1 During the reign of Ahasuerus-this was the Ahasuerus who ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia-	1 Si era al tempo d'Assuero, il quale regnò dall'india all'Etiopia, sopra cento ventisette provincie.
2 while he was occupying the royal throne in the stronghold of Susa,	2 Quando egli s'assise sul trono del suo regno, la sua capitale era Susa.
3 in the third year of his reign, he presided over a feast for all his officers and ministers: the Persian and Median aristocracy, the nobles, and the governors of the provinces.	3 Or nel terzo anno del suo impero egli fece fare alla sua presenza un gran convito a tutti i principi, ai suoi servi, ai più valorosi Persiani, ai principali tra i Medi e ai prefetti delle provincie,

6 There were white cotton draperies and violet hangings, held by cords of crimson byssus from silver rings on marble pillars. Gold and silver couches were on the pavement, which was of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and colored stones.	6 Da ogni parte pendevano tende di color celeste, bianco e di giacinto, sostenute da cordoni di bisso e di porpora, che passavano dentro anelli di avorio attaccati a colonne di marmo. V'erano inoltre dei letti d'oro e d'argento, disposti sopra un pavimento di smeraldi e di marmo pario, decorato da pitture di mirabile varietà.
7 Liquor was served in a variety of golden cups, and the royal wine flowed freely, as befitted the king's munificence.	7 E convitati bevevano in tazze d'oro, e le vivande eran portate in piatti sempre differenti. Il vino poi, come si conveniva a reale magnificenza, era mesciuto in abbondanza e squisito.
8 By ordinance of the king the drinking was unstinted, for he had instructed all the stewards of his household to comply with the good pleasure of everyone.	8 Non v'era chi forzasse a bere chi non voleva, ma ognuno ne prendeva a suo piacimento, essendo questo l'ordine del re, il quale aveva affidata ciascuna tavola ad uno dei suoi grandi.
9 Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women inside the royal palace of King Ahasuerus.	9 Anche la regina Vasti fece un convito alle donne nel palazzo dove il re Assuero soleva dimorare.
10 On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he instructed Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who attended King Ahasuerus,	10 Il settimo giorno, essendo il re più allegro del solito e ben riscaldato dal vino per l'eccessivo bere, ordinò ai sette eunuchi Maumam, Bazata, Arbona, Bagata, Abgata, Zetar Carcas, i quali servivano davanti a lui,
11 to bring Queen Vashti into his presence wearing the royal crown, that he might display her beauty to the populace and the officials, for she was lovely to behold.	11 di far venire davanti al re la regina Vasti, col diadema in capo, per far vedere a tutto il popolo e ai grandi della corte la sua bellezza; che era bellissima.
12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the royal order issued through the eunuchs. At this the king's wrath flared up, and he burned with fury.	12 Ma essa rifiutò e non volle muoversi al comando del re, intimatole dagli eunuchi. Allora il re, divenutone irritato e acceso di terribile furore,
13 He conferred with the wise men versed in the law, because the king's business was conducted in general consultation with lawyers and jurists.	13 interrogò i sapienti, che, secondo l'uso del re, stavan sempre davanti a lui, col consiglio dei quali faceva ogni cosa, conoscendo essi le leggi e i costumi dei maggiori
14 He summoned Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven Persian and Median officials who were in the king's personal service and held first rank in the realm,	14 (i primi e i più vicini erano Carsena, Setar, Admata, Darsis, Mares, Marsana, Mamucan, i sette capi dei Persiani e dei Medi, i quali vedevano la faccia del re, e solevano sedersi primi dopo di lui),
15 and asked them, "What is to be done by law with Queen Vashti for disobeying the order of King Ahasuerus issued through the eunuchs?"	15 a qual pena dovesse essere sottoposta la regina Vasti, che non aveva voluto eseguire il comando intimatole dal re Assuero per mezzo degli eunuchi.
16 In the presence of the king and of the officials, Memucan answered: "Queen Vashti has not wronged the king alone, but all the officials and the populace throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus.	16 Mamucan rispose alla presenza del re e dei principi: « La regina Vasti ha offeso non soltanto il re, ma anche tutti i popoli e i principi che sono in tutte le provincie del re Assuero.
17 For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and they will look with disdain upon their husbands when it is reported, "King Ahasuerus commanded that Queen Vashti be ushered into his presence, but she would not come.'	17 Infatti l'operato della regina verrà a conoscenza di tutte le donne e farà loro disprezzare i loro mariti col dire: Il re Assuero ha comandato alla regina Vasti di presentarsi a lui, ed essa non è andata.
18 This very day the Persian and Median ladies who hear of the queen's conduct will rebel against all the royal officials, with corresponding disdain and rancor.	18 E, su tale esempio, tutte le mogli dei principi dei Persiani e dei Medi faran poco conto degli ordini dei mariti; è quindi giusto lo sdegno del re.
19 If it please the king, let an irrevocable royal decree be issued by him and inscribed among the laws of the Persians and Medes, forbidding Vashti to come into the presence of King Ahasuerus and authorizing the king to give her royal dignity to one more worthy than she.	19 Se così ti piace, sia emanato da parte tua un editto, scritto secondo la legge dei Persiani e dei Medi (la quale non può essere violata) che la regina Vasti non comparisca più dinanzi al re, e la sua dignità di regina l'abbia un'altra migliore di lei.
20 Thus, when the decree which the king will issue is published throughout his realm, vast as it is, all wives will honor their husbands, from the greatest to the least."	20 Ciò si notifichi in tutte le provincie del tuo impero (che è vastissimo), e così tutte le le mogli, e dei grandi e dei piccoli, onoreranno i loro mariti ».
21 This proposal found acceptance with the king and the officials, and the king acted on the advice of Memucan.	21 Essendo questo consiglio piaciuto al re e ai principi, il re fece secondo l'avviso di Mamucan,
22 He sent letters to all the royal provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, to the effect that every man should be lord in his own home.	22 e scrisse lettere a tutte le provincie del suo impero, in diverse lingue e caratteri, affinchè ogni nazione potesse intendere e leggere che i mariti sono i capi e i padroni nelle loro case, e ciò si facesse conoscere a tutti i popoli.
