нього. Тому й шукав, як би то його схопити та вбити. Він рушив у дорогу і прибув у Бетшан.
41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.	41 Йонатан із 40 000 добірних до бою мужів вийшов йому назустріч і теж прибув у Бетшан.
42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.	42 Побачив Трифон, що той прибув з великим військом, і побоявся на нього простягнути руку,
43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.	43 тому й прийняв його з честю, появив його всім своїм друзям, дав йому гостинців і наказав своїм друзям та військам слухатись його, немов себе самого,
44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?	44 та й сказав до Йонатана: «Навіщо ти томив народ цей? Таж війни нема між нами!
45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."	45 попусти їх додому, а для себе вибери кілька чоловік, щоб були при тобі, і йди зо мною у Птолемаїду. Я дам тобі її разом з іншими твердинями й рештою військ та всіма старшинами, а сам повернусь назад, бож тільки для того я й прибув сюди.»
46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.	46 Повірив йому Йонатан і зробив так, як той сказав був: відпустив війська, що пішли собі в Юдею.
47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.	47 При собі лишив він 3000 чоловік, з яких 2000 залишив у Галилеї, а 1000 ходила з ним.
48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.	48 Скоро Йонатан увійшов у Птолемаїду, птолемаїдяни замкнули за ним браму, схопили його і вбили мечем тих, що ввійшли з ним.
49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.	49 Тоді Трифон послав війська й кінноту в Галилею та на велику рівнину, щоб вигубити всіх, що були з Йонатаном.
50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.	50 Та ці, довідавшися, що його взято й убито разом з тими, які були при ньому, один одного підбадьорили та й густими лавами двигнулися, готові до бою.
51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 Як же побачили ті, які за ними гналися, що юдеям ідеться про життя, то відступили.
52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.	52 І тим робом прибули всі в мирі в Юдею й, сповнені страху, оплакували Йонатана й тих, що були при ньому; увесь Ізраїль плакав вельми.
53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."	53 Усі народи навколо намагалися їх стерти з лиця землі; вони казали: «Нема в них ні начальника, ні помічника; ходім лишень на них війною й зітрімо з-поміж людей пам’ять про них.»
